“Ain’t nothing to apologize for,” Dodger murmured quiet like, something near anger curling in the back of his voice, though not directed at the lass.

‘Cause that seemed to be the way it always worked, huh. Folks might claim to carry ‘bout the children, to love their kids so much, but somehow the little ones always got caught in the crossfire. When grown-ups couldn’t deal with their troubles themselves, or was too fool enough, it was always the kids that bore the brunt of it.

Dodger’s lips rolled together for a moment before he released a breath of his own. “Take your time. I ain’t pushing you.”

❝ no, no. i’m fine, thank you. ❞

june wiped her eyes with the back of her hand and took another deep breath. she was fine, she really was- she was safe. nothing was threatening her town anymore and there were no more cups to possess her. even if she was a bit rocky emotionally, she was... okay.

she smiled hesitantly at the stranger.

❝ my name’s june. what’s yours? ‘nd what brings you here t’refuge? ❞

barclay wasn’t the only cook at amnesty lodge, june was one as well. given, she learned everything she knew from him, seeing as she sort of stuck to his side when she first joined the lodge- him and dani, that was. ( they seemed the friendliest out of all of them, really. )

that afternoon she was making cookies, mostly for herself due to a sort of craving for them she woke up with that morning, but she made sure to make extra batches for anyone else in the lodge who wanted some.

june noticed aubrey come down and head into the kitchen and she beamed, looking up from the mixing bowl to greet her.

   ‘  ah  …  right!  forgot  you  didn’t  practice  that,  just  jumping  the  bolt,  i  suppose,  ’  angus  knew  far  too  many  magic  -  users  and  was  rather  used  to  everyone  knowing  some  magic  but  …  he  shouldn’t  be  assuming  that  so  often.

   ‘  though  magniv!  ren  is  such  a  good  cook,  better  than  taako  i’d  say,  ’  voice  bent  in  a  way  that  sounded  like  a  vocal  nudge  and  wink.  angus’  own  mentor  wouldn’t  like  his  comments  but  …  he  wasn’t  here  to  comment,  and  angus  did  enjoy  both  elves’  cooking.  ‘  i’ve  –  i’ve  never  been  able  to  make  spaghetti,  at  least  not  from  scratch,  do  you  do  that?  ’

june made a mental note to tell ren about angus’s comment, knowing she would love to hear that since taako was her idol. though, maybe not because if she were to say something to taako... well, that wouldn’t be very pretty. maybe mention it as an anonymous comment.

she seemed a bit shocked, though, by angus’s other comment of the fact he had never been able to make spaghetti from scratch. it took her a minute to realize that most people probably didn’t. she didn’t very often, but every so often her and ren would made their own noodles for some recipes, making cute shapes ( mostly bowties. )

❝ sure do, angus. it’s pretty nice ta make it from scratch. i’ll be sure to call ya over the stone next time ren and i go t’make some. you’ve got to try it. ❞

It’d taken a lot of hard work and practise to be able to pull off even the most basic of tricks. Aubrey Little wasn’t a vein person by nature, but even she knew that was nothing to be sniffed at. “The Lady Flame,” she said, adding a dramatic flourish for good luck. “I was doing a show in the next town over when Mama found me, turns out my magic’s uh, a little more real than I always thought it was.” 

❝ a magician? ❞ june smiled at the thought of it- a magician who didn’t know that she could do actual magic. with how sure of herself aubrey seemed to be, she bet that she was a great magician. ( and ‘ the lady flame ’ was a cool stage name, too. it was certainly something she would’ve asked her dad to take her to when she was younger. )

june gasped in a breath as soon as someone told her to breathe- it was shuddery and somewhat shallow, but it was a breath. panic had seized her quickly at a memory-- maybe a flashback, she wasn’t sure-- to something during the loops, the hour, the panic of her town being in trouble sending her a bit over the edge of crying.

it was embarrassing, really, for someone that wasn’t ren to see her in such a state.

( though, now, there were alternative sources of fire. )
