“Is there really no one here?”
“Exactly, my lovely Vil. We’re alone. Just the two of us.”
Rook was so satisfied after organizing his surprise. Vil could tell by simply observing his proud smile, and noticing how everything, in Rook’s body language, suggested that was really amused by how his planned surprise turned out.
At first, Vil believed his hunter was clearly playing with him.
Not that Rook wasn’t capable of something like booking an entire art gallery for the two of them only. Vil was aware of the fact Rook disposed of the economic measures to do it, and his family had connections as well. Plus, Rook possessed the will to execute that perfect, romantic plan for him. He was truly unstoppable for that matter.
It happened during winter, when Vil told Rook how much he desired to visit the art show that was taking place in a few months from there. It was a show where art pieces from all over the world would be displayed at the museum; a truly wonderful occasion for the Shaftlands to build relationships with all the nations that decided to lend their most precious artifacts in order to come together to simply celebrate the magnificence of art.
After telling that to Rook, Vil remembered he had sighed, a bit unhappy. He knew many brands would have tried to invite him over as a sponsor, and sure Vil had the time and measures necessary to go visit on his own. No, it didn’t sigh because occasions were missing. It was actually…Vil wasn’t eager to go with a camera flashing at him at every step. It would’ve ruined the whole experience and left him flustered and stressed. Even if he was not officially working, the media still demanded his attention, and Vil would’ve been left relying on magical camouflage. As always. However, there was no guarantee it would be enough, in order to run from those obsessive flashes and mics. Also, Vil didn’t want to hide. And it was that simple admission that caught Rook’s entire attention. Vil remembered Rook glazed over him with a strange light in his emerald eyes.
Vil had thought about every possibility but that. Yet, he was happy, and grateful for that opportunity, overjoyed at being able to visit the art gallery with his beloved hunter without any distraction, or anyone bothering him with interviews, photos or anything that would’ve ruined his experience.
“It’s not hard imagining you plotting all of this," Vil remarked. And in doing that, he clinged to Rook’s arms, while his hunter was in charge of showing him around in those halls full of lights and incredible masterpieces, where only their steps were audible.
“Still, I’m…surprised.”
Rook heard Vil’s confessions and giggled, and the sound of his soft laugh wandered through the halls full of the most enchanting paintings and statues. Everywhere he looked, Vil became a witness of all these wonders. And it was hard, turning away. If only Rook wasn’t there by his side.
From time to time, Vil stole a glance. He was sure Rook was always with him, never leaving his side. He could hear Rook’s camera taking some photos, stealing some pictures while Vil was focused on the paintings, and the statues, to look at the arts closer. Yet, those sounds were calming. They didn’t make Vil nervous, as the man behind the camera took pictures of him that were sincere, filtered by the love of which his shining green eyes were full. Vil didn’t need to check if everything was in order, as the man behind the camera made him feel safe, and happy.
“I would do anything for you, my Vil.”
Vil clinged to Rook’s arm more, while the other kept guiding him through the halls as if he had studied the itinerary for that day solely.
They talk a lot, discussing the art pieces they were looking at, and, from time to time, while Vil was busy admiring the ceiling adorned with the most colorful mosaics, he could feel Rook leaning in to kiss him on his temple. Vil was so thankful for his self-control. Every time Rook leant in for a kiss, Vil was sure his legs were so jelly he was about to fall. Ah, how wonderful it was, being able to savor each of Rook’s special attention for him without being too worried about cameras on him at every corner, waiting for him to fall for real! And how reassuring it was to know that, if Vil would really fall, Rook was there to help him, offering to carry him in his strong arms.
…well, that wasn’t a horrible idea, that one.
“The art show is not near to its end” Rook told him at some point. They were now standing in a little hallway, which led to the second part of the gallery dedicated to the exposition of precious artifacts like jars and jewels. Vil had read that on the website Rook linked to him via messages.
Vil grabbed his phone. It was midday. Windows filtered the warm sun rays, and those gentle caresses from the sun soon became plays of many colors when they shattered on the ancient mirrors, or jewels that adorned the halls. Even though they were in the middle of summer, the gallery was cool enough to not suffer the season’s extreme heat. It was enjoyable, walking through the empty walls, holding close to Rook’s arm without mutating into a puddle of sweat. It was truly a perfect day, and Vil almost wondered if Rook hadn’t programmed that, too, with a kind of spell capable of controlling the weather.
Vil lips curved into the softest smile. Probably, Rook had really moved mountains just to gift him the most wonderful day ever.
“What do you think about stopping by and eating something? There are no visitors, sure, but the bar's staff is there for us only.”
Vil raised his eyebrows. Still, he was amused. Everything about that day was a continuous surprise, starting from the care Rook put in all the little details in order for Vil to be cherished and loved. As if Vil needed anything else than Rook to feel cherished and loved.
“Have you really called them just for us two?” Vil asked, unable to hide his amusement. Rook held the door for him to walk in, and gave him a nod to let Vil go first.
“They were overjoyed at the thought of cooking for the famous Vil Schoenheit” Rook explained, prouder than before for his plan.
A waiter welcomed them, and led the couple to a table at the centre of the little bar. They both sat down, and while Vil looked for a split second at his phone in order to catch some important message, Rook put away his camera, leaving it on the floor near his foot. Then, the waiter came back with the menus, and Vil realized only after the first reading that something new was happening.
“Personalized menus?” Vil was taken aback. Rook smiled, and that malicious light in his eyes told Vil what he needed to know. That was one of Rook’s ideas, too.
“Rook-“
“I believe the staff did the research” Rook then suggested, pretending to be busy studying a menu he personally wrote from top to bottom.
“Or, perhaps” Vil remarked, posing the menu down on the table “A lousy crow whispered in their ears everything about my likings.”
Vil couldn’t stop smiling. What he had asked for was a day in the gallery, far from paparazzis and his beloved fans. He loved every one of them, yet Vil couldn’t simply ignore his needs of…being himself, in Rook’s company, and nothing else. His hand moved on the soft couch before Vil was able to process the movements, looking for Rook’s. And Rook held him closer, softly, their fingers intertwining. Vil’s hand was so small in comparison to Rook’s. And his hunter’s palm was warm, but not in an insufferable way. It was warm as the sun was warm during a summer evening: gentle, still shining bright but not violently.
The waiter came back some minutes later to take their orders. Vil chose a forest fruit smoothie, made with coconut milk and with ice in it, while Rook opted for some toasted bread to share it with Vil, and a fresh apple cider to cool down before keeping up with their visit.
The staff took even less minutes to prepare their orders. The waiter reappeared after the span of probably ten minutes, and during those minutes, Vil rested his head on Rook’s shoulder just to enjoy the quietness, the peace of hearing Rook’s singing softly and caressing his hand with the thumb. Vil was sure he had almost fallen asleep, as the sun coming through the large window was so nice he made him feel drowsy, cuddled by Rook’s warmth.
The waiter left everything on the table and came back to the kitchen.
Vil sat straight again, and went immediately to sip his smoothie. He had just tasted it when his eyes lit up.
“So?” Rook was observing him with some bread in his hand. He was waiting for Vil to say something, for a kind of reaction, and Vil found himself unable to process a coherent thought. He kept tasting the smoothie, pleased at its freshness and sweetness, pleased by that particular mix that sounded…way too familiar.
“Have you given the staff my smoothie recipe?”
Vil couldn’t believe it. Was there something Rook hadn’t planned for him? Vil was sure his heart was becoming so big it would take just another blow for it to explode.
“I’m so delighted, my Vil, you like it” Rook said later.
Vil passed him the smoothie.
“Would you like to taste it?”
And there it was, that brief moment when Rook’s eyes locked into his, full of a predatory light, and Vil was sure a chill going down his spine. They were alone, sure; still, they were in public.
Vil sat straight, and gave Rook a puzzled look.
“Oh, my Vil” Rook began, and took the smoothie from the other’s hand.
“If you desired a kiss so much, you should’ve asked me in another way.”
Rook took a long sip, and he never stopped looking at Vil who felt his cheeks turning as red as fire. Yet, he was quick to regain control of himself.
He took the smoothie away from Rook, and looked at him playful, flirty.
“As if I would need to make such a fuss to kiss you,” Vil said in a malicious tone. He then let a thumb go over Rook’s lips, as there were some crumbs there.
“I won’t let you kiss me with oregano on your face, though” Vil commented then, and Rook answered with a laugh. He followed Vil in that movement, and their lips were now pressed together in a sweet, quick kiss anticipating some kind of audacity that would be more appropriate for a later time, when there was no one there that could interrupt their love.
They brushed their noses, slowly, and both Rook and Vil laughed like little kids experiencing love for the first time. Vil then kept eating, but they didn’t stop flirting and playing like lovebirds in a room where they were now alone, free to be themselves only and to feel at peace. The bar was now full of their laughter, and the clear sound of their kisses.
“So, what are your thoughts?” Rook asked him at some point. He had passed the bread plate to Vil, so he could eat the last piece. Vil thanked him and devoured the toasted bread, realizing only now how hungry he actually was.
“On the visit, you mean?” Vil asked back, and then had a sip of his smoothie. Rook nodded, waiting for his judgment. His hunter was calm; however, there was a hint of nervousness in his eyes, as if the success of the day was dependent on Vil’s opinion only. And how could Vil speak ill of that beautiful surprise? He felt as if his chest was about to catch fire to the point words didn’t make sense anymore. Vil tried to formulate some coherent phrases, yet their meaning seemed to fade when he was ready to speak. There was really no sound, no word created in this world that was enough to tell Rook how lucky he felt, how in love he was.
Vil was going through a rough time because of his job, yet Rook managed to transform his free day into something magical that felt like a loving and tender embrace, meant to shield Vil from the frenzy of life. Rook had remembered his wishes only to make him feel special in a day meant only for them.
What could Vil desire more? What would Vil ask more, when Rook was capable of gifting him something he wished for? Not only that, but Rook was able to make him happy as if it wasn’t a chore, as if it didn’t tire him out, sustained by that love Vil would’ve used in the future to surprise him in return.
Vil thought a bit about his answer, then he offered a smile to Rook.
“Well, this sure isn’t your typical museum visit...”
And Rook laughed, even before Vil was able to finish his sentence. Because he knew, he knew Vil wasn’t criticizing him, and his words were simply a prelude to something more.
“And that’s what makes it so special. I believe we should” Vil suddenly stopped to enjoy Rook’s hand caressing his face. That simple gesture was enough to interrupt the flow of his thoughts, as Rook’s touch was warm, and sweet, and Vil couldn’t help but melt under his hunter’s affection, melt under Rook’s eyes that were full of light.
“Should we reorganize something, mmh?” Rook proposed to him, never interrupting his gesture.
And Vil gave him the fondest smile, his mind already focused on that question.
“You know, I’ve heard that around your birthday, they will make a beautiful art show in Harveston…”

i’m high but i feel like modern “queer” activism is like: you’re gay so you’re weird but that’s okay! and real gay activism was like: you’re gay and you’re not weird for it!
#omg this#this is exactly how i perceive the “queer activism#the thing is that for queer activists everything is a performance#so many of them says shit like#you may be gay but you’re not acting really queer#excuse me? my sexuality is not an act#to be queer is to perform because they would be nothing without that performance#but us gays and lesbians will simply be…homosexuals#and they hate it
