Is Saxon capable of love? Like, any kind of love, not just romantic-sexual.

This has been answered by myself and others before but I'll give a fresh rant anyway. Obviously this is all just projection of what I'm reading off of a fictional character.

First I think it helps to decide what you mean by love. Is Saxon capable of caring about others? Well yes. Is Saxon, as we currently see him, capable of expressing that care in a way that is beneficial to the recipient? Well no. And love means different things to different people and looks different in different people. Do I think Saxon is capable of enacting selfless love where he puts someone else first? Well maybe not.

Saxon clearly cares about his family. I'm sure if you asked, he would tell you that he loves his family (unless he thought it was too gay to admit that).

I see Saxon as incredibly selfish, someone with definite narcissistic traits, though not necessarily full blown NPD. He's the center of his universe. People like this will still tell you they love you, and they will believe it, even if their love is suffocating and hurting you.

And people like this also tend to confuse love and control.

Consider how Saxon expresses how he cares about his siblings. He seems to view the world through rigid power structures and conventions that he adheres to and wants his siblings to adhere to as well, believing that this will somehow protect them in their lives. "Don't you want the big dogs to respect you?", "i don't wanna see you wasting away your life". This is Saxon expressing that he cares about his siblings, that he cares about what happens to them or their theoretical happiness in life. But it comes off as more controlling than affectionate. Saxon spending his whole week trying to get Lochlan laid when Lochlan barely utters a word of enthusiasm towards the idea comes off as more controlling than affectionate, but I'm sure Saxon believes that this is real bonding and he's doing Lochlan a favor because he cares about him.

I also think Saxon views love through the lens of worship. I could look at how he treats Lochlan and Piper and say I don't think Saxon is capable of putting those he loves before himself, but if I look at how he interacts with his father, it's different. I think Saxon would absolutely put his father before himself and clearly already has, sacrificing his entire life to mold it in Timothy's image to receive love from him. Because Saxon worships Timothy and believes that performing that worship will earn him love. Conversely, someone like Lochlan needs to worship Saxon in order for him to register that as love.

Control, worship, power dynamics, the inability to be vulnerable, the inability to understand or respect another person's boundaries - none of this really sounds like love does it? I would argue it is. Sort of. Love is a basic human need but Saxon was clearly not brought up in a way that gave him healthy tools for gaining love or expressing his own.

But - what I love about the full moon party sequence is that we actually get to see what Saxon's love might look like if he were able to be vulnerable and let his guard down. We don't get a real in depth look and there is next to no dialogue, but Saxon clings to Lochlan the whole night. He has his arm around him for most of the night. He looks at him with a softness, we get to observe a few hours where Saxon is just enjoying Lochlan for the sake of him being Lochlan and not trying to force an agenda down his throat. The only one he's interacting with in this sweet way is Lochlan; which to me says it's not just the drugs, it's the fact that he genuinely loves Lochlan and suddenly feels permission to express that. (And I could also keep going on about how Saxon does not know how to appropriately express himself in a way that's not dictated by sex, so the natural conclusion of finally dropping his guard and allowing himself to feel unadulterated intimacy with Lochlan is what results in him eroticizing it and ending up in bed with him).

So, all that to say, I think the better question isn't wether or not Saxon is capable of love (because most anyone who exists is capable of SOME form of loving), but if you'd want to be the receiver of the kind of love that Saxon is capable of. That's gonna be a 'no' from me dawg.

I also realize that I typed all of this out in the context of "do I think Saxon WAS capable of love in the present moment of the show". As to wether or not I think he is capable of being more loving in the future - my example from the full moon party is to demonstrate that I think some kind of pure love that makes the other person feel good is in there, deep down. I think if he really wants to change and fears ending up alone, and can stop blaming everyone around him for his own faults (big hurdles!) we can see some change. But he's almost 30 and very stuck in his ways, so I think giving others a selfless love that is beneficial and not harmful to them will always be something he struggles with, even if he works hard to improve himself. But that's not to say that isn't capable of getting better at it.

But keep in mind I tend to be more optimistic toward Saxon than many others are - I think others would give you a resounding no and honestly that's valid too. Because what is love if not the way it is felt and experienced by the person it is being given to? And no one being loved by Saxon appears to be having a good time.
