I’ve matured and realized the appeal of Illumi is just how off he is.

Don’t know if I have any followers from the Appalachia area but there’s this cryptid called the ‘Not Deer’ and most of the time it’s just a deer infected with chronic wasting disease. I had a run in with one when I was a child, I was out hiking and my dog ran off the path which was odd since he was very well trained and going off leash was normal. But anyways, when I caught up to him there was a buck just standing there, staring at me, meanwhile my dog is barking damn near a foot away from it. But it was frightening.

Growing up around deer, you expect them to act a certain way. They startle easily, run at the slightest noise, and if you ever get close to one and catch them off guard they freeze for a second and then make a mad dash away from you. But this one stood there, and stared at me. Anyways, when my mom caught up she yelled at me to go back on the trail and slowly crept up to our dog to get him back on the leash. When we went back a few weeks later, my dog beelined back to that spot and we found the remains. The buck hadn’t moved from that spot and had died where we encountered it.

All of that to say that Illumi gives me the same exact fear I felt in the moment when I encountered that deer. A primal ‘this isn’t right’ type of feeling that stems from past experience and expectations. I don’t want to say he’s inhuman, but he doesn’t bother himself in ‘being’ if that makes any sense. He’s kind of stripped everything away to be this perfect assassin, and in doing so has alienated himself from what it’s like to be human. He doesn’t emote properly, doesn’t care to pretend.

Such a long winded way of saying that Illumi gives off uncanny valley vibes. You look at him and just have a gut wrenching moment where you know something is deeply wrong.
