Excited to be part of this years Melbourne Flower Show with the MAVA collective of artists. I spent a lovely day on Wednesday exploring and then minding the display and chatting to visitors with Karen Hopkins. Where do you feel most connected to those heart spaces that feed the soul. Is it on nature, creating … a garden… an inspired meal or an artistic passion… maybe it’s somewhere list in your beautiful garden or walking on a bush track surrounded by trees. For me it is a combination of all of these but most often it is that creative space in my studio where I get to pause and breathe into new stories and connections. Nature is that space of filling up@from the outside in and art is the soul response. I would love to know what spaces are those healing, self care spaces that fill you up so you can be all you desire in all the other stories that fill your world. There is such joy in starting a conversation about what your soul wants and needs to thrive. Hearing there heart song in those spaces of messy beauty. There is a s so much joy here and so many choices. Blue wrens want to have fun and enjoy each moment. They choose and choose again as they follow there instinct. It feels appropriate that these little birds are encouraging me to play a little differently. It is that sense of what is it that I love and how do I share more of that? How do I create the energy and connection that is intuitive and often ( as in this small piece) spontaneous.? This is that question of what do I want to focus on and why. I am bought back to the knowing that everything I create is nature reimagined through my art and stories. For me this is a time of letting go and choosing my path as we move into 2023. My focus is always nature and I am choosing to play in this beautiful messy field and see what new stories evolves. For now I am adding birds to my owl focus and holding this as my wondering and curiosities for 2023. Finding space As I return to this owl painting, I cover and let go. Art is a powerful way to let go. As the world shifts and you grow with it so do the art stories that seek to be shared. Every new experience shifts and connects with another. The freedom of working large alters the story with smaller pieces. Letting go is not easy but often it is exactly what is needed. Magical spaces in nature Don’t you just love the moments when you witness the messy beauty of nature and a bird flits in and darts from space to space. That sense of boundless energy and play always makes me smile. He is perched ready to move in an instant. This energy of play and movement poised between action. From the delight of large flowing connections to the finer details of my A4 pieces. So much learning in each space of exploring the stories that emerge. There is an energy of anticipation and joy as I allow an image to take form. She is in her garden watching her world. There is a sense of presence and strength as she calmly observes her evolving story. Layers of paint and ink have been built in layers over the collage and pen beneath. My Owl Whimsy and friends collection is growing… yes there is a blue wren in there. I do plan to add more wildlife but I am I. Live with the feed on of owl wisdom at the moment. It fits my learning curiosity personality. I am so not a curated feed type but am learning more focus as I go along. This is me in decision mode. Which 4 to pick? Something shifted this morning… still wondering as I add new layers. This little piece felt finished yesterday but today I needed to create more freedom… often the next day and a little space shows me the next layer. The flowing lines were holding her too tight. The swirls became 3 hearts rather than 1. I call her leaning into heart spaces. I know there is a little more to go but she is feeling closer to that heart vision. Her claws have shifted and she feels more grounded but that is still forming. It is really all about the feeling which this guided intuitive process. I have come to understand that nothing is finished until it leaves the studio. And so my feed is full of art in process. It is always learning and leaning into the heart spaces of growth and learning. This path of opening to curiosity and allowing change is what creates possibilities and balances and grounds my art life. Our unique stories… Every owl and animal evolves so differently… owls in particular stand out for their uniqueness… I do believe I love them so much because they are so divergent. I was never good at colouring within the lines. There were always other stories that wanted the freedom to explore and discover all those curiosities and questions that light me up. I have been told that learning is my superpower. It feels a little Ironic for a dyslexic but the key has always been in the curiosity. I love the hashtag #madebydyslexia and all the publicity around the power of thinking differently. Art as visual literacy was my way into text literacy… I even wrote a thesis on visual literacy. Art is how I make meaning of all the possibilities and also the overwhelm that words can hold. Art was my way to make meaning so I could decode text and become both visual and text literate. Art was my way through creating a door when school felt like a wall. That was a bit of ramble but really I am fascinated by difference and all those unique stories that are so rich with wondering and possibilities. Not last week… It always surprises me as I lean into trusting this intuitive process. I couldn’t complete this a week ago… I had to wait until the next part of the story revealed itself to me. This is about meaning making and pausing to listen to what this story needs. The random spiral patterns flowing from and around the owl are energy connections. It’s always about the connections. I have always loved spirals but something shifted as I connected to rabbit energy over the lunar new year. I started to play with the line work around and overlapping as part of a flow of nature. This started with the new year rabbit. I know these lines and they keep returning to my art story over time. I feel that I want more of this in the art I’m creating now as it feels like earth healing which is so needed now. The lines are the guided story path which is never straight as a sense of exploration through the nature. I feel a deep desire to connect to the energy of nature and her grounding, calm stories. These pieces are about that messy beauty of discovery and curiosity. How to be in the moment 1- Find an echidna 2- get down to ground level 3 - watch the curiosity and play No echidnas around… sit and imagine you are this echidna- the perfect blend of play and curiosity. This is exactly what we did at the historic quarantine station on Bruny Island Tasmania. Watching these beautiful creatures move and explore with such curiosity is such a joy. They remind me to take one step at a time and allow life to flow around you. I did start this last month on Bruny Island and felt called to complete her. Still a little more to do on the collages ground she is walking on and maybe some glazing play with the spirals. I am really attracted to spirals dots and patterns at the moment. They really are a lovely way of holding that sense of the energy of nature. Echidnas are delightful Australian animals that always bring me back into a space of pausing into the moment. Layers of learning The energy of these bright little birds fills me with joy… I really wanted to capture some of that feeling. The spirals in the new year bunnies definitely influenced this bright story. Wrens are such social, energetic souls as they flit by. Finding lovely connections as I explore more birds and these evolving moments in nature. I do hope you had time to pause on this public holiday….
