TIL that after a 4-year-old was declared brain dead in 1983, doctors kept his body "alive" for more than 20 years.
This report describes the brain autopsy of a boy who at age 4K years experienced an episode of fulminant Haemophilus influenzae type b bacterial meningitis, resulting in massive brain destruction and the clinical signs of brain death. However, medical intervention maintained him for an additional two decades.
On discharge from his last hospitalisation, his mother decided that no further resuscitative efforts should be undertaken, and he experienced a cardiac arrest in January 2004. Following his death, a brain-only autopsy was performed.

Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Friere
Synopsis:
'The foremost work on the key democratic task: helping people to identify and challenge the sources of their oppression ... a transformative text' George Monbiot, Guardian
Arguing that 'education is freedom', Paulo Freire's radical international classic contends that traditional teaching styles keep the poor powerless by treating them as passive, silent recipients of knowledge. Grounded in Freire's own experience teaching impoverished and illiterate students in his native Brazil and over the world, this pioneering book instead suggests that through co-operation, dialogue and critical thinking, every human being can develop a sense of self and fulfil their right to be heard.
