Malinche
In November of 2018, there was a television series that was launched about La Malinche and her life on Canal Once. All five episodes put together cover the time frame from the time that La Malinche met Cortes to the time she had Hernan Cortes’ son. The film shows why the topic of La Malinche being a traitor or a victim is very controversial.

A Change of heart for La Malinche
It was not until the year 1960 when people started seeing La Malinche in a new light. People started to realize that La Malinche was not just the translator of Hernan Cortes. Before she was sold off by a Maya Chief, she had already been sold off by her own Aztec people. She had already experienced a history of not being wanted and being enslaved and raped. She helped Hernan Cortes and received a life that her family would have never given her.

Could you blame her?
La Malinche is usually seen in one of two ways by people. Some consider her to be a hero, while others consider her a traitor to her own people. As discussed in a previous post, she was sold by her own people. Could you blame her for ‘being a traitor’ and for helping Cortes conquer Mexico. She in a way felt some type of power being able to help translate for Cortes, something she lost when she was given to Cortes along with 19 other women.

A Gift to Hernan Cortes
La Malinche was among the 19 other young women given as a slave to Hernan Cortes by the Chontal Maya of Potonchan as a present to seal the peace, after the Spaniards defeated them in battle. At this time she was in her late teens or early twenties.

La Malinche was sold to..
Since Malinche was sold to many ownerships that forced her to learn several languages, amongst them the Maya-yucateca and Nahuatl. During that time she befriended Jeronimo de Aguilar; a spanish priest who was kept as a prisoner for the Mayas for eight years, who also taught her spanish. Her knowledge of the language would come in handy in the future.

**There has been a long dispute whether she has been wrongfully accused as a traitor or not.
Let’s talk about her life and story
La Malinche also known as Malinalli, Malintzin or Dona Marina was born sometime between 1496 and 1501 in the region between the Aztec-ruled Valley of Mexico and the Maya states of the Yucatan Peninsula. According to Bernal Diaz del Castillo, a conquistador who took part in the conquest of Mexico, “She La Malinche was born a ruler-her parents had the dominion of a township called Painala, which was lying about twenty-four miles from the town of Guacasalco.” When she was younger her father died and her mother remarried. The new marriage produced a son, “and to whom, after their parents’ death, they designed to leave their territories.” La Malinche was seen as being in the way of their plans and was sold as a slave to a group of Mayan Slavers from Xicalango.  Her family faked her death by saying that a recently deceased child of a slave was Malinche, the slavers sold her to Chontal Mayans where she learned their language. La Malinche was then given as tribute to Tabscoop, the cacique of Tabasco.

LA MALINCHE AND HER CONTROVERSIAL ROLE.
LA MALINCHE HAS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE DURING THE SPANISH CONQUEST OF THE AZTEC EMPIRE.
MANY REGARDED HER AND SOME STILL DO AS A TRAITOR OF HER OWN PEOPLE, BECAUSE SHE SERVED THE SPANISH CONQUISTADORS.
