I am glad that we can agree and disagree without it coming to a fight

It is also not a reproach to James, given his background and what he has been through, I understand that he literally "had no time to really be a father".

Moreover, Mathilde was not planned, but an accident, which did come from their love and was a pleasant acident in the end.

And somewhere I also understand Madeleine that she wanted to protect her daughter from the violent life that both her grandfather Mr White and her father James even led

However, if she lied because she was jealous that James also gave love to Mathilde and not only to her or because of what happened in Italy, I do blame her for that… If you take James back into your life and forgive him for all that, you do that completely and therefore you also allow the daughter into his life.

I just keep wondering what her motivation was for her "she is not yours" and whether that lie would also be maintained if James had survived the island? Did Madeleine ever tell the truth or were James and Mathilde never allowed to interact as real father and daughter according to Madeleine???

like madeline tells him mathilde isn’t his kid—and surely james knew that was a lie because he has eyes, but he accepts that madeline isn’t ready to give him the truth. it wouldn’t really matter to him in the end anyway, because the kid was madeline’s so he would protect her with his life regardless.

mathilde wakes james up the next morning and says she’s hungry. so he finds a kid’s show for her to watch while he cooks and he very carefully peels an apple for her. he watches her take a bite and asks how it is, and when she says that it’s good, his mouth scrunches like he’s trying not to grin.

james would’ve done literally anything for that kid. would’ve let her put bows in his hair and would’ve tied her shoes and would’ve listened very seriously as she confided to him about bad dreams. this is a guy who loves so wholly, so entirely. he protects just as fiercely. he was literally made to be a dad and i’m actually so upset that he didn’t get that.

Giving a sweater to the daughter of your loved one is very sweet of course, but that does not make you a father and Mathilde knows that too when you look at her reaction at the end when she looks away from her so-called father

The fact that he sees her mainly as "Madeleine's daughter" and not as his daughter, makes him much more of a sweet stepfather or friendly partner of the mother, than a real loving devoted father, which is actually so disturbing in the film.

Madeleine's leugen en het feit dat ze zo centraal staat bij James in plaats van bij het kind, vind ik zo jammer in de film. Ook zonder Mathilde zou James zich opgeofferd hebben voor Madeleine, omdat hij zijn schoonvader beloofd had haar te beschermen met zijn leven en ook uit liefde voor haar.

Mathilde is een lief schattig kind, maar doet eigenlijk niet echt iets voor James omdat Madeleine het belangrijkste is voor James en niet voor het kind. Dat zie je duidelijk terug in zijn afscheidsgesprek waar het kind nauwelijks genoemd wordt en alleen als compliment aan Madeleine genoemd wordt. Het is heel jammer van dit slechte scenario, maar ik heb hierdoor nooit de echte vader in James gevoeld
