Levi x Reader
Angst | Modern - Soulmate AU | 7k words
Tumblr media
Summary : being dead since the 19th century, your 200-year-old house in the countryside had been sold to Levi Ackerman. He stumbles upon your old diary and reads it, only to slowly fall in love with you as he continues to read the pages.
Tumblr media
Who would have known love could exist between two people separated not only by centuries, but also by death itself ?
Tumblr media
" —in the next life, where there is no marriage, but where souls find each other through intimacy, may I attain true love. "
Tumblr media
Characters: Levi, Kuchel, Kenny, Hange, Erwin, Miche, Rod
Content Warning: cancer, implied domestic violence, implied suicide, misogyny

Note: I made the reader a feminist because I don't think there are much fics that include feminist political themes. Also, I usually use they/them pronouns for Hange, but I will be using she/her pronouns in this work.

“Here are the keys. Enjoy your new home, Mr. Ackerman.”
 ㅤ
The real estate agent had an air of arrogance, one that Levi Ackerman couldn’t help but detest. Caught up in his own thoughts, Levi barely noticed how the man’s eyes were far too big for his head.
 ㅤ
Ah yes, real estate agent Rod Reiss, whose egotistic demeanor struck an odd contrast to his shabby appearance. That seemed to be an enigma to Levi. However, the Ackerman didn't care to figure out which of those two qualities was more irksome.
 ㅤ
He just wanted to get the transaction over with and move into his newly-bought home.
The house stood tall with its Victorian style architecture, surrounded by a lush forest and lonely hills. The rural areas of Paradis were the last place on Earth he had expected to live in. However, this had been his mother’s wish since they had gotten the news that she had cancer—to grow old in a home she loved.
Kuchel wasn't gravely ill, but Levi still wanted to grant her wish. An hour drive from here to his job in the city was a small price to pay in exchange for his mother’s comfort and happiness.
The house seemed even lovelier than it did in the pictures. And Kuchel soon felt as though she had lived here for years. Levi had always been her son, but now she saw something new in him: he had grown into a man who was kind and sweet.
 ㅤ
The real estate agent seemed hesitant, but nevertheless, was still determined to speak up. “Also, keep everything the (l/n) family left behind. Their belongings come with the house you paid for. If I may have a say, put it up for auction. Century-old antiques cost a fortune!”
 ㅤ
“So we’d have to throw all that ye olden times junk away ourselves?” Levi mumbled more to himself than to Rod Reiss—who was now taking his leave after successfully selling the estate.
 ㅤ
Kuchel had always adored antiques, so she didn't quite appreciate her son's rude remark. “It isn’t junk! I even heard Kenny say there was a piano in the living room. Maybe you could get back into playing.”
 ㅤ
A comment was then heard from the mentioned uncle, Kenny, who was quite displeased with the lack of help in unloading their stuff from the van. “Oi, what ya waiting for, runt? Let’s get settled in.”
 ㅤ
“Keep calling me a runt and you’ll be sleeping in the attic, old man.”
The castle-like detail of their new home felt like being part of the romance and history of a by-gone era. From the vibrant flowery wallpaper, to the steeply-pitched roofs. Levi didn’t mind the design though, it made him happy to see how this house had captured his mother’s heart.
His only concern was the thick layers of dust which covered everything in sight; it was a depressing dirty grey—contrasting the elaborately decked out home that reveled in its bright colors.
 “Filthy.”
There it was again, Levi’s obsession with cleanliness. Kuchel giggled at the thought, it had become an inside joke within the family. “Yes, filthy indeed. Just like your uncle. I had to put a handkerchief over my nose the entire ride so I wouldn’t smell the three-days-no-shower stench.”
 ㅤ
The subject of their conversation then appeared in the room, “No shit, I have been blessed with the misfortune of calling you a sister.”
 ㅤ
“Kenny, when was the last time you took a bath? And I’m not even trying to be offensive, you really do stink.”
 ㅤ
“Aight aight, I get your point, gonna wash up when I’m done cleaning. I’ll mop the kitchen and dining. Levi, you do the rooms and the attic.”
Though the shorter man thought the division of tasks was unfair, he decided to remain quiet and nod in agreement.
The attic was, by far, the most interesting part of the house, and much to his dismay, also the dustiest.
Levi made his way through the junk, broken furniture, and trinkets. It was like reading the story of somebody’s life, he thought, as he gazed at all these things that had been used once, that had been part of every day in the house below.
Someone had savored each page of the books on the shelf, or maybe someone used to watch the minutes of the grandfather clock tick with interest. But those people were long dead, or gone away, and now the oddments of their lives were piled up here, forgotten.
It was a bittersweet thought.
The man decided to start with the bookshelf that expanded across the wall. Halfway through dusting, he spotted something in the corner of his eye. It was a book with a gleaming golden spine, reflecting the sun’s rays that welcomed itself in from the windows.
Levi was an apathetic individual by nature. He didn’t particularly care about things that weren’t his own business. But there was an odd vibe to the mentioned book; it was so inviting.
A tingling in his bones warned him that he shouldn’t open it, but his curiosity placated him, driving him onward against his instincts.
The dust beneath its aging covers represented how patient time was—how the book allowed dust particles to hide its golden touches until the waiting time was over.
Without any further ado, he flipped it open. Eyes widening at realization, the book was actually a journal.

“What an ugly name.” Levi snorted, never really understanding parents and their poor naming choices.
Dear reader, I dare you not to turn the page if you refuse to read of a lousy, miserable life. Yet, if you do wish to seek such knowledge even after warning, then must I say you are one nosy fellow!
His interest in the book—or more accurately, his interest in the journal—immediately vanished as he didn’t want to snoop into a random dead girl’s business, into your lousy and miserable business.
He reckoned it was going to be about boy problems anyway, which was what most women he knew in high school wrote about in their stupid diaries. And surely, that wasn’t any interesting.
However, a thought abruptly entered his mind.  In many ways, diaries chart unmapped territory, especially diaries of those who had lived in the past. Levi wondered what lives were like before—to get a sense of the attitudes, opinions, and beliefs that motivated individuals of a different era.
Written on a regular basis, journals provide commentary on life as it is lived. And this sense of immediacy pulled Levi in and fueled his curiosity in reading about the past in a direct, unfiltered way.
Making the final decision to indeed snoop into your business, he flipped the pages, eyes following the words of what seemed to be the first entry:
12th of January, 1821
Last night at dinner, I tried to convince father that I am not meant for marriage, and marriage is not meant for me. My husband-to-be’s ignorance is only one reason in the long list of his shortcomings. Yet, there was no possibility in changing father’s mind.
Today, I had been wandering in the leafless shrubbery an hour in the morning. The cold winter wind had brought with it clouds so somber, and a rain so penetrating, that further outdoor activity should be forbidden. But that did not matter, I needed to get away from that cursed household, even if the winter were to freeze me with its icy breath.
“How melodramatic.” Though he pitied the misogynistic situation you found yourself troubled in, Levi couldn’t help but cringe at the thought that he was indeed right—it was about boy problems.
The man took a peek at the outside world through the high windows, taking in the sight of the orange sunset.
Kenny and Kuchel were probably waiting for him downstairs, wondering what was taking him so long when dinner was soon approaching. He closed your journal, and placed it back on the shelf.
Letting out a tired sigh, he had barely started on the reason behind why he even came here in the first place. Cleaning the attic would have to wait another day then.

At Kuchel’s check-up session two months ago, it was discovered that she was terminally ill, and her cancer was incurable. The only reason she was still taking palliative chemotherapy was for less suffering.
Kenny had never prayed a lot. He hoped hard, he wished hard, but he didn't pray. Yet when he discovered his sister’s impending death, he prayed to whatever deity that was up there—hoping for her recovery even when there was nothing else to hope for.
But hope is what keeps us going, right? Without it, the struggle against cynicism and loss of spirit would be greater than the slow, inevitable death of cancer. So Kenny held onto that little hope in his heart and supported his sister at every step of the way.
Though, what he didn’t support was Kuchel’s decision of hiding the truth from Levi.
“The runt is going to find out sooner or later. For fuck’s sake, you are dying. Don’t you think Levi deserves to know that? ”
“First of all, stop calling my son a runt. Second, I will tell him. Not now, but soon.” The frail woman took a slow and long sip from her tea, eyeing her brother from the rim of the cup. She knew Kenny was right, but still refused to listen to his argument anyway.
“Soon? When you’re already on your deathbed?”
A pair of approaching footsteps were heard. Kenny immediately zipped his mouth shut while Kuchel greeted her son. “Good morning, sweetheart. Did you sleep well?”
“Good morning.“
“Ahh fuck it, I can’t take it anymore. Levi, your mother has something to tell you.” All attention quickly drifted to the tall male, who was annoyed by how his sister was skirting around the issue they had been discussing only a minute ago.
The tension in the room grew thicker by each passing second, especially when Levi demanded to know what this was all about, “What’s going on?”
“I’m just. Aah…” The frail woman’s dilemma had not went unnoticed by the two men. She was clearly buying time, “I’m just upset. Chemotherapy has been causing my hair to fall out. It’s just really upsetting… especially for an ex-model.”
Part of Levi was relieved to hear that the news wasn’t as serious as he thought it would be, but he still couldn’t help but feel bad for his mother, “I see. Would you feel better if I bought you a wig?”
“Yes, I’d very much appreciate that. Thank you, sweetheart.”
Kenny rolled eyes at his family’s exchange of words, not pleased with Kuchel’s dishonesty.
“If not today, I’ll get you the wig by tomorrow. I’m going now. See you later.” With that, the young adult left for his 10 am shift at work.
“When are you going to tell him?” Inquired Kenny, choosing to speak only once he was certain his nephew was out of earshot.
“When I am ready.”
Hange fixed her glasses and wore a sinister grin, eager to annoy Levi so early in the morning, “Good morning, how’s my favorite sour face?”
“Never miss a good chance to shut up.” He prayed that Hange would someday finally learn to appreciate peaceful silence, but clearly, today wasn’t that day just yet.
“Now is definitely not a good chance to shut up. Someone has to be responsible enough to fill in the duty of annoying you.”
“Makes sense. It does seem like the only aspect you’re capable of being responsible at.”
“Okay, rude. How’s your mom-“ The bespectacled brunette had barely finished her sentence when Levi pinched her nose. “Ow!”
“Here's your nose, I found it in my business.”
Levi then shifted his gaze to the two familiar blond men approaching—who seemingly have heard the banter between him and Hange.
Scratching his nose, “No, really, Levi. how is Mrs. Ackerman?” Miche hasn’t heard of Kuchel in a long time. since Levi refused to bring the topic up, so he was curious as to how she had been coping up with cancer.
“I thought the years we’ve spent working together would grant you the knowledge that my mother’s name is Ms. Ackerman, not Mrs. Ackerman.”
“My apologies.”
The shorter fellow ran a hand through his black hair, letting out a sigh. “And about mom—she’s alright, though the more intensive course of chemotherapy has been kicking her ass.”
An awkward silence descended for a moment. Kuchel was always a sensitive topic, not to mention, Levi’s crass choice of words made the entire situation more uncomfortable.
Erwin finally decided to contribute to the conversation and break the growing tension, “I’m sorry to hear that, we hope her chemotherapy will be worth it in the long run.” The tall blond also cued for their small group to walk along to their respective desks, where piles upon piles of paperwork awaited.
Though Levi would never verbally admit it to his mother, he was starting to get attached to the rural landscape. There was a sense of serenity from the sight of swaying grasslands during his drive home from work. Maybe the countryside wasn’t so bad after all.
“I’m home.” He hung his coat on the rack and walked to the kitchen, where he assumed his mother would be. It was a rather amusing scene before Levi: Kuchel hitting Kenny with kitchen utensils as he tried to sneak a piece of meat into his mouth.
The frail woman’s facial expression turned from threatening to gentle as she heard her son’s approaching footsteps. “Oh, hello sweetheart. Did you just arrive?
“Yeah. Although I wish I had gotten home sooner to see more of Kenny getting assaulted with a spatula.”
A pair of eyes rolled in annoyance, “Not funny. And before I forget, there had been some sounds from the attic. Probably mice. Check it, will ya? I’d prefer you throw it away, but if you’d like a new addition to your small circle of friends, I won’t judge.”
“Hmm. just say you don’t have the balls to check it yourself.”
“Boys, please mind your language!”
Once more, the attic had an eerie abandoned feeling to it. The very clearness of silence drew an intense feeling Levi couldn’t shake off. The air around him hummed with an energy that was foreign yet nostalgic.
And there it was again, the familiar book resting on the shelf. Its shiny golden spine, a contrast to the dimly lit room. It was a mysterious journal really, seeming to know secrets he didn’t, inviting him to take another peak. After all, the unknown draws people in—
No. He came here for one purpose only. And that was to search for the source of the sounds. That and that only.
However, it doesn’t take a genius to recognize when someone is being pushed by a circumstance to do something. And for Levi, this was it. Destiny’s (or whatever you call it) interventions can sometimes be read as an invitation to explore.
With that said, the man abandoned his original purpose and flipped your diary open, picking up at where he last left off.
3rd of February, 1821
Elliott Dickens, the man I am expected to marry. The main reason why father wants me to wed him is because he is a duke in Marley.
I don’t even know a single thing about dukes! Except maybe for the fact that dukes are the highest-ranking title among nobles, and that they own large amounts of inherited property.
But I have no interest in them, their wealth, nor their corrupt practices. Moreover, I have no interest in moving away to Elliott’s hometown.
People are beginning to flock from rural areas to large urban locations like Marley. Though I cannot blame these people for wanting more job opportunities in the city, but I love it here in Paradis! I do not intend of leaving this province behind.
This is where I grew up. Every spot here is familiar history.
I know I can't own a prairie, a meadow, nor a mountainside. But keeping the beauty of Paradis a secret somehow makes it mine.
Only here may you see nature revealing herself in all her glory. A poet can write of it, a painter can paint of it, but neither can reproduce the same air of reality that sinks deep into the soul of the spectator.
Both my eyes and mind are delighted in this place I’ve known as home.
There was a pause, then Levi’s lips stretched into a smile. You were right. You convinced him that Paradis was indeed a place of solace.
It was refreshing to look across vast spaces of grassland, to lift one’s eyes with delight, to feel the peace that rests on lonely hills. Levi had only been living here for a short while, but Paradis was already starting to feel like home to him.
This is where he had learned to appreciate silence in a world that never stops talking.
His entire life, Levi Ackerman had fallen into a naiveté where he looked at the world based solely on what his physical senses can ascertain. But once he saw life through your eyes, through your own words, perhaps he was wrong.
The world perceived by our senses is different from the world perceived through our essence.
Perhaps Levi misjudged you, you weren’t as shallow as he initially thought you were.
Snapping out of his reverie, he started to look for the rodent Kenny was pertaining to. The man made a mental note to come back here and continue reading the journal… and to clean as well, since he wasn’t able to do that last time.

30th of March, 1821
Dear reader, I hope you had a lovely day, good for you because I did not.
Elliott told me, “Do you know when it is no misfortune for a young lady like you to lose her good name? It’s when a man like myself gives her a better one.”
What an audacious remark! Bold of him to say that to me when is last name is Dickens. I refuse to associate myself with a God-awful title that sounds like the filthy thing between a man’s legs.
ㅤㅤ
Forgive me Shakespeare, but I beg to differ from Romeo & Juliet: “What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would still smell as sweet.” Everything’s in a name; and I refuse the lousy title of ‘Mrs. Dickens’!
The raven-haired man snorted, Dickens was indeed a horrendous name.
Over the past weeks, Levi often felt like a voyeur sneakily reading your private writings—spending a decent amount of his personal time trying to decipher your handwriting and piecing stories together from your diary.
Funnily enough, he roughly knew of your existence before; he never knew of your name and life, because you were an individual from an era he would never get to live in. Yet here he was, seemingly the only person to have ever known you in such an unfiltered way.
He liked it. He liked the feeling of being a confidant to all your secrets.
‘Mrs. Dickens’, a big no. I refuse to inherit that title, moreover, I refuse to marry him, and any other man like him.
I am convinced that a husband will only ruin me, for in this society, women struggle to shape a life and sense of identity outside of marriage.
So, I must seek wisdom and improvement from books, as knowledge is a tool to reinvent myself!
These recent feminist political movements have deeply inspired me, and I have decided to devote a great deal of time and energy to recording my thoughts on them in writing books and diaries. Women want equality in education, labor, electoral rights, and opinion in marriage.
My pursuit of knowledge is linked with feelings of self-worth. It is a quest to remodel myself, not so I could better serve the men in my life, but so that I could better serve myself.
A mind so deep and a will so strong could never have failed to give Levi a peek on these excursions over the domains of literature and feminism that reflect on your mental prowess.
With the more he flipped the pages, with the more he got to know you, he found himself squeezed under a new astonishment.
He liked it. He liked you.
He liked you to the point that he even refused to cleaned the attic. Because by dusting off, it felt like he was erasing your footsteps, allowing your final touches upon these dusty, old things to vanish, like there was no more trace of you in this house.
Tumblr media
Levi sighed. He’d spoken about you to his mother. He told her about your hobbies, your adventures, and that you’re a wanderer who knows nothing of borders and cares nothing for rules in a misogynistic and unfair society.
He told her almost everything, but nothing about you being the dead ex-owner of this house... that little detail was to remain a closely guarded secret to himself.
”When will I meet her? This girl you talk so much of. I bet she’s a lovely lady.”
“Ah, about that… it’s just, I have no hope of ever calling her mine.”
“Why so? You’re a handsome and kind young man.”
Levi so badly wanted to tell his mother why he couldn’t introduce you to her. However, he didn’t want Kuchel to think he had a loose screw and needed his head for examination if he tried to explain this strange circumstance of romance—being in love with the dead.
“I better go and sort out my paperwork for tomorrow.” He tried, attempting to avoid the topic, but the older woman could see right through him.
She grabbed his arm just before he could leave. Kuchel looked like she wanted to say something important, yet the defeated look in her grey eyes seemed to convey that she had decided against it.
“Make sure to get some rest, okay sweetheart? I don’t want you staying up all night long again.”
Responding with a soft smile, Levi left the kitchen and made his way upstairs, leaving his mother to simply sigh in dismay at the fact that her son was clearly keeping something hidden from her.
But she couldn’t blame him though, she herself was keeping secrets too.
Levi found himself in the attic again, where there was a feeling of safety. A calm sanctuary, a dependable sense of home.
All these ye-olden-times junk, were filled with memories, filled with faded echoes that had ebbed and flowed into the walls over the years. Maybe that’s why the attic felt so homely. It was full of history and love.
Curiosity was difficult to satisfy; it was a force of nature that looked for answers even before asking questions. Curiosity had been unfairly maligned and characterized as a dangerous pursuit, as we were always taught that curiosity killed the cat.
 ㅤ
But Levi knew better. Curiosity created connections. It cultivated wonder, inquiry, and delight. It sprouted the desire to try, test, and tweak.
He had been reading wisdom from a diary he formerly did not want to read. He had been finding beauty in places he formerly did not want to look in. And he had learned so much from journeys he formerly did not want to take.
It made him wonder: how much of our lives are just luck and good timing, and how much of it was actually choice? How could it be that tiny serendipitous events could change so much of us?
He felt like each choice he had made along the way was part of something bigger than himself. Fate has a funny way of intervening just when we think we have everything in order. And as he thought about all the events that led him to this place, it struck him: so much of life is just blind luck and random chance. With every twist and turn, our lives take us in different directions: you never know what's around the corner.
 ㅤ
Levi understood that the world was governed by randomness. That's why he pursued his curiosity with passion, because he understood that chance favored the prepared mind.ㅤ
The short man rummaged through the attic, looking for more answers about you from outside the journal. He came across what seemed to be a pile of belongings, covered by an old, dusty cloth. Yanking it off, the sudden movement sent a vortex of dust into the previously stagnant air.
And there it was, a portrait of you.
It reflected the perfect image of your figure, with all the brilliant picturesqueness of your beauty. It was strange, the way in which you looked at Levi, looking so steadfastly at him through the medium of the oil painting. It’s like you were actually there, watching him with curious eyes.
The power of your beauty held him fast, seizing him and filling a gap in his essence. There was grace in your every feature; it sparkled in your deep eyes, lurked in the corner of your lips, and even in the rich tone of your skin.
It was nice to finally put a face to the name, Levi thought.
The more he got to know you, the more he realized that you tick in all the boxes for the qualities he never knew he wanted in a woman.
However, all of this was depressing. Because no matter how much he knew and liked you, he would never have the chance to call you his.
3rd of September, 1821
I always tell myself that I would rather be happy than be dignified. That I can live alone, and I need not to sell my soul to marriage.
But sometimes, my mind slips, gradually and subconsciously. And there is an involuntary mental process that conditions me to accept reality despite my desperate efforts to never give in to societal pressure.
Once dreams wrangle with reality, we must rub our eyes open and wake up. The heavy weight of my circumstances has yet to fully sink in, but I am certain of one thing:
I am to marry Elliott Dickens, duke of Marley.
Everything moves so fast. My life will rush from heaven to hell in two weeks, when the wedding will take place. And the future will always happen, no matter how much I try to run away from it.
The decision has been made, and I am going to be a new woman soon, I am going to be Mrs. Dickens. And I will be leaving everything behind, including this diary.
To write my heart out—it was freedom to a degree I have not experienced much of before.
But did that mean all my freedom had been used up? Because at the moment, I am unsure of what to write… How strange it is that when I feel most fervently, it is as though my hands and tongue are tied; I cannot express myself!
This is going to be the last entry, thank you for making it this far with me.
Last entry?
A sense of sorrow set deep inside him. The persistent feeling of emptiness practically had Levi forced into submission and taken hostage by it. All he could do was stare into space, letting it wash over him.
Was this it? Despite all your efforts, you still chose to marry the duke?
Then what was the point of writing? Wasn’t it for silent revolution? For feminism? For freeing yourself?
Or was it only meant for catharsis?
Maybe it was. After all, writing was meant for those whose thoughts wouldn’t fit their limited mind. So, you used the power of words as a tool to pour your soul on paper. And Levi knew that.
Levi did not think of you as future Mrs. Dickens, a soon-to-be aristocratic wife of a duke. To him, you were simply you. For he knew you better than anyone else could have. He knew you were just a lonely girl, waiting to be read by someone, hoping that you would make sense to at least one person.
He yearned to stay in this in-between place. Where he was both in modern times and in the past. Where romance existed everywhere and nowhere all at once.
And just as you had written these entries for him to read, he knew with unshakable certainty that in those little moments, even in a dream, were more real and better than anything he’d known.
How beautiful it was to replace the world inside him with someone else’s reality. The way you allowed him to look into your deepest fears and desires, your artful poems, your treasured secrets, your worst nightmares, and your most beautiful dreams.
Your writings unraveled emotions inside him, uncovered new parts of him that were hidden, and breathed a new him into existence with each word that was written.
It made him feel alive and vulnerable. It made him feel human.
It made Levi feel so much that sometimes he wished all your poems he were written for him, because his heart, with its hooks, was looking for something—or someone—to love.
Tumblr media
It had been an awfully long day at work for Levi. Piles upon piles of documents never seemed to lessen. It also didn’t help that all he could think of was you, keeping his mind away from successfully accomplishing work.
He was just about to enter his car when a small bell-like sound from his phone was heard.
Clicking his tongue, he mumbled a quiet ‘what now’ out of frustration. It was a text from Kenny, which was weird since Kenny rarely contacted him.
KENNY
5:27 PM
“Where the fuck are you?”
KENNY
Frowning, Levi continued to read the message.
5:28 PM
“It's your mother. The doctor is here at home, but they say it’s likely she wouldn’t make it through the night.”
A heavy weight settled in his stomach. His heart pounded out of control.
Shit.
Kenny’s words kept playing on his mind like a broken record as he drove as fast as he could to get home, not caring about beating the red light. He mentally cursed at the fact that it took nearly an hour to get back to the countryside from work.
The sun dipped below the horizon—the fleeting colors of dusk beginning to fade away—indicating the end of another day, and the end of another life.
Upon parking the vehicle, Levi didn’t even bother closing the car door as he ran into the house and up the stairs.
Dread increasing with every step, he saw Kenny and a short lady—most probably the doctor—standing in front of his mother’s room by the end of the hall, as if they were waiting for his arrival.
Before the man could even yank the door open, he was stopped by the doctor. “I assume you’re Levi, Kuchel’s son? I’m Petra Ral, an oncologist from the specialist cancer team of your mother. May I have a minute?”
It took everything in him to not scold at the ginger woman. What could possibly be so important that it couldn’t wait after he’d check up on his mother?
Despite the glare Levi was shooting at her, Petra continued her words, trying to phrase her message in a concise fashion, “The cancer in her breasts have spread to her lymphatic system, her lungs, liver, and bones-“
“Just get to the point. So it’s incurable?”
“I’m sorry Mr. Ackerman. There’s nothing more we can do about it.” There was a brief pause. Heavily sighing, the doctor continued, “As you know, according to her latest consultations these past months, the more intense chemotherapy sessions haven’t been successful so we-“
“As I know? I wasn’t informed of this at all.” Levi shifted his gaze to his uncle, sending him an icy glare, “Kenny, you knew about this all along, haven’t you? That the cancer was terminal…”
“It was Kuchel’s wish that I had to respect.”
The younger Ackerman hasn’t even fully grasped the reality of his mother’s imminent death, and suddenly this bombshell was dropped on him? That he was kept in the dark all this time? He knew her condition wasn’t getting better, but he hadn’t expected death to be knocking on her door so early.
He took a deep breath and reached for the door's handle, emotionally preparing himself from what he would be witnessing on the other side.
Finally entering the room, “Mom,” Levi’s eyes had softened at the sight before him, “Why didn’t you tell me?” He questioned right away, wasting no time. There was no malice in his voice, only pain.
He knew why she kept this from him, but he still wanted to hear it from her.
It was a good thing that Kuchel had closed her eyes, for if she had seen her son’s sorrowful expression, she might not have answered. “You’ve been under a lot of pressure at work, and I couldn’t bring myself to tell you.”
“That’s irrelevant, you should have told me so I don’t have to take this all in just one night!”
A few heartbeats were spent in silence. Both of them knew this would be their last night together, and the thought itself had them struggling to look for the right words to say in their limited time.
There was a knot in her throat which seemed impossible to swallow, “Do you… do you forgive me..?”
That was it; that was Levi’s breaking point. He couldn’t keep his normally stoic façade anymore, the tears that threatened to roll down his cheeks finally fell. He hurriedly knelt at the bedside and his arms clasped around her tightly. If hugs healed people, he’d hold her all night.
“Of course I do! I love you.”
She smiled tenderly, though it was the saddest smile she had worn.
“You have been a good son—the best even,” his dying mother said, “and all the love in your heart will help you along in the world.” One last rattling breath escaped Kuchel Ackerman’s lips as she was greeted by everlasting death.
He kissed his dead mother’s hand and wept bitterly. Then, he lifted his feet to leave her bedroom.
The rusty iron hinges of the door creaked loudly as Levi swung it open. He gave his uncle a knowing look: the look of grief.
“I see.” was all Kenny muttered as the younger Ackerman hastily walked away to his own bedroom.
He cried for hours, head under the pillow. And even in those hours, Levi could not find solace in tears. Overcome by weariness, darkness was finally kissing the edge of his vision and he surrendered himself to sleep.

It was a strange dream. He saw his mother well and strong again, and heard her laugh as she always used to laugh when she was happy. And then appeared another woman—one with familiar deep eyes. It was you.
He was confused. Why? Why were you and his mother standing before him?
You stretched your arms out to give him a warm embrace. Levi didn’t care if this was all just a product of his imagination, he crashed himself against you, wanting to savor every second.
It was a foreign feeling to be in your arms. Foreign, yet so nostalgic, so familiar, so… right.
“I wish I were granted a good life, for life is a precious gift, almost too great to understand. Levi, thank you. Thank you for the gift of your love. It made me stay alive even after I am gone.”
His hug tightened as your words registered in his head. Whatever this was, dream or reality, he just wanted to hold you, to feel you. You brushed his hair reassuringly, continuing with what you were saying, “And to think that this earthly affection will only continue to grow in another life, throughout eternity. I can barely conceive of it!”
The man was speechless. He wanted to say something, anything, but not a single word came from him.
Levi shifted his gaze to his mother, silently searching for an explanation to this surreal circumstance. “Son, see what a charming girl you’ve won.”
He gazed back at you, nothing but sincerity in his eyes. All it took was one look, and both of you knew. He pulled you in and pressed your mouth over his, claiming your lips so soft.
So this is love, huh? And suddenly, Levi was just a man with the taste of honey upon his lips.
He awakens from his slumber, and the pleasing sight was gone. Kuchel was gone. You were gone.
Tears were running down his cold cheeks, yet his lips were warm. Wait, could that mean… could that mean that the kiss was real?
Glancing to the clock: 8 in the morning. It seems as though he had slept through the night, giving temporary rest to his embittered soul. Though, he knew that the grief in his heart would not let him sleep for the next days to come.
Recalling his dream, the man immediately got onto his feet with a specific destination in mind—the attic.
As always, the dusty particles in the air reflected the sun-rays, looking like pixie dust. He walked farther into the attic, recognizing it as a place of enchantment.
Although he considered himself a logical person, he believed there existed a kind of magic in the books placed on the shelf, particularly in your diary. Secrets are magic after all, and years upon years that they've been written down on a book that had gotten dusty with age has added to its power.
Between the aging covers—represented by black letters on sheets of paper—were voices from the past. Voices that reached into the future, into Levi's own heart, and echoed in the walls of his mind.
He pulled the familiar diary from the shelf that expanded over the wall, hoping that despite your farewell, there was still going to be another entry, another piece for him to read, and another kiss of comfort to his writhing heart.
It was as if someone had literally knocked on the door; but in this case, his heart. With heavy anxiety, he opened to the part where he left off. Levi was certain that whatever deity or god was up there, they surely heard his heart's desperate pleas. Because much to his luck, there indeed was another page left unread.
14th of December, 1824
To whoever is reading this: we meet again at last! It is the first time in years that I have visited Paradis and since I have picked up a pen to write in this journal. Yet, this will also be the last time I do so.
All I wanted was to live a life where I could be me; I had no need for material possessions, money, nor dowry. And in all of my intercourse with society, there was nothing that made me feel as if I belonged to it. I never understood people very well, and they never seemed to understand me either.
I write to understand myself as much as to be understood, but who am I kidding? Who else is ever going to read these personal writings other than myself?
Even my own husband would not lend me some of his minutes to understand me.
Elliott had not much affection for his own mother and sisters, then who am I to think I will make an exception to this behavior? Every nerve in my body feared him. Our servants were seemingly blind on the subject: pretending they never saw him strike nor abuse me. No one wanted to offend the duke by taking my part against him.
But dear reader, I married him.
Oh my poor heart, only death could release me from a life-sentence of agony in his hands! And the only regret I will have in dying is that it is not for love.
In the next world, where there is no marriage, but where souls find each other through intimacy, may I attain true love.
What?
Instead of the familiar coal-tar ink, the bottom half of the page was covered in splatters of blood—the ink of death. Levi’s breath caught in his throat as he tried not to tear at the sight. He wanted to look away, needed to bring his eyes away, but he couldn’t.
Flipping the next pages, it was all the same: empty. He knew what that meant.
You had long been dead, but he felt it was as if you had just died in his arms that night. “You too? How the fuck have you managed to reach so far inside my heart?”
The love you shared with him was liquid, not literally of course: you reminded him that sometimes you were a friend, sometimes a teacher, and sometimes, even a soulmate. Levi used to laugh at the idea of soulmates—a supernatural concept not intended for mortals. But when you bridged the gap between life and death, perhaps soulmates weren’t a silly thing after all.
You found solace in this diary, and he found himself in your memories. You kissed the words unto his lips and skin, and his heart always heard and understood.
a like & reblog would be appreciated <3

Two gentle knocks on the wooden door.
Erwin was a busy man, his thick eyebrows bumped together in a scowl at the thought of another interruption during his work. “State your name and business.”
“Y/N. I am here to deliver your lunch, Sir.”
The irritation written on his face was washed away in an instant at the familiar voice. He tidied himself up for a few seconds before saying an enter, making sure not to sound as excited as he actually was.
Cruising into the man’s office, “Good afternoon Mr. Smith. You haven’t been showing up at the mess hall lately. So, I decided to bring you your lunch, again. Skipping meals isn’t healthy.” Setting down the tray on the side table, strands of hair fell to your face as you quickly tried to fix it.

Erwin didn’t miss the playful and seductive manner of how you tucked the hair behind your ear. He also didn’t miss the folded paper that came along with his meal on the tray, probably another pick-up line written on it. “Thank you for putting my well-being into consideration, Ms. Y/N.”

Giving him a wink, “Please, just call me Y/N.”
Confidence was attractive, sure, and you were quite the confident woman today. However, the commander also loved your shy side. A subtle, unnoticeable gleam of deviltry came to his eyes as he contemplated on his next words. “Is everything alright, why are you blinking like that?”
Heat rose to your cheeks, and the muscles in your face tightened. Mentally berating yourself, that was supposed to be a wink, Erwin.
Shifting your glance around the room to avoid eye contact, you decided to end the awkward interaction. “No, Sir. Everything is alright. I will… I will be taking my leave now. Enjoy your meal.”
-
Twenty-eight.
That was the number of times you tried making your advances. You didn’t know if he was dense, or was just playing dumb. But, in as much as you hated to admit it, you were quite convinced it was the latter.
Was it because he thought you were ugly? Was it because you always wore ragged and stained clothes? Or was it because you were just some cook working for the Scouts while he was a well-respected military commander? You didn’t know.
But did that matter anymore? No. Although there was a sense of fulfillment and pleasure in your desperate efforts to woo the man you loved, you were already growing tired.

Erwin is definitely someone worth waiting for—those deep sapphire eyes could make any woman in a 50-meter radius fall in love with him. Yet, it was time to finally acknowledge what his blatant disregard meant. If the man was indirectly telling you he wasn’t interested, then it meant he wasn't interested. End of story. You needed to chip away from his cold exterior.

“So… you giving up so soon? I thought you had more guts though. Seems like your god-awful attempts at wooing him didn’t pay off after all.” The raven-haired man sipped on the tea he ordered Eren to brew.
You frowned, “Levi, has anyone ever directly voiced how rude you are?”
“More than you can count.” Clicking his tongue, the captain was not enjoying the drink. He made a mental note to brew his own tea from then on as the beverage always tasted like shit when Eren did it.
Placing a hand on your hip, crooked like a tea cup handle, “Just to put it out there: I’ve done more than enough for him. Erwin is smart guy; If he doesn’t get the message—if he refuses to get the message, then I won’t force him to. A stitch in time saves nine! I don’t want to let these feelings grow if it only shatters me in the end.”

“He likes you, y’know?”
Raising your right eyebrow, the tone of your voice came out a little harsher than you had expected. “Didn’t you hear what I just sai-“
“Didn’t you hear what I said? I said he likes you, and of all people, I should know.” Levi gave another one of his infamous tongue clicks before he continued with his words. “Erwin, a man of intellect and grace. But it’s funny how I caught such a man fighting that little giggle escaping his lips when he read the stupid pick-up lines I told you to write.”

“What?”
The captain hit you lightly on the head. “Stupid brat, then why do you think he embroidered your name on the bottom hem of his green cloak instead of sewing it like a fucking normal person? He looked like a silly little school girl in love, amusing really.”
“What…?” Blinking twice, it was difficult for you to digest the short man’s words as you were already convinced you had ZERO chances with Erwin.
Hitting you on the head once more, “You are clueless as fuck.’’
-
The man had just finished a meeting with Nile, Pixis, and Zachary inside the premises of Wall Sina. It was just another meeting about fundings. Erwin had already anticipated the almost non-existent funding on his military regiment to be cut even more, especially knowing the royal capital’s negative sentiment towards the Scouting Legion. This would certainly pose a huge problem, but he didn’t argue against the decision of Zachary; he didn’t want to kick the hornet’s nest—not today at least.
Walking to his carriage, he felt something weird on his heel. Looking down, he noticed the sole of his shoe was flapping. Oh well, he’d have to get a new pair.
As his head was still looking down and inspecting the shoe flap, he noticed a little orange kitten curling itself up like a ball on the corner. His mind quickly went to the thought of you. Thanks to Levi, he learned that you had always loved cats, orange cats to be specific.
A lightbulb went over his head. The man walked towards the meowing kitten, “Come on little guy, hop on my arms, we’ve got a girl to make happy.”
No response, not that he was expecting the kitty to respond anyway. “I promise you, Y/N will make you as fat and lazy as you want. Come on then.”

The commander held the sentient bundle of orange fur in his hands as he entered the carriage. Petting the little cat, he began to reminisce on earlier today.
It was adorable to watch you and your little attempts to snatch his attention, only to turn into a deep red shade whenever he looked at you straight in the eye. Warmth found its way to his cheeks and heart at the memory of you getting easily flustered.
In as much as he wanted to reciprocate affection, a relationship within the military was often frowned upon.
That was when Erwin realized he was a fool. Who would the cadets report the issue of forbidden romance to? The commander?
The warmth he felt suddenly became a chill. It must have been difficult on your side. Of all people your heart could have chosen, you chose a man—or a foolish boy rather—who seemingly didn’t have enough room in his heart to love someone as sweet as you. But that wasn’t true!

He had to prove that wasn’t true.
Erwin Smith’s mouth tasted like copper as he swallowed it down to get the taste of shame out. Rubbing the cat’s forehead, he silently wished this little guy would (at least) slightly make up for the wicked game he had played on you.

-
The load of dishes never seemed to lessen. After cooking three times a day for hundreds of people in the Scouting Regiment, you were also expected to scrub the ceramics for hours on end? Letting out a sigh, this job doesn’t pay very well.

A familiar, monotonous voice was then heard.

“Oi, I know you’re busy, but the delivery of the new ODM gears are coming in soon; can you wait for it outside? I have to watch over Hange and Eren’s experiment.”

“You only ever speak nicely to me when you’re asking for a favor. Other than that, you call me brat 24/7.” you teased the short man.
Levi let out one of those rare smirks. The captain decided to keep quiet and let things naturally unravel themselves instead.
Being interrupted while doing your job was something you hated—in fact, it was something everyone hated. But Levi was a friend. Though you never admitted it, he was a good friend, and you knew he would do the same for you—perhaps more even.
And little did you know, Levi was already doing you a favor by his request for you to ‘wait for the delivery’.
As soon as you walked outside, you noticed a certain someone. There it was again—those familiar eyes that could charm just about anyone.
You gave the man a simple greeting, then quickly walked away. This was the first time you actively avoided him, mainly because you still weren’t decided on what you were supposed to feel, especially after what the short captain had revealed to you earlier that day.
Erwin predicted you’d react that way. Not that he blamed you for suddenly being distant, but his heart ached as it felt guilty for playing with your feelings.
The blond man had a silver tongue, he had a way with words that could pick your brain apart. He knew how the human mind works, and he could easily persuade even hundreds of soldiers to sacrifice their earthly lives. He’s a military commander for God’s sake.
Yet, even in the most rudimentary sense, Erwin Smith did not know what to say to the girl he liked.

But he’d already been a fool for too long. Well, here goes nothing. Abandoning any reservations, he calls your name out.
“Y/N, may I have a minute?” your name escaping his lips ever so gently.
The man approached you, got down on his right knee, and pulled what seemed to be a small bouquet out of his jacket.
“Y/N, let me apologize.” The cadets who were nearby started to make gossip. You were sure these rumors would spread like wildfire. Erwin didn’t mind it though.

“What? It’s oka-“

“No, I have been giving you the cold shoulder. I’m sorry. You don’t deserve any of that; you’re an amazing, beautiful young woman, and I’d be honored to be with you—that is, if you still want me.”
This was too much to process at the moment. The words failed to form on your lips as you were left dumbfounded. It didn’t help that you felt a few pairs of eyes piercing a hole through you. Nosy cadets.
A few heartbeats passed. There was an awkward silence as the tension grew thicker.
But not until a small, wobbly whine was heard—the sound resembled to that of a kitten’s meows, but you weren’t too sure. You also weren’t sure where the sound came from.
Erwin seemed to grab something from the hood of his green cloak. You cocked your head to the left in an attempt to satisfy the curiosity of what he was grabbing.
As soon as you made out what the orange ball of fur was, your tense body relaxed as all awkwardness was thrown out the window, easily forgotten. The commander handed the whining kitten to you in a gentle manner, and you appreciated how his hold gave it proper support rather than just grabbing it from its scruff.

“I saw him a while ago at Wall Sina, and I thought you would like it.”

“He’s adorable. But aren’t pets prohibited in the-“

“It’s alright, bending the rules a little for the girl I like wouldn’t hurt.” Erwin Smith gave you a subtle wink.
There was no hint of hesitance found in your next words. With a confident grin, “Is everything alright? Why are you blinking like that, commander?”

Both of you laughed.
However, before the blond man could reply with a witty comeback, humanity’s strongest suddenly made his presence known. “I don’t want to rain on your parade, lovebirds, but I need to borrow Erwin. Hange’s experiment has gone wrong.”

There was a daisy that came out bright and happy from the ground, it pushed through the Earth and sprang up, deciding to show the world its beauty. And luckily for the daisy, a man, whose eyes were deep and full of wonder, happened to pass by and appreciate it.
During his morning stroll, Erwin Smith stopped and gave a gentle smile to the plant. Today is going to be a lovely day. It was the first day of spring; the cold, icy spell that was cast upon Paradis was starting to thaw.
Apart from the unfurling flowers in this time of new life, the commander was happy, because it was finally that day of the week where he could hold down all his military obligations and just focus on his wife.
Sure, he was addicted to busying himself at work, being driven by a strong devotion to succeed. However, he was more addicted to your affectionate embrace, especially now that both of you were expecting a baby.
After a few heartbeats of just enjoying the little things in his fast-paced life, Erwin ambled down the street, continuing his Sunday morning routine. And part of that routine was buying you bread before you woke up.
The village bakery slowly appeared in the distance, sending out its heavenly fragrance. A striking sound of a bell rang as he entered the front door, only to be greeted by different types of bread and cake. There was sourdough bread, whole wheat, focaccia, Stromboli, egg tart, streusel pie, sponge cake… basically any baked treat!
The town’s most dexterous baker—covered in streaks of flour—made his presence known. “Erwin! Are you having the usual?”
“Good morning, Mr. Beaumont. Yes, a loaf of brioche please.”
"Say, I saw (Y/N) yesterday. She's showing more than she was a month ago. I guess she's expecting soon?"
The military official reached for his pocket and raised his hand to pay for the bread, “Yes. She’s at 36 weeks. I still can’t believe I’m going to be a father in a little while.”
Taking the treat in exchange for his money, he pivoted on his heel and took off to go home. The neighborhood was quiet, just Erwin and his shoes on the pavement. The silent morning twilight had a mysterious calming effect on him.
“Sweetheart, I’m home. I’ve got your favorite, brioche bread.”
A woman wilted on bed greeted him back in a languid manner. She looked as though she had just awoken from her slumber, “Mmhmm, hey there handsome.”
“How are you feeling?” The man approached his wife and caressed her obvious bump.
“A bit nauseous-“
“Just stay in bed and rest, let me make breakfast.” With a protective kiss placed on her crown, “I’ll cook six pancakes and eggs, sound good?”
“Six? Are we expecting someone?”
He smiled, giving a subtle wink. "Silly, you're eating for two, and I'm caring for two.”
The man left their bedroom and waltzed into the kitchen whilst tying an apron to himself, in order to prepare the pancake ingredients.
Six eggs were cracked, yolks and whites separated. While humming a tune he often heard from some of the cadets, he placed a large bowl onto the wooden table, combining flour, milk, salt, and egg yolks in it.
The sweet scent of warm milk wafting in the air awakened all of his senses. Lazily whisking the soft contents of the bowl created a relaxing feeling, something usually absent in the blond soldier due to the nature of his work.
A few minutes spent in solace ticked by, until a soft, feminine voice was heard, “Are you busy?” (Y/N) peeked from the corner of the kitchen doorway.
“Not when it comes to you, is something wrong?”
“I-I think my water broke... Erwin, the baby is coming.”
He’d already prepared for this moment months ago, yet the anxiety that came with surprise baby-delivery scenarios was just unavoidable.
Erwin hurriedly, yet ever-so-gently, brought his pregnant wife back to bed. Adrenaline coursed through his veins; he was ready to run THROUGH the walls just to ask for help as soon as he possibly could. His feet were moving faster than his mind was, as he went outside to call the neighbors.
“Mrs. Wagner! The baby is arriving.”
The next few moments came by in a blur. The next thing he knew was that he was back in their bedroom, shifting incessantly in his seat. He was holding his wife’s hand while three other women helped her deliver the baby.
“You’re doing great. Hang in there.” His heart was galloping with anxiety, joy, and eagerness.
He felt his whole body working, despite only sitting down and giving words of encouragement. His muscles were warm, chest rising and falling with rapid breaths. His mind was frantic with ‘what ifs’, that even a small fraction of those thoughts could cancel out all positive words he was literally uttering to the woman in labor.
Then, (Y/N)’s breathy and brittle voice was heard, “E-Erwin…?”
Nervously, he moistened his dry lips. “I’m here, I’m here. Keep going, sweetheart. You’re gonna be a great mother. I love you.” His smile was forced as he attempted to hide his concern
Because Erwin had to stay strong.
He had no idea what to do for a woman in labor—theoretically, he did. But now that he was in the actual situation, no, he didn’t.
Erwin knew CPR though, or ODM gear tricks, or how to apply a tourniquet on a wounded soldier. He also knew how to amputate arms and legs. Although the man never used some of these skills, he valued them in theory.
However, even in the most rudimentary sense, he physically did not know what to do for a woman in any stage of childbirth. All there was for him was to cheer on for his wife, and thank God his neighbors had kind hearts.
After what seemed like an eternity, a baby boy was finally born as a blessing to this wretched world. It reminded him of the daisy earlier today: beauty that sprung from such a cold, ugly soil.
Newborn cries filled the room, replacing all stress and worry. Erwin swallowed and blinked a few times, eyes turning glossy as the small bundle of joy—not bigger than a bag of sugar—was handed to him, wrapped up in a clean towel.
Two little eyes were peeking out, orbs as blue as burning brimstone. His hair, a crazy mess of blond waves that resembled the golden wheat of the fields. His son looked just like him.
The only difference was, this child was freshly sent from heaven; it was so pure and delicate, not knowing of a single thing yet. The man—now father—couldn’t believe how tiny new humans are, how vulnerably adorable.
“(Y/N), you did so well sweetheart! We’re… we’re finally parents.” He passed the little sentient life form into his lover’s arms, showing her their son.
“Hey there baby pumpkin, you look so much like your papa.”
“Oh yes, he’s got my looks, I bet a lot of ladies will be chasing after him when he’s older.”
Just like marriage, parenthood was not a thing to enter lightly. Yet, Erwin was still excited to embrace this solemn and mature commitment with every fiber of his being.

Eren put a fist over his heart, saluting the well-respected soldier standing before him. “Captain! The commander has been looking for you, he said you’ve missed this morning’s meeting.”
No response.
The young cadet was concerned, his superior officer had been significantly spacing out a lot these days. With a loud and harsh ‘ahem’, he managed to knock Levi out of his reverie.
“What is it, Yeager?”
“The commander is asking for the reason behind your absence at the meeting held earlier today. He wants you in his office as soon as possible, sir.”
Levi was too entangled in his own thoughts that he failed to take cognizance of his surroundings. He even forgot about his work-related plans with Erwin.
“Tch, tell Eyebrows I dealt with some brats who skipped training.” Not even a second after, the shorter man walked off, finding another spot to lose himself to his daydreams to.
Finding another spot to wait for your arrival.
Perhaps one of the sweetest things in the wretched world he lived in was falling in love. It was a natural process. No forcing of chemistry. Just raw feelings.
He doesn’t remember when it started, but it just happened all at once. It was unexpected and unhoped for. The only thing he was certain of was that he was falling hard for you, for the baker who visited on Wednesdays. Levi could only hope the feeling was mutual.
---
Sitting inside a carriage for three hours wasn’t exactly the ideal way of spending your morning.
Your consciousness was ebbing away from the rhythm of the tracks. The lids of your eyes were growing heavy as you lazily stared out the window. It was a long journey travelled from the bakery to the Survey Corps headquarters, all just to deliver bread.
However, a familiar face that slowly appeared from the distance snatched your interest, making you forget about how you were just being lulled into doziness a few moments ago.
You caught Levi looking at you, as to which he immediately looked away, feigning ignorance of your imminent arrival.
Once the carriage came to a halt, you excitedly got off to greet the short Ackerman.
“I saw you looking, were you waiting for me? I thought military captains had busy schedules, hmm?”
He scratched the non-existent itch on the back of his neck, giving his hands something to do to look less awkward. “Nosey brat, I wasn’t waiting for you. To be honest I didn’t even notice your arrival until I heard that annoying voice, tch. I was just-“
“You were just what?” Playing coy, you looked at him as innocent as possible, bringing your face closer to his until only an inch of a gap was left.
He lowered his head, cheeks glowing with a deep scarlet shade. “I-I was just making sure if, you know, i-if the cadets were u-uhm...” The man threaded his calloused hand through his hair. Shit. Deciding to just get it over with, he quickly mumbled in a nearly inaudible fashion. “I was just watching if the cadets were trying to skip training again.”
“Oh, were you really?”
With a dismissive wave of a hand to shove you off him, “Shut up, (Y/N). Let’s get back to business so you can leave the fuck already.”
Levi was adorable when flustered, you couldn't help but let out a giggle, “Okayyy then, I’ll just go fetch the bread in the carriage-“
Your slipping on the dirt was unexpected, like a thunderstorm on a sunny day, and just as harsh. As you fell, your hands clamored for non-existent handles.
There was a small but sharp pinch of pain that shot up your knee from the impact, like a needle jammed through your skin. It surely stung. Nonetheless, the sensation wasn’t anything you couldn’t handle.
Only, it was a different story for the man who witnessed you stumble down. His face scrunched up into a grimace, his look was as if half of your body had been bitten off by a titan. It truly was ironic how the soldier—who should be used to seeing blood—reacted so much to you getting a slight cut on the leg.
Levi immediately carried and sat you down on the bales of hay stacked by the corner of the horse stable. He momentarily ran off to inside the headquarters, only to come back carrying a medical kit in his hands.
You were patiently seated as the soldier fell on his left knee to tend to your wound. “Unbelievable. You’re lucky it was only a scratch on the leg. What if you hit your head? Or you landed on your back and broke your spine?”
“But it was just an accide-“
He kept scolding you, like that of a mother scolding her child. “It’s because of accidents that we need to be more cautious. You can’t be reckless, okay? You just can’t.”
And perfectly when the pain of your minor injury was at its worst, it instantly dissipated, like fog after sunrise. Maybe because even if only for a sliver of time, Levi’s usually intimidating aura vanished; it was replaced with an assuaging one.
Over the past few weeks, now did you only take the chance to closely study his face. The man’s lips looked soft and pillowy. His nose was pointy with a straight bridge and narrow nostrils. In a renewed silence, ironically, his dark eyes glowed.
All of a sudden, you released the breath you didn’t even know you were holding. An unfamiliar wave of nervousness came over you. Every muscle in your face was tense, wordlessly communicating your shyness.
Did you just develop a crush on Humanity's Strongest?
You knew Levi quickly picked up on the situation. A thin, smug grin flickered on his face, not even trying to hide his stark amusement.
Oh how the tables have turned.
Wanting to ease the building tension, but not knowing what to say, you sheepishly uttered, “Y-your hair looks really soft, can I touch it…?”
“What?”
You jerked your head in a different direction, shying away, “Nothing.”
“No, no. You were saying something.” The soldier lifted his shoulders in a half shrug.
“M-me? No I didn’t. You’re hearing things, Levi.”
A few heartbeats passed. It was awkward. You strained to hear something, anything, but you were only met with silence.
Then, Levi took in a sharp breath,
“You can touch it… only if you agree to have tea with me in my office.”

‎‎‎‎‎A gentle hush cloaked the land, as snowflakes fell down from heaven like glitter that gave the world a new shine. Boughs of trees were clothed with thick layers of fluffy snow.
The steel-gray skies above that oversaw Paradis resembled the eyes of the man who was hugging you in bed, providing warmth from the winter that froze everything with its icy breath.
“Levi, what are you doing?” His needy embrace was tight, it’s almost as if it was saying he never wanted to let you go in his arms.
“I’m serving as your blanket, brat. You wouldn’t want to go quivering to death, would you?”
You knew the man was just making excuses to envelope you in a soft bear hug, “I’m not even quivering. We already have a cozy blanket over us, and a hotly flaming furnace.”
“(Y/N), shut up and let me love you. You’re my pillow now.” The jet black strands of his hair were tickling you as Levi nestled his head against the crook of your neck.
“God, you’re unbelievable! It’s adorable how clingy you are right now, yet you can’t even give me a kiss during training.”
“Tch, I don’t want those nosey pests butting in my personal life, especially shitty-glasses. Besides, it’s extra cold tonight, it’s only right that we provide each other body heat.”
Your hands were lovingly stroking his hair, “If you’re so adamant on keeping me warm and snug, why don’t you make tea for me?”
“Maybe. But I would like to see you try make tea for me instead.” ㅤ
With a small nod, the both of you rushed out of bed. Despite it being midnight, you quickly headed to the kitchen on the first floor, in order to avoid being seen by anyone. Your relationship was a secret, and you both liked it that way.
Levi sat on top of the light-colored wooden table, while you poured hot water into a small teapot, adding green tea leaves. You slowly stirred the substances of the teapot in a hypnotic rotating movement, as to which the man only stared with interest.
After stirring, you closed the teakettle with a lid. “I believe we need to let the leaves rest for seven minutes before straining, then it’s ready to drink.”
The next few minutes of waiting were spent on a leisurely chat. He looked at you with raw emotion; you were the love that awakened his soul. Love itself was nothing more than a word, but between you and him, it was everything.
Realizing it was time, you went to open the drawer beside the table, grabbing a copper mesh strainer.
The lid was removed from the teapot, an earthy scent of tea-infused water blended in with the rising hot steam. You placed the strainer over his favorite cup, and poured the teakettle’s contents into it.
You set the cup down near the edge of the table Levi sat on. Nervously biting your lower lip, “Here you go. I hope it’s up to your standards, Mr. tea connoisseur.”
The captain took a sip from the beverage. Giving his famous tongue click, “It isn’t the best, but I’ve surely tasted worse.”
“I’ll take that as both a compliment and an insult.”
Levi put the cup down. His rough and calloused hands snaked its way to your waist. When he rested his head on your chest, you heard a muffled response in a playful tone, “I guess that leaves me no choice but to teach you how to brew tea properly, right cadet (Y/N)?”
“Oh so we’re playing cadet and captain now, huh? I’d have to report you for your inappropriate behavior, you’re not supposed to hold a cadet like this.”
The man stood up, scooping you in his arms and carrying you bridal style. “Hold you like what? Like this? You’re not just a cadet, you’re my cadet.”
Allowing yourself a smirk, you gazed into his deep eyes. You noticed his typically harsh look had softened. “I’ll make sure the higher ups will hear of your behavior, Mr. Ackerman!” ㅤㅤ
Both of you giggled.
---
Sasha, Connie, and Jean were walking down the halls, trying to steal food at this time of the night. Coming to a halt, they turned their attention towards the source of muffled voices.
“You hear that?” Connie questioned his friends, while running a hand through his non-existent hair.
The brunette hunter replied, “I thought I was hearing things.” ㅤ
Jean looked at them for a few moments. He heard it too. “It’s coming from the kitchen.”
Silently pushing open the heavy kitchen door on their left, they sneakily poked their heads out the small gap of the doorway. They were sent to a state of shock at what their eyes were witnessing.
“(Y/N) and the captain?!”
“So humanity’s strongest can also be soft, huh.”
“I always thought he was a virgi-“
Before they knew it, a certain bespectacled scientist joined them.
“Who’s not a virgin?” Hange took a moment to look at what the trio were curiously watching, only to be shocked at the sight as well. However, as the scientist leaned in to get a better view, the rusty iron hinges of the door loudly creaked, making their presence known to the couple.
Levi turned his head towards the creaking noise, while gently putting you down. Furrowing his eyebrows, he muttered, “What in the hell-“
“Captain, we can explain!” The raven-haired soldier had only spoken four words, yet the three young cadets were already on their knees, asking for forgiveness.
Hange couldn’t hide the amusement on their face, a cunning look came into their eyes. “Oh hohoho, so shorty has finally found love! Tell me (Y/N), is it big?”
Heat rose to your cheeks out of embarrassment from the straightforward question thrown at you. “Hange, it isn’t what it looks like, we’re not togeth-“
However, before you could even finish speaking, you were cut mid-sentence by Levi.
“Yes, we’re dating. And yes… it’s also big. Satisfied? Now take your ass off somewhere else, shitty-glasses. Don’t forget to take those nosey brats with you.” The words came out of Levi’s mouth in a hurried but clear fashion. It didn’t take a genius to figure out he was pissed off.
“What’s big and what is all this commotion?” Another uninvited guest makes their way to the scene. Erwin was going to take a midnight dump, until he heard bickering from the kitchen and decided to see what was happening.
“Erwin, great timing as always! We’re talking about shorty’s little ding-a-ling. I mean, big ding-a-ling!“
The commander was confused. Why were three cadets kneeling on the ground? Why was Hange talking about Levi’s sex. Moreover, what were the rambunctious group doing here in the middle of the night?
Despite his obvious confusion, the blond man couldn’t help but let out a chuckle when Hange's words registered in his mind. “So I assume that’s where all his height went?”
“Oh my God. Can we please stop talking about my boyfriend’s size?”
Sasha, Connie, and Jean were convinced their presence was forgotten, as their commanding officers continued to squabble over an odd topic. They couldn’t wait to get dismissed to their personal quarters. This would definitely make an interesting story to tell the rest of the 104th cadets.

Erwin and his kids trying to get his workaholic wife out of her desk

Summary: Life as an aircraft maintenance engineer leaves (Y/N) no time for her family. Erwin and the kids plan a special surprise for her.

The constant, spontaneous changes in life make no sense. And the more we grow older, the lesser sense it'll make. It’s a fast-paced world we live in, change is a natural flow of life. Everything will soon turn into a photograph framed on the wall, or memories played in the back of our minds.
Erwin misses the 2am kitchen dances, the long sleepless nights talking about love, the Sunday family picnics.
Suddenly, all those became distant memories.
For him, you were his heaven on Earth. When he kisses your lips, he could taste the next fifty years of life together. But the only thing stopping you from spending it hand in hand was your work.
You were an aircraft maintenance engineer who often worked long hours to ensure safety across the assigned aircrafts. A lot of mechanical issues arise in such an unpredictable environment, so you work under constant pressure; paying close attention to the surroundings while regularly communicating with the maintenance staff for things to run safely and smoothly.
With the amount of workload you handle on a daily basis, naturally you would come home worn out and completely exhausted. There was no spare time for family. Work shifts also included weekends in order to cover flying hours.
“But you’re late anyway, another five minutes to finish your breakfast won’t make any difference.” Erwin was concerned about your health, you haven’t been eating properly these past few days.
Hastily putting your black shoes on, you replied with a hurried and unclear mumble, “The Government Air Division called in for an emergency preflight inspection, I can’t afford another five minutes when I’m already running late.”
“Alright then, text me during lunch break. No, call me instead, so I’ll know you’re actually eating, and not busying yourself with paperwork. I love you.”
“I love you too,” With that, you take your leave.
Your husband was plainly staring at the front door that just shut in front of him. His pink apron had patches of flour from preparing pancakes for your breakfast, which was left untouched. Erwin is a calm and collected man by nature, but your negligence for family was testing his patience. He needed to think of a plan to spend time with you quick.
“Did mommy leave already?” The voice of a little girl in pajamas snapped the man away from his thoughts. She was holding a stitched-up potato stuffed toy in her arms while coming down the staircase and walking into the living room.
He crouched down to meet her eye-to-eye, “Yes little sweetheart, she just left. Listen Sasha, go wake your little sister up so we can have breakfast. I made pancakes, sound good?”
“Okay!” She kissed her father on his right cheek and ran off to wake Historia up.
---
Your entire day was spent on installing electrical circuits, testing communication equipment, and replacing aircraft oxygen system components. By the time you arrived home, you decided to skip dinner and finish the report of today’s events at work.
Placing the laptop on top of your desk, you sighed. You missed your family. Sasha was in second grade already, and you haven’t had the free time to catch up on her about school. When Historia’s first tooth fell out, you weren’t there to tell her about tooth fairies. While Erwin had mentioned several times that he wanted to adopt a puppy, you kept putting your conversation about it off.
In as much as you wanted to bond with them, you knew you couldn't afford losing your job. However, the kids were going to grow up without a mother by their side.
Perhaps you confused having a career with having a life. You spent most of your time focusing on what’s urgent, and not enough time on what’s actually important.
Forgetting the report you were working on, your mind kept wandering off to different places, ruminating about your personal life. Until exhaustion finally kicked in, and unconsciousness took over.
---
You felt a series of slow, lazy kisses trailing on your jaw and down your neck; the warm feeling of breath was tickling you. Opening your eyes, you welcomed the golden rays of sunrise, along with Erwin's eyes that were as blue as burning brimstone. And in the moment, maybe just by a sliver of time, every color seemed to look the smallest bit brighter.
“Rise and shine, angel." He sat on the bed next to you, gently and lovingly caressing your cheeks.
"Good morning. How did I end up on bed?"
"I carried you, I hope you don't mind, but I saved the document you were working on."
You gave him a small nod of approval. As you glanced to the right, you read the time displayed on the clock. It was nine in the morning, meaning you were an hour late for work.
“Why didn’t you wake me up earlier?!”
He ran a hand through his blond hair, “There’s no need to.”
“Huh?”
“I called your work and requested for a day off, which they were happy to give you one. Your boss even made a remark of how hard you were working lately.”
Before you could even answer, the bedroom door opened, revealing two little girls in pajamas. The younger one was holding a tray of food, while the other was holding a pitcher of orange juice.
“H-hi I’m Historia and… what do I say again?” The blond girl turned to her sister for help.
Sasha whisper shouted to her younger sister, “Server, you’re supposed to say server!”
“Oh, right! I'm Historia a-and I’m your server this morning, mommy!”
Your husband leaned in, nuzzling his lips against the crook of your neck, giving you small kisses as he was trying to contain his laughter from your daughters’ cuteness.
“And I’m Sasha, I’m also your sever this morning!”
You laughed; your children were too adorable. “Oh really? Thank you my little pumpkins. Did you cook the food too?”
“Yes, b-but daddy did most the work. I cracked the eggs though!” Historia proudly said.
“Listen, why don’t you get your mother a spoon and fork so she can taste the meal we’ve prepared for her, hmm?” Erwin commanded the girls to fetch the silverware from the kitchen so he could have a moment with his wife.
“Roger!”
After Sasha and Historia closed the door, he laid down by your side and pulled you closer to him. Placing his forehead on yours, “Do you like the little surprise? We’ve never tried breakfast in bed before, so I thought it would be a good idea.”
You shut your eyes, just enjoying the tranquility of your husband’s embrace. Your shared hug had woven your souls in a way that was a forever bond between two lovers. “Mmm, I love it. Thank you.”
“Don’t worry, let us take care of you, sweetheart.”
“I’m really impressed by all this, the girls are so big now.”
After a few moments of silence, the man mumbled, “So… when are we making baby number 3?”
Opening your eyes at his words, Erwin had a sly, toothed grin plastered on his face.
“Tonight.”

Summary: On a date, you made Erwin realize he cannot open his heart to someone else until he is at peace with himself. Finally, self-love was what set him free.

Joint request with:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
People say that you either die a hero, or you slowly watch yourself become a villain.
Erwin Smith chose the latter.
Being a villain for his own sake was more fulfilling than being a hero for everybody else’s. He led his men right into their deaths, driven by a greed to succeed. And now that he reached the basement, what was he supposed to do now?
Accomplishment didn’t erase the guilt that was eating him up. At this point, he doesn’t even consider himself a person—just a lump of guilt and sadness.
After retaking Wall Maria, Erwin decided it was finally time to retire and leave the Scouts in Hange’s command. All he ever wanted was to give meaning to his father’s death. And because he was too focused on his goal, he never had the time to give meaning to his own life.
He bought a little cottage with a nice garden in the quieter areas of Wall Rose. It’s been about 2 months since his retirement, and all he managed to do within that period was sulk over his empty achievement. Fortunately for him, the little kitten he adopted gave him a sense of warmth, something he had been yearning for so long.
During his service in the military, perhaps he had neglected his heart. Of course, he has fallen in love before, many times in fact, and it was always with you. You spent nights together, chatted leisurely during break time, flirted in the halls. However, Erwin never took the risk of seriously pursuing you.
Mainly because he felt unworthy. He didn’t deserve a soldier like you who dedicated their heart for his selfish dream. He didn’t deserve a good-natured woman like you whose smile spoke of a sweet soul. Maybe there are just some people that we only learn to love from a distance.
No.
Only fools live to regret their words, but he has regretted his silence long enough.
In the end, we only regret choices we didn’t take.
---
While in the kitchen, Erwin took the time to prepare a meal, for the benefit of his date. He asked you out on a picnic that was set for later in the afternoon. How you even agreed to go with him was beyond his understanding, however, he was grateful to be given a chance at love.
Realizing his cupboards were almost empty, the man decided to head for the market.
The deafening chaos in the market made his ears split. Vendors yelled prices and stubborn housewives angrily argued with the annoyed shopkeepers. The air smelled of sweat and fish. No air freshener could have defeated this sour, rancid stink which ruled over the cramped air.
People were packed like sardines, as Erwin elbowed his way through to the vendor which he frequently bought fish at.
“Erwin, what can I get you?”
“Just 500 grams of salmon, please.”
“As you wish. You’re glowing today more so than usual, any ladies yet?” The vendor had a sly look on his face, as to which the blond man only chuckled.
“Yeah. She’s a real beauty. I’m a bit nervous actually, I’m taking her for a picnic later. Hence, the fish.”
“You? The well-respected commander? Nervous? You’re popular among women, so don’t sweat it. Just don’t forget to put my seat in the front row of your wedding, ya?”
Paying for the salmon, the veteran bid the vendor goodbye. Grabbing fruits on the way home, he laid all his ingredients out on the kitchen table. Some of the ingredients were freshly picked from his garden, he mentally thanked Moblit for helping him plant the herbs.
Luckily, the elderly couple next door was friendly enough to teach him basic culinary skills. Twenty years in the military unfortunately didn’t grant him spare time to learn how to cook. He thought of offering them a gift in exchange for their act of kindness.
After long hours of preparation for the picnic date, the man was finally done. The buttered salmon, sliced fruits, cheese platter, and bottle of white wine were all neatly placed inside a wooden basket, completed with silverware and a table cloth. As that was finished, all Erwin needed was to dress up and he was good to go.
He picked you up at your place. After 5 gentle knocks, you greeted him at the door and the both of you made your way to the seaside.
Is there anything more blissful than a stroll on the beach? The water was as blue as jewels and as clear as the purest glass. Off in the distance, the sun began to set in a sleepy unhurried fashion. Seagulls spread their wings and soared into the vast never-ending sky.
The blond man put the basket down and set the picnic, bringing the food out as its delicious aroma travelled its way up to your nose.
“You didn’t have to put so much effort into this.” You were flattered by Erwin’s romantic set-up.
“It’s a small price to pay to love and be loved a little more.” He let out a little chuckle.
“What’s so funny?”
“Oh nothing, I just can’t help but think that God is smiling at us right now thinking ’I didn’t originally plan this, but here you go’.”
“Maybe. I only ever read these moments in books. But here I am, in a lovely picnic with a man on the sand beside the sea. I didn’t know God was such a cliché writer.”
The both of you sat down on the cloth, and started to eat. You took the silver spoon and pricked the potato’s firm and fluffy mound, bringing it to your mouth to bite. It was creamy with a subtle hint of saltiness. Using the fork, you pierced the asparagus with dripping sauce. The green vegetable was hot, melting in the white sauce that contrasted the pink salmon. The succulent meat was gleaming with a coating of rich butter; the aroma of lemon and garlic blending in the steam rising from your plate. Holding the stem of the glass, you swirled the white wine and sipped. It gave balance in combination with the meal, enhancing flavors and reducing the fishy taste of the seafood.
“I can’t admit this tastes better than my own cooking, that would hurt my pride.”
The former commander runs a hand through his blond hair, “That leaves me no choice but to practice and cook for you more.”
Both of you laughed.
After the meal, you stood up and sprung into the waves, your head up and your mouth wide in a smile. You haven’t been this carefree in so long. Taking a deep breath, Erwin launched himself over the waves to run after you. Sea foam sprayed around him and the water filled the space between his skin and clothes. He sauntered along the hard, wet sand with his jeans rolled to his shins, the cold waves coming up over his toes and ankles.
You framed a smile, the brave and inspiring commander you once knew seemed so vulnerable, so human. He looked like a golden retriever playing in the rain for the first time. Your heart softened at the sight.
He walked up to you a few moments later, taking you in his arms silently, while the toes in your feet were gently being washed by the tide. No words were exchanged, just a solemn embrace followed by swaying of hips, dancing to the music of the ocean.
“Hate to break the silence of the moment since everything is so perfect right now. But the only thing I hate is the fact that you are way taller than me.”
“Maybe. But there’s an advantage to it, (Y/N).”
“What?”
The blond man giggled, tightening his hold on your waist. “Because when I pull you into a hug, you can listen to my heart which only beats for you.”
The rest of the evening was spent quietly slow dancing by the edge of the sand, enjoying the tranquility of Mother Nature’s work. Sometimes people need to appreciate silence in a world that never stops talking.
For the longest time, Erwin believed it was him against the world. In reality, it was just him against himself. But not ‘til he found you, which made him realize he cannot open his heart to someone else until he is at peace with his own self. Finally, self-love was what set him free.

Being devoid of any emotion is more harmful than it is helpful. It’s better to love and get hurt than to never experience love at all. Love gives life. A garden without the warmth of the sun is a garden of dead flowers.
Levi doesn’t remember the last time he’s been in love. He doesn’t even know if he’s ever been in love. Not that he actually wants to experience romance, he thinks it’s cheap drama.
People see him as a cold-hearted grumpy man. Well, he surely was grumpy, but he was also only another human who had emotions; it was just buried deep down inside him that he nearly forgot he still had it.
Most of the student body—and some of the faculty—were terrified of Maria High School’s infamous janitor, Levi “Mr. Clean” Ackerman. Mainly because rumors about him claimed he was once a notorious thug widely-known for his expert street fighting abilities. The rumors weren’t wrong though.
However, everyone comes with a heavy emotional baggage, it’s just a matter of finding someone who’s willing to unpack with you. And it was her. It was her who barged in Levi’s heart without even knocking on the walls that guarded it.
As the sun dipped below the horizon to fall asleep, the fleeting colors of dusk began to fade away. Another school day has come to an end. By this time, Levi was sure everyone else had headed home, and it was time for him to do so as well. The raven-haired man gathered his personal belongings after he had just finished mopping the floor on the third story of the building.
He was walking down the stairs with his backpack hanging off his left shoulder, humming a tune he heard from a TV commercial. Momentarily stopping to a halt, he heard the singing voice of a woman. It was coming from the arts classroom.
Earlier today, the grumpy janitor did remember overhearing a conversation among the students. They were talking about the new art teacher who just started working here three days ago. They were also making a few inappropriate comments about the said teacher, so he naturally assumed the subject of their nasty remarks was a woman.
Ripping away from his thoughts, Levi decided to inform her of the school’s rule regarding staying late within the campus premises. He headed for the open door of the arts room, only for his eyes to lit up with adoration.
She was more beautiful than the easing sound of her voice. Her face to his eyes was all the beauty a woman can possess, not only for her features, but for the twinkle in her eyes that reflected her kind soul.
Her crow's feet spoke of a happy life, and the deep creases in her cheeks told of a girl who gave away smiles like they were gifts. “Oh hi, may I help you with something, sir?”
There was a knot in the grey-eyed man’s throat which seemed impossible to swallow. He was blown away by her beauty that he only managed to stutter a pathetic reply. “N-no. It’s past 6, all students and staff should be home by now.”
“Silly me. I was actually just about to head out, it took quite a while to clean up. The students made a mess.”
That was new. Most would leave the job of cleaning up to him, not even bothering to pick up after themselves. Even his own best friend, science teacher Hanji Zoe, would leave the laboratory looking like a warzone.
Levi was well-aware that he instantly liked this new art teacher. He had only met her a minute ago, but he couldn’t let this opportunity slip through his fingers. He had to shoot his shot. He wanted more of her sweet voice, beautiful face, and considerate behavior. The man didn’t even think about the next words that came out of his mouth before muttering them.
“It’s getting late, let me walk you to the bus stop. Unless you have a car or someone to pick you up.”
“This girl can take care of herself; however, I’ll take your offer. Walking at night alone can be scary for a lady.” A few moments of silence ensued before the woman continued. “How rude of me, I’m Ms. (L/N), but I’d prefer you call me (Y/N).”
“Levi. Levi Ackerman.” His heart was thumping. Never did he imagine he’d feel this much romantic excitement over a woman he just met a few minutes ago.
The walk to the bus stop was spent in talking about how rowdy the students were. (Y/N) shared her experience with two boys bickering back and forth during class, namely Jean and Eren. Levi snorted upon hearing the names of the students, may God have mercy on the art teacher who would be handling those two kids on a regular basis.
“Thanks for walking me, Levi. Get home safely, okay? Bye!” Before he could respond, the bus door closed and drove away.
Levi couldn’t sleep that night. He was wide awake, replaying the events of earlier. His ears remember the sound of her voice. It pierced the soreness within him, echoing in the walls of his mind, and touching the face of his soul. Just the thought of her left him uptight, anxious, and breathless. He was in love.
Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, you unexpectedly meet someone who tells you something new about yourself. Levi never knew this side of his. He felt confused, excited, and vulnerable. Moreover, he felt happy.
Weeks passed by quickly, and Valentine’s Day finally arrived. Typically, the grumpy janitor wouldn’t look forward to such a celebration. But this year was different, he had a date after school.
Erwin and Hange couldn’t shake off the shock that lingered in their beings. Did their ears catch the right words? The cold-hearted Levi Ackerman, caught up in the strings of love?
Miche ruffled the short man’s hair, “So it’s the art teacher? Not bad. Not bad at all. She’s a 10/10.”
“She is attractive. I would have asked her out if you didn’t beat me to it first.” The bespectacled brunette teased, much to Levi’s annoyance,
This definitely was interesting. After years of knowing the ex-thug, Erwin couldn’t help but let his curiosity take over. “How long have you guys been seeing each other?”
“Three weeks. Took her out on a date four times now. Will be taking her out again later. We don’t eat lunch jointly in the cafeteria though, that’s why you don’t see us together. Tch, pesky brats always bother her to eat lunch with them. A students’ favorite.”
Miche was quick to retort, “No shit Sherlock, students do love her. The both of you are polar opposites.”
It was true. Levi was a man with a threatening aura. Although school girls would gossip about hot he is, they never came up to him to strike a conversation out of fright.
On the other hand, (Y/N) was a living Aphrodite. Her beauty and tenderhearted nature attract people towards her.
She was an artist and a teacher who had a unique ability to inspire children. To help them convey their feelings through endearing art that everyone would enjoy. To teach creativity and innovation.
Dismissal came, classes were over for the day. The ebony-haired man made his way to his lover’s classroom, only for it to be filled with students. Some were handing (Y/N) letters, others gave her chocolates and flowers, while a student was singing for her with a small guitar.
The artist's eyes sparkled with excitement upon the sight of her Valentine's date. She quickly shot up from her seat and ran past her students. "Levi!" Hugging him tightly in her arms.
The students dealt with a shock to their system. The janitor and their art teacher, dating?
"Levi, I've got something for you." (Y/N) grabbed for an envelope in her pocket. The woman continued, "I'd rather you open the letter once you arrive home, I'd be embarrassed if you read it now."
His first Valentine's gift? Call him foolish, but Levi's heart swelled with tenderness at the small and simple gesture. No one ever bothered to look beyond his cold exterior, except her.
She accepted who he was, and found joy in him. She accepted his soul entirely, not wishing he was otherwise. She gave him a part of her heart that she never wished to reclaim. She loved him very dearly.
He didn't know what came over him, but the short man couldn't hold his tears back. It was an awkward situation for the teacher, him, and the students.
Until a certain baldie, who goes by the name Connie, decided to break the tension in the room. "That explains the hickeys on Mr. Clean's neck. I always thought it was Mr. Smith who put them there."
"Don't push your luck bratty baldass. I'm in a good mood, otherwise I wouldn't hesitate to hit you with a mop."
Valentine’s Day went on. After school, the couple headed for the amusement park. It was no surprise that the venue was crowded, considering it was a holiday. Usually, Levi would make a remark about how shitty young lovers scattered the area. But now, he was one of them.
(Y/N) suggested they ride a roller coaster, which they did. The line took about a solid 30 minutes, yet the raven-haired man didn't mind. As long as he got to spend time with her, he felt like he was on top of the world.
They walked slowly over to the cart and occupied the front row. As one of the workers fastened them to their seats, their hearts were beating fast. This was the scariest ride in the park.
The ride slowly takes off and starts to incline. The couple’s ears were hypnotized by the clicking of the gears while they watched themselves climb higher and higher. Blood starts rushing, the adrenaline causing their bodies to tense as the cart begins to dramatically drop.
Strong wind pushed their heads against the rubber black seat. Levi could feel every sharp turn and twist because his head would also sway along. He was scared, but at the same time loved the feeling. This was the man's first major roller coaster ride, and now all he wanted to do is go on more amazing roller coasters.
In the middle of his enjoyment, something came up. Not expecting his fake tooth to fall out, the janitor shut his mouth. Shit. Out of all the occasions that it could happen, it just had to be during his date. He'd have to set an appointment with his dentist soon.
Levi wasn't sure how (Y/N) would react. Sure, he told her about his past, but he never mentioned anything about his fake tooth. This was all to blame to the years he spent street fighting. It also came along with a few permanent scars on his body.
Meanwhile, the woman was screaming her lungs out. She could see the entire park from their point of view, the people were as little as ants. Unbeknownst to her, her date was dealing with a plague of insecurity and self-doubt.
"Want to know something funny? I think my front tooth just fell out." Levi tested the waters. It took everything in him to confess about one of his biggest insecurities.
"What?! Your tooth fell out?" The woman looked his way to confirm what she just heard.
Hesitantly displaying a wide grin for her to see the gap, "Yeah, it fell out when we passed by the loop-the-loop."
(Y/N) burst out in an unfeminine and boisterous laughter, uncontrollable tears escaping her eyes. She could barely breathe from all the non-stop giggling, and the gust of wind blowing through her face didn't help. Neither did the constant ups and downs of the roller coaster ride.
Levi just wanted to unbuckle his seatbelt and jump out of the cart. He wished he'd never told her; embarrassment was consuming him to its dark pit. His cheeks were burning and his palms were sweaty in anticipation for her verbal reply.
However, the next few words were something he didn’t expect to hear.
"Want to know something funnier Levi?" With that, the teacher took her fake tooth off and threw it out in the open, "I also have a fake tooth, got ‘em while riding a bike and hit the curb."
The grey-eyed man’s disbelief made him look so vulnerable. Instead of cackling at their odd coincidence, he felt a pleasant twist in his gut. She didn’t think less of him. Not only did she accept his flaws, but she even took the liberty of taking her tooth off to make him feel better about himself.
Maybe love wasn’t such a bad idea. It’s a blessed thing to fall in love and feel it in return. It’s like feeling the warmth of the sun from both sides.
She was a different type of person. His different type of person. The different type he would always search for in everyone.

A/N: I got the fake tooth part from a tiktok, and thought it was funny and sweet. Can't find the video though, so I couldn't put the link here.

Protective Dads
[ Eren x Fem!Reader ]
[ Fluff - Canonverse ]
Summary: Eren is left under the intimidating gazes of both his commanding officers, Erwin and Levi, as they discover he’s secretly been dating someone very dear to them.
Content Warning: none
Word Count: 2k
A/N: writing platonic Erwin & Levi was difficult because I’m an Eruri.
Tumblr media
Love, of any form, isn’t something you search for; it’s something that finds you and lights your way up through darkness.
Somewhere in a deserted village in Wall Rose stood an old, old house. It was a century old. As old as the godly walls that protected humanity from the titans. Plants would grow out of the floor and walls; the hinges of the door were also creaking from rust. No one could get across the rooms without stepping on shattered glass. But inside the decrepit and dilapidated house was where you lived, a confused little girl, crying from loneliness.

The Royal Government cut their funding on the Survey Corps, which led the scouts to use the abandoned castle in Wall Rose as their temporary headquarters. On their way there, they heard weeping. They didn’t take it as a threat; the voice belonged to a child, a little girl specifically.

Commander Erwin Smith came to a halt, which was a cue for his men to stop behind him. Levi came right after the blond as he unmounted his horse and followed the pitiful pleas of the child. They arrived at the old house and entered—only to see a girl, no older than 5, shedding tears.

Erwin was quick to respond, he cradled the young child in his arms only for his heart to sink when the girl flinched at his touch. “It’s okay, I’m not going to hurt you. Where are your parents?”
“I-I don’t k-know!” You responded to the strange man out of fear that he would hurt you like your parents did.
“There there little sweetheart, you’re going to be alright. We won’t let anything hurt you.”
You had nothing to lose, so might as well take the risk and trust the men who offered you safety.
And they stayed true to their promise. In the past decade, Levi and Erwin treated you like a princess. They always gave you time of day. They made you feel loved.
“Levi, finish this part of the paperwork for me.” The commander was tired, he couldn’t finish all the documents that piled on his desk.
Paperwork that dealt with the deaths of his comrades always stressed Levi out, but he knew he had to help Erwin with it. “Tch, after I bid (Y/N) good night.”
“Tell her I said good night too.” With that, Levi exits the office of his commanding officer. This was his routine, kiss his daughter good night. Technically, he wasn’t your father, but he loved you as much as any parent would to their child. He may not show affection as much as Erwin does, but he is willing to walk on fire just for your assured happiness.
Five loud knocks, no response. Normally he would wait for you to open the door for him. He learned to be patient than randomly storming in ever since he accidentally walked in on you changing. But after minutes of waiting, the man decided to let himself in, out of worry that you might be in trouble.
No one was inside, the room was empty.
It was late, quarter to eleven. Where could she be? Did she sneak out? Did someone take her? Was she just in the bathroom? His body moved faster than his mind did. Levi immediately headed for Mikasa’s quarters, hoping his young lady was there.
He slammed on the cadet’s door with force almost enough to break it. “Oi gloomy brat, open this damn door quick.”
Mikasa sighed, she was having a good night’s sleep. Reluctantly getting out of bed and heading for the door, she responded, “Captai-“
“Where’s (Y/N)?”
“Didn’t you know? She went out with Eren.”
“Eren?” That was when it all registered. Lately you would dress up just for ‘no reason’. You would ask his opinion on love. You would look for excuses to skip training and watch the titan shifter’s experiments.
“At this shitty time of the night!? Where did the titan freak take her?”
Mikasa was annoyed by Levi’s little nickname for Eren. “I don’t know, neither does Armin if you’re considering to question him too.”
The short captain was beyond pissed; he didn’t even take the time to thank the young cadet as he headed back to Erwin.
“We’ve got a situation. (Y/N) and Eren sneaked out to go to some shitty date. Apparently, they’ve been dating in secret. Should I send Squad Miche for a lookout?”
The blond man had figured out his daughter’s secret love not too long ago, however, he didn’t want to jump into conclusions without concrete evidence. “Leave them be.”
“Is your head up your ass? She could be hurt-“
“She’s a smart girl. She should know what’s right and wrong by now.”
Levi could only stare at his friend. He didn’t want to admit it, but Erwin was right. His heart was heavy knowing that ypu were now a woman, he needed to let you go.
Meanwhile, on the highroads in the forest, there stood a tall but lonely treehouse, where Eren and you were. And to look across the forest of trees was a pleasing sight. Puffy clouds latched to the never-ending sky. Stars glowed like beacons for the lost souls of this world. The pale moon was like a disc that dipped in the skyline.
“Eren, this is beautiful.”
“But not as beautiful as you are.”
“Sweet, but even my dead grandma could come up with a better quip.” The both of you laughed.
“Why’d you take me here anyway?”
“I just wanted to spend time with you without the risk of someone seeing us flirting in the hallway.”
“The risk of us getting caught not sleeping in our personal quarters is higher though.”
“(Y/N), you know what I mean. Life in the scouts is overwhelming, sometimes I just want to get away for a while, look at the silent night and lose myself with you. Where we could throw wishes into the sky and wait for the stars to catch them.”
That was sweet. You adored the brunet. He made your heart happy. His sweet almond-shaped emerald eyes were the windows to his kind soul; you could find his love for you in it.
Everyone paints him with negative words such as hot-headed, suicidal, and insane. But to you, he was perfectly imperfect, and you didn’t care about what other people had to say.
Eren kept blabbering about the stars, trying to distract himself, because in reality, he just wanted to kiss you. However, he kept putting if off because he was scared of how you’d react.
It didn’t take a genius to figure out the boy’s motive. Contemplating on what to do, you took a leap of faith.
His heart beat faster and faster as your face came up to his own and you pressed your mouth over his. His lips were soft, almost silken, and pillowy against your own. You could feel the soft tickle of his breath beneath your nose, fingers brushing through his short brown hair as you breathed each other in.
He felt all the love flood through your kiss as he saw your pure glistening eyes; the way you looked at him made him feel like the most important man alive.
The kiss was short-lived, but was one of the best moments of your life.
“We should probably head home. I don’t want my dads to find out I’m missing.”
Walking back to the headquarters was enjoyed in peaceful silence. The beauty of the majestic trees that towered you comforted your hearts. Twigs were crunching under your feet. It was spirit-refreshing to smell the mulchy mix of the forest’s perfume.
“The commander and captain Levi scare me. What if they don’t like me as your boyfriend-“
Right before Eren could turn the knob, the main door of the Scouting Legion headquarters opened with an abrupt force.
“I already don’t like you brat.”
“Hi Captain Levi.” This was one of your habits. You would call the short captain ‘Dad’, but sometimes you would switch to ‘Captain Levi’ because you weren’t really sure how to address him. The same happens with Erwin as well. They didn’t mind it though. However, given the situation unwrapping before you, you thought it was a better idea to keep it formal.
“Where have you been?” Your other father makes his presence known and walks toward you. His deep blue eyes were piercing through your soul.
It took you a few seconds to form a pathetic reply, only to be cut off mid-sentence, ”Eren and I were just-“
“We’re not talking to you, young lady.” Erwin’s dominance filled the area, the palpable tension between you was so suffocatingly thick.
The titan-boy took it as his cue to speak. “I just brought (Y/N) out to watch the night sky, sir.”
Eren was left under the intense gaze of both his commanding officers. If looks could kill—it was such a nasty glare that was casted upon him. Then, the blond man shifted his stare to your little figure, he looked anything but impressed with his daughter.
“Interesting. And then what? You defiled her? Tch, teen boys like you think with the wrong head.” Eren was taken aback by Levi’s accusation.
“Captain, I would never.”
The tallest of the men decided to lead the conversation. “Starting tonight I wouldn’t want to see the both of you together.”
“But-“
“I didn’t ask for your opinion (Y/N). Go back to your room cadet Jaeger, and get some actual sleep. Hange will be taking you for another experiment tomorrow. As for you young lady, we’ll be escorting you to your room to ensure you don’t sneak off with some boy again.”
The following days sluggishly dragged on. Your high cheekbones were sunken. Your eyes had dark circles staring out with sadness, the usually bright orbs were terrifyingly dim. Rumors about the incident started to spread like wildfire, and Eren was actively avoiding you. There was a sense of being past everything, being past everyone.
It wasn’t fine to see with your own eyes that you were easily forgotten. You felt weightless and anonymous. You felt pain, like a knife ripping inside your gut. To add insult to injury, your dads telling you how disappointed they were in you made your heart heavily sink.
Moreover, what affected you the most was knowing you weren’t allowed to be upset. You brought this upon yourself, and you just have to own up to the repercussions of your actions, just like how Eren is owning up to his.
Sleeping peacefully in your bed, you were cradling a pillow to your chest. The sun was beaming through the blinds causing you to stir. Usually, waking up was a simple task; you were a morning person after all. You groaned when the first beam of sunlight hit your face.
Today was your birthday, but it seemed like any other regular day. There was no excitement uncoiling inside you. You weren’t looking forward to another day of being the subject of gossips. Being avoided by Eren like you had the plague wasn’t a pleasing thought as well. Nonetheless, you let your troublesome thoughts take over, allowing it to numb the pinch of sadness of being left behind.
You walked down the halls, a few of your comrades greeting you. As you opened the door to Erwin’s office, you were taken aback by the view.
“Happy Birthday, (Y/N).” Eren was holding a large cake in his hands. It wasn’t the best you’ve seen, but it sure did look tasty. Judging from the aprons tied to their bodies, you deduced that the three of them baked it for you.
However, that did not clear the visible confusion plastered on your face. “Eren? What are you…?”
“He has our permission to court you,” Erwin said.
“Huh?”
“Brat, don’t act like you weren't gloomy these past days. I told you I wouldn't allow you to date until you're forty-five, but I guess it's better than to see you moping around all day.” Levi was fighting the tears that were threatening to roll down his cheeks. His daughter had grown up so fast, where did all the time go.
At that point you were welling up with tears. Call it dramatic, but you’ve been down in the dumps for the past days. You weren’t expecting such a surprise. It wasn’t about the cake; it was about them getting along to make you happy.
“Little sweetheart, if you cry that won’t be fun for anyone.”
“I’m sorry, I’m just so happy to see all three of you get along.” Once that first tear broke free, the rest followed in an unbroken stream.
Eren put the cake down and went to your aid to wipe your tears away. “I’m sorry for being a jerk to you, please don’t cry. So are we gonna celebrate or just stand here? Also (Y/N), I think the captain added too much sugar to the cake, so don’t be surprised if it’s too sweet.”
Levi was quick to counter, “If you don’t want to clean the stables for a month then I suggest you shut your yap."
Stories always claim that the only true love we can ever find is a once in a lifetime opportunity. But you were a rule breaker, you found true love twice: in your adoptive parents, and in Eren.

A/N: To anon, writing this was a challenge because it was so specific, and because I've never read nor written an Eren fic before. I know it isn't my best work (I'm sorry) but I hope you enjoy ;)
