Mmm yes my favourite disney movie where a pathetic nerd boy, an explosive obsessed florist, a teenage girl with extensive knowledge of heavy machinery, a native american army medic, two elderly people and an unhinged frenchman who eats dirt discover empathy and join together to fight the evils of capitalism.

Atlantis: the Lost Empire (2001) and Studio Ghibli’s Castle in the Sky are mirrors of each other — in one, a short, dark haired himbo helps the princess of a lost empire get to her home hidden in the sky, and in the other a tall, light haired nerd saves the princess of a lost empire from being taken from her home hidden in the sea. Both protagonists’ fathers died in pursuit of the hidden/lost kingdoms, effectively passing the search on to their sons. Both feature single or dual-person airships. Both princesses are sought by the army for a power tied to their magical crystal necklaces. Both protagonists are accompanied by ragtag teams (who previously also were going to kidnap the princess!) to rescue the princesses. There are large robots that protect the lost empires. Both lost empires are capable of incredible destruction. Both princesses go by nicknames that nearly rhyme, and both also have complicated longer names. Both lost empires used to possess incredible advanced technology which has since been lost. The bad guys kidnap the princess and bring her into a secret chamber far below the city that only royalty can unlock, said to contain the lost power of the lost city.

Look, I'll throw hands defending Treasure Planet and Atlantis and I won't apologize for it.

This is one of my childhood genres! Grew up on half of these movies and probably absorbed some character traits. Thanks for the watchlist
Movie/TV Recommendation for People Who Are Fans of Cloudward, Ho!
Some of these are explicit inspirations for the season (from interviews/articles), and others are ones I either like/might appeal if you've been liking the Cloudward, Ho! so far:
Treasure Planet (2002) - animated movie
Disney movie based on the book Treasure Island
Has a solar-punk / space pirate aesthetic
Great characters, great music, fun adventure movie
My favourite Disney animated film (cause I love pirates)
Tumblr media
Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)
Disney animated movie
Very adventure/historical with a similar premise as Cloudward, Ho!
Has steampunk aesthetics & a good story/characters
Tumblr media
Castle in the Sky (1986) - animated movie
Studio Ghibli movie set in airships/1800s setting
Adventure story with a mythical place they're trying to find
I admittedly haven't watched, but it seems good and is on my watchlist
Tumblr media
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988)
Terry Gilliam steampunk-adventure movie
Strange in the same vein of many of his stories
Has a sky ship in it
Brennan said it inspired the idea of having new adventurers joining the older crew
Also haven't watched, so can't vouch for it
Tumblr media
Stardust (2007) - movie
Mostly historical / fantasy, but has sky-pirates / sky ships
Stars Charlie Cox & many famous people
Robert De Niro plays a gay pirate
Tumblr media
Nautilus (2024) - tv show
Based on 20, 000 Leagues Under the Sea
Steam-punk submarine / nautical adventure
Has the actor of John Silver from Black Sails in it
Or watch any of the many film adaptations of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Tumblr media
Disenchantment (2018) - tv show
Animated show by the creator of Futurama & The Simpsons
Mostly fantasy, but in later seasons they go to Steamland - a steampunk world and more adventure takes place
Mostly included this cause it's a fun show and I love to recommend it to more people
Tumblr media
Around the World in 80 Days (2021) - TV Show
There are many adaptations of this book, admittedly I've only watched the movie, but my Grandma said this one's good and it has David Tennant in it
Less fantastical than the others on this list, more "grounded" I guess in real life, but still has a core group going on an adventure in the Victorian era in a hot-air-balloon
Or watch one of the many other movie adaptations of the same book
Tumblr media
Time Bandits (1981)
Terry Gilliam movie about a group of time travelling bandits and British child
I love this movie and if I'd watched it when I was younger it would have become my whole personality
Mostly just a vibes thing that connects this one

My go-to easy summer food is a homemade pasta salad: pasta of choice with canned chicken, chickpeas, and fresh cucumber mixed in, drenched in as much Italian salad dressing as possible. It is essentially just an excuse to eat Italian dressing.
what food do you like?
if it can be considered a conduit for hot sauce or vinegar count me in

I just know Westerfeld giggled when he decided to add that Hapsburg quote in the final news clipping in Goliath

Remember "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" ? I feel like there's been a distancing from the "reduce" and "reuse" part and a favoritism towards "recycle" by corporate American.
Capitalism can still thrive with recycling in the mix. You buy Plastic Thing 1, throw it away after one use, and they take that and recycle it into Plastic Thing 2 and sell it back to you. All while continuing to harm the environment.
Reusing puts a damper on things. They can't sell you Plastic Thing 2 when you're still using Plastic Thing 1. Plastic forks, for example- there is literally no reason why you can't reuse plastic forks more than once (aside from maybe microplastics, but it's too late for that)
Reducing is the one everyone wants to ignore. Just don't buy Plastic Thing 1. You don't need Plastic Thing 1. Pick up a set of metal forks and use those for years. Convenience is killing the planet

Note
why bother caring about the environment when 1. It’s so obviously a lost cause and 2. There’s definitely going to be a nuclear war?
And what are you doing about it Anon? Learn about ecological restoration or get out of my way.

leia organa truly has one of the best bait-and-switch character introductions of all time because when you meet her she's this brave, stoic picture of elegance and justice and always knows just what to say to vader and tarkin and is clad in white like an angel and is this perfect two-dimensional archetype of pureness of heart. and then approximately half an hour later into the film she meets luke and han and she IMMEDIATELY shows her true colors as a sarcastic, bitchy control freak with a massive impulsive streak and a deep mine of hyperspecific insults. 10/10 character design i'm obsessed with her

As a society we have benefited so much from successful public health measures that we now have the privilege of declaring that we must not need them anymore
Bitch before enriched flour, neural tube defects like spina bifida were far more common. Even now, spina bifida clinicians and researchers are begging to have salt and maize fortified to reach groups that don’t use as much flour. Before iodized salt, the United States had a fucking GOITER BELT. Eleven years after the introduction of fluoridated water, a city in Michigan found the rate of dental caries among school children dropped a staggering 60%— in an era where tooth decay regularly fucking killed people
I’m literally not even going to start on vaccines, which are among the most successful and robustly studied public health measures in world history
You might say “oh well today we all have access to vitamins and toothpastes and dentists so we don’t need those things in our food supplies” and boy do white people on social media loooove to fucking say that. But here’s the thing: no, people don’t all have easy access to those things. That’s privilege talking yet again

Lords and Ladies by Terry Pratchett is good because all gentle women who are treated like doormats should be allowed to raid an armory and the go absolutely berserk on some bitches

BREAKING: Iran has retaliated against the United States and has fired missles into US military bases in Doha, Qatar
Reports are also saying Iran is also targeting US bases in Abu Dhabi and Bahrain as well.
Iran is retaliating against the United States after Donald Trump targeted 3 of their nuclear sites Saturday night in defense of Israel. Trump also threatened a regime change for Iran just yesterday after his own Vice President and national security staff claimed that the goal was not a regime change
Qatar has now shut down its airspace and Trump is back in the Situation Room with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth
Being dragged into yet another Middle Eastern conflict.
