Lesen

Ich war mein Leben lang kein sonderlich aktiver Leser. Wenn man mich als Kind getroffen hätte, hätte man das vielleicht nicht unbedingt gedacht. Ich war relativ zurückgezogen und konnte mich gut mit mir selbst beschäftigen (und das nicht nur in der Pubertät, haha, ihr versteht?!). In vielen Biografien liest man immer, das solche Kinder dann oft sehr viel lesen. Das war bei mir nicht so. Über mich wurde aber bisher auch keine Biografie geschrieben, was vielleicht, vielleicht auch nicht, damit zusammen hängt. Außer dem, was wir in der Schule lesen mussten (und da auch nur das absolut notwendigste, ich habe ganze Arbeiten über Bücher geschrieeben, die ich vorher quasi nicht aufschlug) und Lustigen Taschenbüchern habe ich fast nichts gelesen.

In etwa seit ich mein Studium angefangen habe, habe ich mich auch ein bisschen mit Self-Improvement beschäfigt. In dem Zuge kam dann natürlich auch raus, dass glückliche und gute Menschen zwingend immer auch viel lesen. Das ist die erste Regel, um dem Club der reichen und schönen beitreten zu dürfen. Seit dem versuche ich, das Lesen irgendwie mehr in mein Leben zu integrieren. Das klappte so mittel. Ich las mehr, als in den Jahren davor, aber so richtig regelmäßig passierte das nicht. Eher Phasenweise.

Seit Anfang des Jahres läuft das anders. Seit dem habe ich eine gewisse Routine für das Lesen aufgebaut. Und auch wenn ich nicht mehr genau weiss, warum das so passiert ist, muss ich sagen, dass es wirklich gut funktioneirt. Das ganze läuft so: Ich habe morges 30 Minuten reserviert, um zu lesen. In der Regel mit einer Tasse Kaffee, das lässt mich noch sehr viel Weltbürgerlicher wirken. Und ich habe abends vor dem Schlafen 30 Minuten zum lesen reserviert. Morgens lese ich ein Sachbuch, um mich in eine Produktive Stimmung für den Tag zu bringen, abends ein fiktionales Buch, um besser abschalten zu können.

Das klappt insgesamt sehr gut. Ich schaffe es nicht immer, beide Termine wahrzunehmen, aber in 98% der Fälle schaffe ich es zumindest, morgens oder abends zu lesen. Das hat dafür gesorgt, dass ich in diesem Jahr bisher 8 Bücher las. Das sind 1,6 Bücher pro Monat. Das ist für meine Verhältnisse ziemlich viel. Lesen, großartig, probiert es doch auch mal!

Deadpool 2

Gestern sahen wir Deadpool 2. Etwas zu meiner eigenen Überraschung fand ich ihn wirklich lustig und habe das Kino mit dem Gefühl verlassen, einen Film gesehehn zu haben, an dem ich Freude hatte. Zu meiner eigenen Überraschung deshalb, weil ich den ersten Teil damals relativ albern fand und den ganzen Hype um den Film nicht so recht nachvollziehen konnte.

A propos erster Teil: Von dem weiss ich quasi nichts mehr. Offenbar sogar so wenig, dass ich die Anspielung auf den Bösewicht im ersten Teil ganz am Anfang des zweiten Teils nicht verstand (ich habe trotzdem mitgelacht, nicht, dass noch jemand glaubt, ich sei kein echter Fan!). Ich meine mich aber zu erinnern, dass der Humor-Level sehr ähnlich war. Ich kann mir also nicht so richtig erklären, warum ich einen der Filme mochte, während mir der andere zu albern war. Vielleicht liegt es einfach an der Lebenssituation. Als ich den ersten Teil sah, war ich kurz davor mein Studium abzuschließen, hatte grade einen neuen Job in Köln angenommen. Ich glaube, ich wollte zu der Zeit, dass mein Leben ein bisschen erwachsener wird. Da passte dieser Film vielleicht einfach nicht rein. Jetzt abreibte ich Vollzeit, muss Steuererklärungen machen und Versicherungen abschließen, vielleicht passen mir da ein paar Penis-Witze einfach basser in den verhältnismäßig ernsteren Alltag. Keine Ahnung. Vielleicht habe ich auch insgesamt keinen sonderlich konstanten Geschmack. 🤷‍♀️

Der Film, auf jeden Fall, war gut. Um eine qualifiziertere Review als diese abzugeben, reichen meine Film-Verständnisse leider nicht aus, ihr werdet mir das also leider einfach so glauben müssen. Oder nicht. Macht doch, was ihr wollt. Das allerbeste am Film ist, dass es ihn nicht in 3D gibt. Mal ehrlich, was soll denn der quatsch? Man hat 90 - 140 Minuten diese unbequeme Brille auf, um dann ein paar Tiefeneffekte zu sehen? Keiner macht irgendewtas auch nur im Ansatz spannendes mit dieser Technologie. Ich weiss nicht, ob das, was man momewntan damit macht Peak-3D-Effekte sind, aber ich vermute es einfach mal, ansonsten hätte sicher schon jemand etwas cooles damit gemacht. Dafür wird dann von einem Verlangt, dass man eine zweite Hypothek auf das Haus aufnimmt und die Seele seines erstgeborenene verkauft. Brauche ich nicht, danke.

Um das einmal zusammen zu fassen: Das hier ist keine Review, 3D im Kino ist quatsch, Deadpool 2 ist auch quatsch, aber auf die gute Art, schaut den Trailer und wenn er euch gefällt schaut vielleicht auch den Film.

The state of the internet

The internet has eaten the world. Where in older days, respect was everything, now information has taken that place.

Here's Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the internet on his feelings towards its current state in the Guardian:

“I’m still an optimist, but an optimist standing at the top of the hill with a nasty storm blowing in my face, hanging on to a fence,”

You may already feel in a similar way. If you don't, you should then go on and read this article by James Bridle, in which he talks about what grotesque things happen to see the light of day when content is only produced to satisfy ranking and search algorythms, not humans.

Someone or something or some combination of people and things is using YouTube to systematically frighten, traumatise, and abuse children, automatically and at scale, and it forces me to question my own beliefs about the internet, at every level.

Oh boy, where are we heading with this?

We somehow ended up in this store yesterday.

At times, I try to make music myself. I then realize I have no talent for that at all and proceed to just look for new songs and artists I don't know.

It was about time, basically the only feature I was missing from Netflix. I'm a little surprised they didn't introduce it earlier. Regarding the fact that most of the downloadable content is their own, it's probably a license thing.

This week, Twitter introduced some changes. Even though they sound pretty straight forward, it seems like the people at Twitter put a lot of thought in it.

If one were to summarize the changes in one sentence, it would be something like "Things, that are no real part of the content of a Tweet don't count as content anymore and thus are not added to the 140 character limit".

The only confisung point is about starting tweets with @replys:

New Tweets that begin with a username will reach all your followers.

That basically means that "private" conversations can only start from a regular tweet now. Everything that originates from the reply button semms to remain unchanged. That's okay with me.

Looks like Twitter isn't ruined yet.

For this reason, we’ll be removing Sunrise from the app stores in the next few days. On August 31st, we’ll officially shut down the app and it will stop working all together.

That's a little sad to hear. I switched to Google Calendar a while ago for testing and it seems it'll stay that way for some time now.

I'm excited for the future of outlook (which is pretty solid, in case you didn't know) on the other hand.

Switching from OxygenOS to CM13

I recently switched the operating systems on my OnePlus One. Here are some quick thoughts on the differences I noticed so far.

Note: Since I own an OnePlus One, I was running on OxygenOS 1.0, so comparing it to version 13 of another OS might not be too fair. On the other hand, the reason why I still was on version 1.0 after all this time was that there were no OTA Updates coming from OnePlus. That definitely is a factor you can add to the comparison.

Battery Life The biggest thing I noticed so far is the improved Battery life. I'm not sure this is due to CM13 or just a thing that Google improved in Android 6 in general, but to be honest, I don't care too much. I used to be left with 5 or 10% battery life after a day of usage (which is roughly from 7 A.M. to 1 A.M for me). With CM13, I've got 40% left even with high usage and lots of cellular data.

Random Crashes The most annoying thing about OxygenOS were the random crashes. To be fair, random might be the wrong word since they happened on an almost regular basis. When I unlocked my phone in the morning I could be sure I had to enter the PIN for my SIM because the phone crashed in the night. This would happen another time or two throughout the day, without a recognizable reason. I did not encounter a single crash in my 4 days of using CM13.

Quick Tip: Drop Shapes in Adobe Illustrator

When I first started out using Illustrator or other graphic programs, I used to think of everything in basic shapes (and I still do today). As a consequence of this thinking, I built more complex shapes as a combination of basic shapes. A drop shape would be a circle and a triangle.

Creating drop shapes that way works, but it isn’t very effective. You have to fiddle around with the two shapes fitting on top of each other, then hope Illustrator handles the union fine and lastly optimise some of the anchor points.

Much simpler way: Pull the upmost anchor point of a circle upwards a reasonable distance, then reset the anchor’s handles to make the top of the drop shape pointy. Easy, embarrassingly obvious and probably saving me a minute or two in the future.

Apparently, a nuclear power plant in Germany is infected with computer viruses and apparently this is nothing too uncommon.

As an example, Hypponen said he had recently spoken to a European aircraft maker that said it cleans the cockpits of its planes every week of malware designed for Android phones. The malware spread to the planes only because factory employees were charging their phones with the USB port in the cockpit.

Because the plane runs a different operating system, nothing would befall it. But it would pass the virus on to other devices that plugged into the charger.

We've had a lot of celebrities passing away so far in 2016, too many really to believe it's just bad luck. BBC has the numbers behind this.

In Kopenhagen machte ich ein paar Bilder. Aus Platzgründen alle mit dem Handy, aber das hat ja auch in Hamburg schon gut funktioniert. Hier das erste vernünftige Foto, das ich in der Stadt machte. Das Boot war glückliches Timing.

Dieses lästernde, lüsterne, kiffende, krähende Genie ist unersetzlich. Wir werden ganz schön arbeiten, ja kämpfen müssen, um ohne ihn nicht in einer Republik von Spießern zu enden.
