Reposted from @totaltritraining *HITTING KEY SESSIONS* By head coach Chris Standidge. I'm going to use the 4 x 8 mins bike session as an example but it can be any session. We have a magical FTP number that we use as threshold. In reality, it changes everyday and actually is more a ‘zone’ than a number. Whenever I am doing a session I start at 95% of "target" and the first interval or two is very much a "see how we feel" and then we have a chance to go......"ok this is comfortable, I can go to 100% for the next couple of intervals" before I start to think about the finale. If we go in at 100% and its not our day, we are only going to go backwards. Lets think about peppering intervals on and over the number. The other thing to bear in mind.....we can go for longer at intensity if we take longer for our HR to get up to threshold, than spiking it and creating a oxygen debt....so just ease yourself up to speed or power, your sessions will be of better quality and finish stronger.💪🏻 I am seeing lots of athletes just go in too hard and going backwards..... But one thing these tests fail to measure is athlete ‘resilience’ - which is actually a major factor in how an endurance athlete will perform in an event. Some great tips from @ko_mahony 🏊♀️🚴♂️🏃♂️💪 Reposted from @totaltritraining ⭐️Move your body differently to capitalise on the the new year starting now! ⭐️How can we get the most out of the toughest months of the year? 1. Refresh your mind and reduce engrained poor habits. 2. Re-polarise our training at a time of year when it is easy for harsh weather conditions to increase the training stress of lower intensity work. 3. Accept that our body is naturally functioning at a lower level in the Northern Hemisphere due to lower light levels and cooler temperatures. ⭐️Practically this looks like: · Allowing yourself extra recovery in quality work so you are pushing more towards meeting the targets of the workout, not delivering the session as exactly prescribed. · Having the bravery to lose your ego, accepting that at the right intensity in outdoor UK winter conditions could mean adopting a pretty slow pace into a soggy headwind (riding) or covering muddy ground (running). · Paying attention to your movements and your mood during training- Are you moving efficiently and focused on the task at hand? Small batches of good quality movement are helpful at a time of year when it is easier for training (and life!) to take it out of you. Shorten the session and deliver the adapted plan properly, letting go of the need to “complete the original task” ⭐️How we approach training during the challenging months of the year can set the stage for our decisions on how an adaptive mindset can play into our favour for the rest of the year. ⭐️Hope you have the courage today to try something a little different!
