Canadian newcomers Basement Revolver crafts and delivers indie rock music they describe as introspective and emotional, reminiscent of the Pixies and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Considering I’m incredibly fond of both those legendary acts, it comes as no wonder that I find myself gravitating towards Basement Revolver’s debut song, Johnny.  A copious dosage of the Pixies’ surf pop grit certainly rears its rugged head on the fuzzy, scuzzy indie pop song, whose ripe emotions are driven into deep realms of angsty nostalgia by lead singer Chrisy Hurn’s aching sweet voice. I’m fully convinced I need to stay away from this fellow Johnny, because the whole ordeal Chrisy went through sounds absolutely miserable, though the song it has inspired is a captivating delight. The debut song will be on Basement Revovler’s debut EP, due out this July.

What I am Actually Thinking While Writing Papers.

The promise of education is that it will in some way prepare me for the future – this thing that I am trying to build. This perpetuates the idea that I am in one way or another waiting for my life to start, that bit by bit I am building a tiny empire, to prove to the world outside of me that I have my shit together. We are all trying to prove the same thing – that we can be successful and make something purposeful out of this life. What if that isn’t the case. What if in building our empires, our small enterprises, we are missing out on the presence of being, the actual essence of life? What if being successful can be actively described as one’s ability to be self-aware and others-aware, which can be found within the exchange of love and community, when done authentically. I think that we need to suggest a new model, or at least a new worldview. A model that sees education as an enriching principle rather than a means to an end. A model that views life itself as a form of education and values spirituality, the arts and creativity as a form of intelligence rather than the ability to be intellectually intelligent.   Do I really need a piece of paper that says I know how to paint things or care about people? What even am I trying to improve?

Gratitude. I'm thankful for friends who make life a safe place, Who make the daily grind feel like a playground to explore Where childhood fantasies awaken And fearful doubts are shaken, Gratitude.
