Hello! My hunger games (and specifically Odesta) obsession has returned and I recently have come across Carrick Bend. I’m about to compliment dump like crazy. You’ve written a beautiful piece of work. As an Odesta shipper too with exactly the same headcanons, it feels like you’ve gone into my heart and imagination and given life to these scenarios. From childhood Odesta (when I literally read the pier lore I was şčřëāmǐņġ because I was like how is this exactly what I wanted/imagined and someone just like wrote it…and you’ve made real and I can always go back to it???), the original characters (district 4, the traditions, lore the unique pseudo-career district dynamic, the relationship between mentors and their mentees, pre/post games friendships, family dynamics and rebellions), career!annie, dysfunctional!odesta, finnick trying to live and not survive, our dear know-it-all mags, annie in the capitol, the shift/response to rebellion…everything just everything was a home run. From the conversations about having a child together, Annie and Johanna needing each other as girls, the emotions and sacrifices of Calder, Shake and Corin and his daughter, the disappointment of annie not able to give katniss a bracelet, finnicks yearning, Annie’s resilience, Rio, Banner, Aria, Eric, Bay EVERYONE- it all just felt so rooted and real. The harder, more sensitive topics surrounding coping mechanisms, trauma, unhealthy communication and treated with the utmost care and not sensationalized for a narrative. You’ve taken Suzanne Collin’s side characters/setting and fleshed them out in a way that I have no choice but to accept yours as canon. Your understanding of their tragic love story actually being a declaration of love (whether that be romantic, platonic, familial, unconditional, self-love, mentor) has manifested in the most profound characterizations that seek to reflect the human condition, setting you above and beyond anything I’ve ever read before. The way you write with alternating flashbacks, POV, and inner monologue is riveting. Your writing is a true amalgamation of romance, angst, coming-of-age, folklore set in the backdrop of a dystopian political commentary. How you articulated everything I could’ve ever wanted/hoped to have learned about Odesta, wow, you’ve just blown me away. all of this to say. YOU DID THAT. BE PROUD. PERIODT. you’ve written and accomplished something so few people ever set out to do and have passed not with flying colors, but by seeing and unlocking a spectrum of new ones. THANK YOU. Thank you for sharing your talent with us. I can only imagine how much time and energy writing takes, let alone a project this thorough and massive. I hope that wherever you are your blankets are warm and cozy and the pillow always cool. I know you said you’ll come back to this work eventually, and know that you’ll always have my support whenever that may be. YOUR TALENT, ON YOUR TIMELINE. I do hope that we get to see Annie gift katniss a bracelet someday, but if that chapter never comes know that you’ve already spoiled us to the gills. You’ve given me so much joy reading your work and I hope that joy and appreciation is reciprocated back to you 💕

Polin + Parallels, Callbacks, & Foreshadowing (Seasons 1-3)

one of my personal favourite odesta/district 4 culture headcanon is that couples that are going to be married weave the net that’s going to be placed over them for their ceremony. they’re tying the knot. in four it’s made out of sturdy rope, meant to be hung above the couple’s bed for the years to come, but in thirteen they couldn’t afford to use an important commodity as such, so annie and finnick made their marriage net out of grass - which was composted following the ceremony.

annie does weave a new marriage net out of rope, once she’s back in four, and has it hung above her bed where it belongs - and where her and finnick’s son is born. it helps her sort through her fair share of grief and anger, this delicate, time consuming work.

an oldest daughter who has sacrificed and suppressed her needs in order to protect and take care of her family. ending up with a boy who vows to take care of her and protect her above all else.

a youngest son who has been treated as insignificant and unnecessary for his entire life. ending up with a girl who needs him and chooses him above all else.

so many factors try to divide them. class divisions. the hunger games. a war.

but nothing ever really worked. because, at a very human level, a level they fit together like a glove.
