Proposal for new fandom etiquette:
If you read a fic because it was linked/recced somewhere, you leave a comment saying "came from XXX" and that comment doesn't need to include anything else.
Because when all of a sudden there's a lot of activity on one particular fic I WANNA KNOW WHY!!!!!

Me: Exercise does not cause weight loss. This is a fact that has been demonstrated so robustly in research that even doctors, who hate and fear evidence, are grudgingly starting to admit this.
Someone reading that post: Cool, but have you considered that exercise leads to weight loss?
Me: I am going to eat you

no animal was harmed during the making of this video. not one. for the few minutes that we were shooting film, the guns of each hunter fell silent. the industrial bolt throwers observed a moment's peace and the jaws of every predator hung softly open. no fish bit any hook and the bait worms held off on drowning only until the cameras stopped. the tails of ruminants ceased to flick just as their attendant flies, in unison, landed on their flanks to catch their tiny breaths. a spider instantly stopped winding silk around a wasp, patiently waiting for the caesura to end. a young veterinarian paused with the syringe in their hand. somewhere, a colicky baby stopped biting its mother's nipple and nursed happily for the very first time. we're sorry. we're sorry it couldn't have been longer. we didn't know this would happen.

They say science fiction never really predicts the future, and yet Captain Picard says “tea, earl grey, hot” in that meticulous way observed only in someone with a slightly unusual accent who’s finally figured out the exact cadence and phrasing their voice activated smart-whatever actually understands and suspects if they allow their tone to vary even one iota it’s going to interpret their drink order as a request for a live ocelot.

If this is, as I suspect, a homestuck question, I would be pretty stoked to see any older-beta-Jade in my beloved alpha-grandma-Jade tag. Although from the wording of this question it's probably like. Grandpa Harley & Jake, which is a much bigger popularity disparity, and it does feel a bit different since Grandpa was a minor character for so long before the younger version got introduced, and I'm afraid I also don't care about Grandpa Harley. So there's some nuance here.
If that helps anyone trying to think through "would I disappoint fans of the ship/character" on this one, cause I agree that's a good rule in general.
I have a tagging question. I'm writing a fic where character A is aged up from his canon age and shipped with character Z. I realized that aged up A is actually nearly the same character as his prototype version, character B, because A is just a younger B with a slightly different personality and background. But because this is an AU, the background doesn't matter and the grown up personality is all speculation anyway. The fandom considers A and B as different characters despite having the same name, but B is a very rare character that's almost never written about while A is a main character.
For this fic, should I only tag A/Z or is it fine to also tag B/Z, since this was intended to be older A but he's so similar to B he might as well be the same character, and I think B or B/Z fans may also like this fic? I like both A and B and their ship with Z, so I know I'd like it, but I don't know if I'd help or hinder people with this. I'd mention that this character is basically a fusion of A and B in the author's note so that people who don't like one or the other are still informed and can leave.
Hmmm. I think I'd personally just tag A/Z but then add a sentence in the summary along the lines of "Can be read as B/Z too"
That said, I can definitely see the case for tagging both since A and B have the same name. Now you've got me second-guessing.
I think I'll need to open this one up to a poll:
Please add nuance and/or explanation in the notes!
#i voted that i'd tag a/z and b/z mostly because this doesn't seem that weird to me#i'm in all kinds of fandoms where you write a fic for your weird little offshoot of the popular pairing#with the alt timeline versions of the popular characters or whatever#and you tag it with both the popular ship and your specific smaller ship that is mostly full of unrelated junk#this is just sorta how it goes in fandoms with time travel i think#i haven't looked for homestuck but tbh i wouldn't be surprised if say alpha davejade was a child tag to davejade#which makes sense to me!

[[Art ID: Bill Preston leans his cheek against Ted Logan's bare shoulder from behind. Bill and Ted both have their eyes closed peacefully. The lighting is multicolored but soft. The chaotic brush strokes of the background and the cropping create a sense of being pressed together with nothing else in the world. End ID]]

[[Art ID: Under a heading that says "How do you feel?", Ted Logan is proudly wearing an underbust corset and poofy skirt over his Iron Maiden t-shirt and converses. Grinning, with his hands on his hips, Ted answers, "Like a most savory babe, babe".
In the foreground, a flustered Bill Preston in a suit of armor answers "...confused". End ID]]
6/9's Bill & Ted day, dude!

Hey kid, look at me.
I want you to T-pose. Turn your right thumb up and your left thumb doen and look at your right thumb. Move your arms up and down a bit until you feel a nerve running from your armpit to your palm. Now turn your right thumb down and your left thumb up, and look at your left thumb. Keep your chest facing forward and your shoulders back. Move your arms again until you feel that nerve again. Keep alternating between these two for a minute, or look at each thumb thirty times each.
Now sit down. Put your left hand firmly under your left buttock, palm down. Keep your shoulders back and put your right hand over the crown of your head, very gently pulling it to the right. Do this for thirty seconds, then do it again but with your right hand under your right buttock.
These are stretches for the nerves in your arms, and are very good for people who sit behind a computer a lot, or fibre artists, or you name it. Do them daily. They will hurt in the beginning, but keep doing them, even after the pain has gone, or it will return and you'll have to start all over.
#oh hey thanks op this finally got the fucked up elbow nerves i've been trying to stretch for weeks#reference#ref

“My favourite thing was a bunch of people made a giant sign that said “How am I going to be an octopus about this?” and held it up during Pompeii at all the right times and it distracted me enough to sing “octopus” instead by accident.”
