THE DREAM STATE: JAY EDWARD’S MAGICAL CREATIONS
Tumblr media
Today on Citrus Magazine we are featuring local artist, Jay Edward’s magical creations. These detailed and unique pieces are eye-catching. Looking at them feels like looking into a magical and dreamy world. See what they have to say about themselves and their creative process below.
“I’ve been creating art my whole life but I started to really get into it at around age 13. I was really unhappy and struggling with anxiety and depression, making art allowed me to channel my feelings into something tangible.”
Tumblr media
“Most of my art tends to feel psychedelic. I like to incorporate spirituality and fantasy into familiar things, but by putting a twist on it, it feels as though these objects and faces are from a different dimension.”
Tumblr media
“My goal is to eventually write and illustrate my own books. I would love to create adult or children’s books!”

SEE YA 2020!
Tumblr media
2020 has been one hell of a year—one that will probably live on in our minds forever. Although many of us had shared experiences of staying home, stress-baking, picking up new hobbies, scrolling through TikTok for hours on end, Zoom fatigue, and also maybe a general feeling of hopelessness and ennui, this year was a different and unique experience for everyone. While some of the nightmares of 2020 will continue creeping into this year, that doesn’t mean we can’t take stock, reflect now and create a fresh start for ourselves. Now, you may be scoffing at the idea of writing down unattainable goals and starting off the year with some unrealistically high hopes that rapidly fade away. New year’s resolutions often don’t go too hot for most of us. (And January 2020 taught us some lessons about unbridled optimism at the start of the year). However, when you think about it, the new year doesn’t need to be a marker of a fresh start, or a time where you have to start figuring out how to reinvent yourself entirely. Simply reflecting on the year, writing down a few things you would like to work on, or keeping track of heartfelt memories can all be very simple ways to work on self growth and being more present in your daily life. Here are a few ways to do that.
Did you ever create a time-capsule in elementary school, filled with drawings and descriptions of your favorite foods and movies at the time? Well, instead of waiting years for your high school or college graduation to open it up, you can create a yearly time capsule by writing a letter yourself in the new year. Write down anything you’d like to remember about how you feel now, at the precipice of 2021, and whatever you’d like future-you to think about.
Tumblr media
Looking back on the past year through photos and videos can be an easy way to relive all your memories — but there are a few special things you can do this year to capture sweet moments in a unique way. Try using the 1SE app that captures one second everyday resulting in a 6 minute video at the end of the year. The most challenging part would be remembering to take a short clip everyday, but even making monthly or weekly videos can be nostalgic and fun. Another similar project you can start in the new year: a jar of memories. Take a jar, mug, or box and label it with “2021” and decorate however you would like. Throughout the year whenever you experience something fun or sweet — whether it’s a ticket stub, bus pass, or even a grocery store receipt where you bought your favorite ice cream. You can also write down thoughts, memories, or drawings on a small piece of paper and put it in for later.
Tumblr media
We are all familiar with new year resolutions, but here are a few ideas on how to make your resolutions more realistic and easier to execute. Try jotting down things you would like to work on instead of exact things you need to get done. For example, instead of writing down “read 15 books” try “read more” or “read whenever you find the time.” Clear and concise goals may work for some and can motivate them, but sometimes when an entire new year’s resolution list is specific, it can result in lots of disappointment at the end of the year. Here are a few new year resolutions ideas everyone can put on their list.
Tumblr media
The new year doesn’t have to be the only “fresh start” you get—it can be every minute, hour, day, week, month. A new semester of school, or even every birthday can be a time to set goals and review past memories. Resolutions, keeping track of personal memories and/or items can be a simple yet important way for ourselves to grow and take the time to reflect on a personal level. Cheers to 2021, a new year!

QUARANTINE BLUES: TERYN ROSE’S COLLAGES
Today on Citrus Mag we are featuring Teryn Rose’s beautiful and lively works of art. These collages are genuine, detailed, and full of raw emotion that makes the viewer feel something they cannot explain. See more of her collages and what she has to say about her creative process below.
Tumblr media
“A lot of my work is inspired by the minds of others, this work is a lot that i did when i was in a depressive episode during the start of quarantine, i would stay up for nights on end making art for anyone and everyone. i began to see the possibility of beauty in everything i approached.“
Tumblr media
“i collected every shiny or sparkly or colorful piece of trash on the ground and began to incorporate it into my art. i went to the little libraries and collected magazines and children’s books and old books and used them to display my mind onto a piece of paper, the idea of spreading my art and a piece of me around for everyone is what keeps me doing what i do.”
Tumblr media
“My idea of a fulfilled life, is one that is filled with my friends and family’s art and pieces of all my loved ones around me. i have always been in love with art, but now that i am able to share it with my community means everything to me.”

"But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness. No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure?"
Section 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum", written by Cicero in 45 BC
1914 translation by H. Rackham
"On the other hand, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment, so blinded by desire, that they cannot foresee the pain and trouble that are bound to ensue; and equal blame belongs to those who fail in their duty through weakness of will, which is the same as saying through shrinking from toil and pain. These cases are perfectly simple and easy to distinguish. In a free hour, when our power of choice is untrammelled and when nothing prevents our being able to do what we like best, every pleasure is to be welcomed and every pain avoided. But in certain circumstances and owing to the claims of duty or the obligations of business it will frequently occur that pleasures have to be repudiated and annoyances accepted. The wise man therefore always holds in these matters to this principle of selection: he rejects pleasures to secure other greater pleasures, or else he endures pains to avoid worse pains."
