We are celebrating a birthday! Our baby girl turns a year older...and we are GRATEFUL! So much joy, personality and development. Thankful that God allowed us to become her parents and see her starting to show who God has sent her to be. Like each of our other children, she is unique and holds her own. A husband isn’t coming home tonight. A wife won’t be able to have a private conversation with her husband anymore. A dad won’t be able to give his daughters hugs tonight or ever again. To us - #KobeBryant was a basketball player and was now reinventing himself as a business leader, entrepreneur, philanthropist and more. I HATE that we are so thirsty for “news” that his family wasn’t informed before news outlets were. I think there should legislation and policy implemented to stop this. It happens locally and it happens globally. When death hits us like this - it’s sobering. It’s striking. It also causes (actually forces us) consider the brevity of life. The briefness of our own lives. 41 isn’t old. His contributions are undisputed. This loss forces us to consider our own life contributions and whether we’ve made excuses or maximized our opportunities. This moment requires all of us to pause and simply ... breath. A deep breath. Many of us feel like we grew up with him. My wife and I missed purchasing tickets to his farewell tour in 2015/2016 by a few minutes. We watched almost every game that year. #Kobe was one of those players and motivated us to watch the game. Boy, times have changed. The NBA and the Grammys should have been postponed today. Finally, reporters need a new ethic. It’s DISHONORABLE AND DISTASTEFUL that they would shove a microphone in somebody’s face as soon as they find out a death of a FRIEND to ask them, “how do you feel?”, “What do you want to say?” That should not be. So for now, much respect to your legacy #Mamba. Prayers for your wife, remaining children and family. What we feel from a distance can probably not be described intimately. Prayers to the other individuals who were also lost in today’s crash. We may not know their names, but they matters just as much. Especially to their family and friends. This past Sunday our church honored the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It’s always surprising to me when I hear people’s reaction to the point that Dr. King was first a Pastor and a Preacher. YES - His legacy and impact was significantly beyond the pulpit…yet the pulpit is where it started. I hope that this past Monday (and weekend) you actually had an opportunity to pause and REFLECT - give intentional thought to what Dr. King’s legacy IS (not was), what he actually said (without revisionist history), and what America was “upset” with him about. For those of you that are parents, go to Youtube and invite your family to gather around the tv and actually listen to some of his speeches - AND - then discuss them and what it means. Adults - take some time and Google some of his writings and READ them. Read His books. Don’t gloss over the holiday. If you really love America…and people….and God…and want the best for us - much of what he produced during his brief lifetime offers some solutions for us TODAY. Have we made progress? I think we can agree on it. It seems that as a country we don’t agree that there’s still work to be done. To be sure, there is! We CANNOT be apart of the solution(s) if we IGNORE the problem(s). Thank you Dr. King for your dream, life, legacy. Psalm 122 - “I was glad when they said to me, let’s go to the House of the Lord!” It’s the first Sunday of a new year and a new decade. What a PRIVILEGE to get up and make our way to Gods house!
