(DANGANRONPA V3 SPOILERS)

whenever people bring up the topic on who should have survived in v3, i think it’s really easy for people on each side to be biased. but here’s how i see things:

unlike the cast in trigger happy havoc and goodbye despair, danganronpa v3’s characters all have the great potential for their own survivor arcs.

now, this statement in itself may also have bias, since v3 and the cast both have a very soft spot in my heart. but with how the story went, with the arcs and plot twists, i think it was a lot easier for fans to say that some characters deserved to live more than others.

for example, the protagonist swap in the first class trial. while shuichi had such a heartfelt character arc, some fans believe that kaede should have had her story go through, since she’s a female protagonist, and we’ve already had a detective character survive in kyoko.

and i completely get it! because both shuichi and kaede have the potential to lead the story in completely different directions! it’s probably the biggest “what if” scenario in the series. would there be different survivors if kaede took the lead? how would the current death order be impacted?

another example is with himiko. in chapter three, her story was finally beginning to set off. you know who else’s story was beginning to get interesting at the same time? tenko’s.

and we all know what happened to one of them.

because of this, it’s easy for people who love tenko to feel like she was snubbed of the rest of her story, while himiko got to live instead! and once again, i completely get it! because if himiko was the subject in the caged child song, tenko could have had her character focus more on feeling like she failed to protect himiko.

really, the entire cast can pretty much be fit into the debate.

ryoma trying to find something to live for.

kirumi staying alive both for her country, and also for herself, as she finds her own self worth.

miu finding her own self confidence, and becoming a more open person in the process.

and the list goes on! the point is, while it’s easy to see the missed opportunities with the characters who died earlier on, we should also think of it this way. even if the death orders did change, people would still say that someone who did survive deserved it less than someone else.

and that’s why i think the entire debate is kind of pointless.

once again, believe whatever you want, i understand the thought process behind each side. but don’t bash anyone for liking himiko’s arc, and don’t bash anyone for wanting to see kaedes entire story, etc. not. cool. dudes.

i always think about how in s2 episode 2 baseball was about to calculate the speed at which the rocket ship was flying before he was interrupted by trophy. like it’s shown a few times that he’s also pretty smart (not on the same level as fan or test tube but still probably able to somewhat keep up with them) but his nerdy side was barely ever mentioned in the show and that makes me sad.

I like that baseball is a fucking dork, in anotha universe he’s an engineer or scientist of some sort but for now he’s like that unmarried weirdly intelligent uncle you only see during funerals who is full of fun facts.

OK OK im SO glad that someone else brought this up, and im more than willing to give my thoughts since im also insane for these two and very passionate about this writing flaw lol. I fully agree that the scene was kinda iffy for me, but it’s for a different reason.

So regarding when suitcase was chewing baseball out, i don’t think it was for the action of voting for test tube in itself, but how he reacted afterwards when he said this to lightbulb when she confronted him:

“But look in the bright side! Now that your team’s gone, there’s only one thing you can do! You win this for them!”

So teeeechnically yes suitcase was right about the whole “not personal” thing not being the same. But even then I think that this was a stupid writing decision for 2 reasons

1. This was a very out of character thing for baseball to say. Even if he’s trying to make himself feel better about his decision, after all his development in episode 13 and 14, I don’t think this is something he would realistically say. Also, if you remove his line here then suitcase later on would’ve been in the wrong for chewing him out only for voting for test tube (which she also did), which makes me feel as if the line was added so that scene would work.

and 2. In their eyes, this episode took place like a day at most after test tube’s elimination. And when that happened, baseball was extremely apologetic to her. He was ashamed for the decision he made, and it was obvious that he did not have an easy time making this choice. SO WHAT HAPPENED TO MAKE HIS MOOD CHANGE DURING THAT TIME?!

So the “it wasn’t personal” drama didn’t need to really happen in the first place. I think that if that one line didn’t exist and suitcase called baseball out on something besides that, (ex. him lying on his team captain question) the scene would’ve been stronger.

And this isn’t even the only writing decision I’m beefing with!! I think that the biggest problem with episode 15 was that both baseball’s character and his relationship with suitcase was really out of character.

Cause how is it that such a beautiful moment between them in episode 14 with the docs is completely ruined in the span of a day?! (in their pov)

the doc scene in episode 14 was such a well written moment for their dynamic. It showed that even though baseball couldn’t just magically fix his actions, he was still willing to try and listen. AND THEN THEY JUST COMPLETELY THREW THAT OUT THE WINDOW!! My guess is that they needed to give suitcase more of a reason to vote baseball off, but they still could’ve done that without wrecking their development together!!

So how I see it was that technically suitcase was in the right in that scene, but like barely, since it was only because of that one stupid line that baseball said. But yeah i agree with you that their dynamic is kinda weird to pinpoint, since they haven’t had much time to talk things out unlike nickel and balloon who had an entire season together

I do hope we get a little baseball and suitcase interaction in the final ep (highly doubtful let me dream) they have been so tricky to fully flesh out in my head due to “was this intentional or a writers flaw?” Factors.

like example: suitcase saying “if she(testtube) is really your friend she’ll understand it’s just part of the game”. Then later she chews him out for “choosing” to vote out tt in truth or flare, even though the reason he even voted for testtube was because of knife and suitcase.

Was the hypocrisy intentional on her part or not? She was the one who suggested the “not personal” idea in the first place why is she getting mad when baseball is just repeating what she says. Very interesting flaw if true.

I have a lot more to say just need to formulate my thoughts arguments better

forever thinking about how inanimate insanity had to sacrifice the potential test tube and baseball friendship cuz they needed to eliminate test tube :(

my unpopular opinion about the show is that they should’ve had baseball vote for knife instead of test tube in episode 14 cuz it would’ve made more sense for his character arc. he clearly didn’t feel right about it even when he was being pressured in that one scene so I think that having him remain loyal and refuse to go along with it would’ve been the better writing option.

like i get that they needed to keep knife in cuz he’s a finalist and all but i hate that they built up such a sweet friendship in episode 13 only to completely toss it away the very next episode. :((

the second drawing reminded me of the scene when baseball was in a state of shock after his best friend just died right in front of him, and lightbulb tried offering cheesy a controller while the entire hotel was screaming and panicking. that genuinely made me laugh out loud watching it for the first time like lightbulb what were you thinking

this is self-indulgence ok I love detectives but on an actual note maybe lb is the one baseball is talking to after (presumably) seeing taco and mepad? idk it'd be cute if they team up to help them out anyways detectives

ii 15 has been in my head for the past few weeks, and i feel like i need to ramble a little.

the series is great, but i can’t help but feel a little disappointed with how baseball was written. like, the guy made it to the final 3 and his story still doesn’t feel anywhere near complete.

and it really sucks, because in my opinion, he’s one of the most interesting characters: someone who was put on the spot with a leader role, never felt prepared for it, and in the end ending up hurting his team in the long run. and after the fact, when everyone else is moving on and healing, he’s left by himself, the unending guilt continuing to eat away at him, and he needs to find the strength to find some form of inner peace while also taking accountability for those he hurt so that he can become a better person.

What a messy character! And that’s not a bad thing at all! Some of the series best written characters, like taco and nickel, are extremely messy!

YOU CAN DO SO MUCH WITH WHAT WAS DESCRIBED ABOVE!! I sure hope the writers use this character premise to its fullest potential!

Of course they didn’t! Because we need every merge episode to focus on someone else entirely, but we’ll make sure to squeeze in a scene or two with baseball in it! Surely this will create a satisfying character arc!

And maybe it could have, but it doesn’t help when their idea of a character arc is having him have the same “you can’t change what already happened” conversation a billion times but with a different character.

I really think what made baseball not as memorable of a character is that he was never really given a chance at redemption, or even just character growth.

balloon and nickel had an entire season’s worth of character development, suitcase’s story was so beautifully written because it was happening throughout the whole season, lightbulb had an entire episode dedicated to her, and she had little tidbits of development afterwards, fan and test tube had like 2 episodes together, etc.

I think that episode 15 could’ve been a baseball centered episode, but it was mostly about taco. If the challenge were different, maybe we could’ve had both!! my point is, they had plenty of time to do SOMETHING with him, but they never did. Maybe put him in a situation where he’s forced into another leader role! Or put him in a situation where he needs to comfort someone else, instead of the other way around! It’s not that hard to think of something to drive his character with!

unlike most, i don’t think that episode 15 was one of the best the show had to offer. one of the reasons why is because i feel like the eliminations felt rushed.

baseball’s elimination specifically felt really weak, like they were just looking for some reason to get him out of the way. he’s shown extreme remorse, but i don’t think he forgives himself. i don’t think he’s anywhere near moving on from his issues, and it made him feel like a whole bunch of missed potential.

my main gripe is: if nickel, balloon, and taco have gotten redemption arcs, BASEBALL DESERVED ONE TOO!!

im hoping there will be at least have some focus on him in the upcoming movie, though with what we’ve seen before, im not too confident.

just finished watching the new inanimate insanity episode and all i have to say rn is that baseball literally had the most missed potential out of all the characters

i think that sonia has one of the coolest designs in the danganronpa franchise, but all that i wish for is that they would exaggerate her outfit more

like, give my girl some more sparkles, make her skirt and sleeves poofier, let her wear makeup!! and give her a little princess crown, as a treat.
