Say “hi” to Wilson’s Bird-of-paradise (Diphyllodes respublica)! Males of the species are known for their striking yellow capes, crimson backs, turquoise crowns, green breasts, and spiraling tail feathers. In order to attract a mate, a male sets up an “arena,” clearing out leaf litter and other distracting items. Once a female arrives, he engages in a complex courtship display that involves song, dance, and showing off his vibrant colors.

Some more spring migrants from the bottom of a brush pile. An immature White-throated Sparrow (the white bib is not perfectly bright yet), a White-crowned Sparrow and an out-of-focus Brown Thrasher, added because I see them so rarely.

Please enjoy this delightfully ridiculous mating display from a Snowy Egret in peak breeding plumage. That signature gurgling call you can hear at the start of the video is one of my favorite noises in the animal kingdom! This is maybe the best time of year to go birding where I live as the swamps and wetlands are simply electric with activity and life. Everywhere you turn your head there is something remarkable to behold.
