Full article I wrote for the Laney Tower: An all day gathering of activist organizations commenced to “Reimagine” Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy on Jan. 21, in Oakland, CA. Hundreds of people gathered at Frank Ogawa Plaza on the national holiday commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Activities started at sunrise with a Black Panther inspired “People’s Breakfast” and continued with family friendly activities. The fifth annual event was organized by Anti-Police Terror Project of Oakland. The event entailed activities which started at sunrise with a Black Panther inspired “People’s Breakfast” and continued with family and child friendly. By noon, attendees along with various activist groups prepared to march with what Cat Brooks of APTP called “The People’s March.” The program continued with activities and a concert until 5:00 pm. Following the concert, Lead to Life performed a string of rituals and ceremonies meant to symbolize an end of gun violence. The non-profit organizations website called the event “Reimaging violence: A Guns to Shovels Ceremony.” Liz Kennedy of the nonprofit described the groups purpose to melt down guns and turn them into shovels as symbolism to stop all forms of gun violence. The guns symbolize death, and the shovels symbolize planting life. Yesterday I went to the Women’s March to do a “pop-up teach-in” with a group of amazing women from The Poor People’s Campaign at Laney. I’ve been going to their meetings (there are men involved as well) and it’s one of the best organizing learning experiences. Some of the people mentoring me have been involved with civil rights movements since the 60s. Now they are teaching me to be a leader. This is the first time I could make sense of what I’m trying to say and express.
