Western express highway is supposed to be empty. Only it's not. Traffic at this hour. Well, okay. Time in a bottle. Jim Croce.

An open back tempo in front of my auto on the next lane lit up by the headlights of tailing vehicles. Worker guy on it. Staring right at me. My eyes drift to meet his and we share a 2 second look down. Then I put up the pretence of being a baddie and screw my face and look away.

The innova next to me on the other side has four people in it all looking down at their phones. There's an iPad too. (The worker has now turned away stretching to get something and I am looking at his stretched skin and softly poking ribs(he's quite fit) thinking- he's like any other man. Like I am like any other woman. Human being wise )

I want to stare loud enough at the Innova guys to not have to say a word. But they never look at me.

Disappointed, I get an olfactory shock when the moving lane on the other side of my auto slaps me with the fragrance of.. something fresh out of bath. Maybe a man. 40-50s. Could be simple 35 yo too.

The traffic is untimely. These things happen.

I have known these stairs since I was a little girl. These stairs have been here since my mother was a little girl and even before that. I have whizzed up and down them, slipped down them all the way to the bottom laughing and crying, limping and hopping with a beaten blue bum. Years have gone by and these stairs have stayed put where they are, a play mate for generations, staying young over the years, the way to where you could see the stars once. Most of the time I have forgotten about them. Sometimes I dream about them taking me to a place where my heart will finally stop to yearn. Today I saw them after years and with the fresh batch of kids around me, felt nostalgic and old.

Prepping. It takes these guys 3-4 hours to finish the make up which is an integral part of Kathakali, done in various stages. Followed by elaborate costuming.
