Edison Anticipates 'Material Losses' From Thomas Fire
Edison International on Tuesday revealed that an internal investigation found that its Southern California Edison utility equipment was “associated with” one of the ignition points of the massive Thomas Fire last December and that as a result, the company expects “to incur material losses” in connection with the fire.
The revelation was made in the Rosemead company’s quarterly earnings filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission and a simultaneously released statement from the company. Edison International Chief Executive Pedro Pizarro also elaborated on the finding in an earnings conference call with investors, stating for the first time that the company expects to incur material losses from the fire.
The Thomas Fire burned nearly 282,000 acres (440 square miles) last December and January in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, an area almost the size of the city of Los Angeles. It destroyed 1,063 structures and damaged roughly 250 more. It was at the time the largest fire by acreage in state history; but that record was eclipsed this summer by the Mendocino Complex fire in Northern California.
In a review this past spring, Fitch Ratings Service determined that Southern California Edison could face more than $4 billion in possible damages from the Thomas Fire. Edison International reported net income of $689 million last year on revenue of $12.3 billion.
In the Oct. 30 statement, Edison said its internal investigation found an ignition point near Koenigstein Road in Santa Paula was in close proximity to one of its power poles. But because the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection removed the Edison equipment for its own investigation, the company was not able to inspect it and therefore could not determine whether the equipment actually caused the ignition.
Meanwhile, Edison state that its equipment was near another suspected ignition point in the Anlauf Canyon area of Ventura County, but could not determine whether that equipment was associated with that ignition point.
Pizarro said in the earnings conference call that because of the multiple ignition points and the “potential for separate damages to be attributable to fires ignited at separate ignition points, we are currently unable to reasonably estimate a range of losses that may be incurred. However, we do expect to incur material losses in connection with the Thomas Fire.”
In a question-and-answer session with analysts, he added that Edison is continuing to receive fire damage claims.
In the earnings report, Edison reported third quarter earnings per share of $1.56, up from $1.44 a year earlier and beating analyst estimates by 30 cents, according to website Seeking Alpha. Edison reported revenue of $4.26 billion, up 17 percent from 3.65 billion a year earlier and beating analyst estimates by $640 million, again according to Seeking Alpha.

Stalled since 2014, Hollywood Target can resume construction
A years-long legal fight to halt the Hollywood Target appears to have ended, and Target and the city of Los Angeles have come out on top.
Target confirmed today that it would resume construction on the partially built big-box store at Sunset and Western, colloquially known as “the Target Husk.”
It did not say when work would begin again, but it’s in the clear following the California Supreme Court’s decision earlier this month not to hear an appeal brought by the La Mirada Neighborhood Association.
The group has accused the city of not fully considering the impacts of new zoning rules that allow taller buildings, including the 74-foot-tall Hollywood Target, to be built.
Los Angeles City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell called the decision “a gift for the community just in time for the holidays.”
“Now we can end the blight at this intersection and provide hundreds of jobs and amenities for local residents,” he said.
O’Farrell also noted that his office and Target can now resume talks about “a jobs program for formerly homeless youth” living at the nearby Covenant House.
The fight for the Target began in 2012, when the the La Mirada Neighborhood Association and their lawyer Robert Silverstein sued the city for building a 74-foot-tall Target on a site where building heights were supposed to be capped at 35 feet tall.
Two years later, a judge sided with La Mirada. Construction on the development stopped, and the sad Target skeleton that sits at the busy corner was created.
In 2016, the Los Angeles City Council, trying to remedy the height discrepancy, decided to alter height limits for projects in a segment of Hollywood that included the Target project site.
The move made the building’s height permissible, but the La Mirada group disagreed, suing again successfully. However, an August court of appeals ruling reversed that decision and this month’s Supreme Court decision affirmed that the city’s height changes could stand, and work on the Target could begin again.
A Target representative told Curbed that the company was “very pleased” with the outcome of the legal battle.

Decision about Bangladesh Accord further stalled
As FashionUnited reported a week ago, a restraining order by the government of Bangladesh has been placed on the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh (Accord), which was due to take effect on 30th November, then 6th December and now 17th December. In other words, the future of the Bangladesh Accord is still in limbo.
In the government’s submission to the High Court regarding the Accord’s appeal against an order that it cease operating in Bangladesh from 30th November, it has stated that the Accord should only be allowed to continue operations in Bangladesh under a set of highly obstructive constraints, which would strip the globally-respected safety initiative of its ability to operate independently of government and employer control. The constraints include that this will be the last extension allowed to the Accord maintaining its office in Dhaka.
Specifically, this would mean subjecting all Accord decisions to the approval of a government committee, preventing the Accord from taking any action against factory owners who threaten or fire workers for raising safety complaints, and prohibiting Accord inspectors from identifying any new safety violations, “effectively requiring them to ignore deadly hazards found during their inspections, such as faulty alarm systems, blocked fire exits, and cracks in structural columns,” as the Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC) summed up yesterday in a press release, ultimately destroying the Accord’s independence.
At a hearing on 6th December where the Accord’s response to the constraints on its operations was tabled, the government of Bangladesh requested another hearing on 10th December to allow time to consider the response. Yesterday, the government has requested, and been granted, a further delay until 17th December. That means with no clear direction that the future of the Accord continues to hang in the balance and in the meantime, its representatives’ hands are being tied and unable to act.
Thus, the global union signatories to the Accord – IndustriALL and UNI – and the four witness signatories – Clean Clothes Campaign, International Labor Rights Forum, Maquila Solidarity Network, and Worker Rights Consortium – call on Bangladesh’s trading partners and global apparel brands to press the government of Bangladesh to refrain from imposing these shocking impediments to the Accord continuing its life-saving work.
As much as it is understandable that the government of Bangladesh would like to gain full control over how the factories that create 80 percent of the country’s export goods are run and inspected, it is also clear that this can only happen when workers’ safety and building and fire safety can be guaranteed. And this is not the case with the proposed solution, namely the government’s Remediation and Coordination Cell (RCC) taking over all responsibilities.
“The Accord has long committed to handing over its functions to a suitable national regulatory body, however the government’s RCC is still in an early stage of development. There is broad consensus among stakeholders, including the International Labour Organization (ILO), Bangladesh’s major trading partners, and brands, that the RCC is not yet ready to perform the inspection tasks of the Accord and has no proven record of enforcing safety in the factories under its purview,” explains CCC in its press release.
Knowing this, the Accord has already proposed a solution: “The Accord is committed to building up the capacity of the RCC and to cooperation with the government and its inspection bodies to ensure a smooth transition. It has already submitted a plan of how this can be done, but the government has so far failed to comment on it”.
“A genuine transition plan for factory inspections, safety trainings, and a worker complaint mechanism will need much more time and genuine engagement by the government. It will not be possible unless the Accord is able to continue its operations without restriction. The Accord is a private contract that will remain binding upon the signatory brands until 2021, or until the RCC is demonstrably ready,” concludes the CCC.
It remains to be seen if stalling will be the method employed by the government of Bangladesh or if on 17th December, the Bangladesh Accord will be able to move ahead, whatever the decision may be.

Get a glimpse of Jessica Alba’s serene family home in the 90210
When Jessica Alba and her husband Cash Warren bought a new house in the Beverly Hills Post Office neighborhood, which bears that famed 90210 zip code, she thought that all she’d need to do was paint.
As is often the case, she told Architectural Digest, that renovation quickly turned into an 18-month production. As part of the process, the original floor plan was altered to improve the flow of the common areas, and they “blew out the back of the house” to make room for an accordion-style folding glass door.
They called in a highly recommended team to decorate—Kathleen and Tommy Clements, who decorated Ellen Degeneres and Portia de Rossi’s Beverly Hills house. (“They’d have us over for holiday parties, and we’d leave and say to each other, ‘Their house is so sick!’ Alba says.)
The house, which is a soothing mixture of grays, taupes, wood, and marble, is a full-on family home, with a play set in the expansive backyard. “We wanted a place to watch our kids play and grow up,” Alba says.
Read more about Alba’s home in Architectural Digest.

Review: Sandra Oh's 'I see you' at the Golden Globes marks a real turning point
And that’s exactly what happened during the three-hour-plus ceremony, where the audience was a reflection of the shifting tectonics in both television and film. The camera panned across the banquet room’s dining tables, showing the cast and/or creators of “Black Panther,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Roma,” “Killing Eve,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and “Pose” — all productions focused on groups previously sidelined, or entirely overlooked, by mainstream Hollywood and TV.

Housing Committee Advances Plan for Low-Income Development Behind Westlake Theatre
The L.A. City Council's Housing Committee has voted to move forward with plans to building affordable housing on behind the Westlake Theatre.
On June 26, the committee approved a staff recommendation from the Housing and Community Investment Department to begin negotiating the sale of a city-owned property at 619-633 S. Westlake Avenue to the Cesar Chavez Foundation, which intends to construct an affordable and permanent supportive housing project on the land.
Per a staff report to the Housing Committee, the project is imagined as a 77-unit development - featuring one-, two-, and three-bedroom dwellings - priced for households earning at or below 30 and 60 percent of the area median income.  Plans call for 39 residential units to be reserved as permanent supportive housing for homeless households.  The project, in accordance with the Tier IV incentives of the Transit Oriented Communities guidelines, would not include parking.
LOHA is designing the proposed development, which is depicted as a contemporary five-story edifice.  The design concept was "based on a set of building blocks," stacked to provide a semi-public park space at the center of the property.  Other project features would include a community kitchen, a tot lot, a central laundry facility, music practice rooms, a dance studio, and visual arts space.
The project would cost approximately $47 million, according to an application by the Cesar Chavez Foundation for Measure HHH funds.  The developer is seeking $4.2 million in HHH dollars, and would obtain the remaining balance from other sources.
The full City Council is scheduled to consider the item on July 3.

Spyder makes a comeback during Milan Fashion Week: Men's
Kristopher Fraser
|
Wednesday, January 16 2019
Men's luxury brand Spyder has made a triumphant return to Milan Fashion Week: Men's this season under the guide of new creative director Christopher Bevans. Bevans was formerly the designer for music superstars Kanye West and Pharrell. With hip-hop's continued influence on fashion, Bevans was an excellent choice to usher Spyder into a new era.
For his first collection for the brand Bevans fused the worlds of urban active and athletic wear to create a collection fit for both sports enthusiasts and metropolitan trendsetters. Comfort and efficiency were the end goals of the training lineup, although style was not forsaken. A range of fabrics were used to create different textures and tactile effects highlighting the functional ergonomic cuts of performance T-shirts, leggings, hoodies, vests and windbreakers, with every design to be mixed and matched for a cool layered look.
The running outfits were done in chameleon color gradation and reflective abstract prints to give a distinctive, striking look to Spyder's intriguing running outfits. As fashion and tech also begin to intersect, the running outfits also incorporate high-tech body mapping to check temperature before and after a run.
Bevans bids for the customers riding on nineties nostalgia was evident with the range of tracksuits, fleece sweatshirts and oversized puffers embellished with bold color blocking and geometric patchwork. The pieces echoed the vibe of the MTV generation, which contrasted with the futuristic vibe of the high-tech garments.
The looks were completed with accessories developed by Peter Brunsberg, the founder and creative director of Berlin-based label Bagjack. The highly practical city styles, showing a minimal, high-tech design, include multi pocket crossbody bags, backpacks and fanny packs worked in graphic color combinations and embellished with decorative applications in the shape of the iconic Spyder logo.

24-Story Residential Tower Planned in City West
A collection of small industrial buildings in City West could be redeveloped with an apartment tower, according to an application submitted yesterday to the Los Angeles Department of City Planning.
The project site, located at 1240-1262 W. 2nd Street, is currently improved with four single-story structures built between 1902 and 1961, as well as associated parking.  The filing made yesterday with the City of Los Angeles calls for razing these buildings to make way for the construction of a 24-story tower that would feature 335 residential units.
Proposed entitlements included Transit Oriented Communities incentives, with requests for reduced parking and increased density in exchange for setting aside some units as affordable housing.
The project's case filing lists its applicant as architect Tony Ashai of Ashai Design Consulting Corporation.
Property records list the owner of the approximately 32,300-square-foot site as a series of entities affiliated with individuals named Robert and Julie Freeman.
The proposed tower joins a handful of high-rise apartment buildings planned west of the Harbor Freeway, most of which are congregated between 7th Street and Wilshire Boulevard.  However, none of these projects have started construction.
1240-1262 W. 2nd Street would also be the second high-rise development planned with TOC incentives, following the proposed "Soul" apartment tower in Koreatown.

Leaving the front door open: Millions of mortgage docs exposed online
Leaving the front door open: Millions of mortgage docs exposed online
Citi, Wells Fargo, and HUD among institutions affected by leak of highly sensitive info
(Credit: Pixabay)
A giant cache of 24 million documents from credit and mortgage reports was exposed online for about two weeks, according to a TechCrunch report posted Wednesday.
Because it was not protected with a password, the 51 GB database was available for anyone to access and read. The data included sensitive personal information used for credit checks, from social security numbers and bank accounts to W-2 forms and bankruptcy filing information.
“This information would be a gold mine for cyber criminals who would have everything they need to steal identities, file false tax returns, get loans or credit cards,” said Bob Diachenko, the independent security researcher who first discovered the database.
The documents, some dating as far back as 2008, came from major financial institutions such as Citigroup, HSBC, Wells Fargo, and CapitalOne, as well as the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which insures mortgages via the Federal Housing Administration.
Diachenko and TechCrunch traced the leak to the data and analytics company Ascension, based in Fort Worth, Texas. Among other services, Ascension converts scanned paper documents into machine-readable text, which was the kind of data stored in the compromised database.
In addition to enabling identity theft and fraud, the lack of password protection could have allowed cybercriminals to install malicious software on the database servers. A spokesperson for Ascension’s parent company, Rocktop Partners, said its systems were not impacted. The database was shut down on January 15.
Citi and Wells Fargo both said that they had no direct relationship with the company and that their data was obtained by Ascension via third parties that had purchased their loans. The HUD, currently affected by the government shutdown, was unavailable for comment.
Elasticsearch, the technology underlying the Ascension database, has been involved in several security lapses in recent months. Leaked data has included SMS messages, internship applications, and employee complaints about clients of a massage-booking service. [TechCrunch] — Kevin Sun

Saying goodbye to the Nation
Just under four years ago, I started my first day working at Nation HQ as a part-time intern. The day was just five days away from when the Edmonton Oilers would select Connor McDavid first overall in the NHL entry draft, and our lives would change forever.
A month into my internship with Oilersnation I was tasked to write an essay introducing myself to the Nation, and about why I think I make a good intern. (We’ll get to that essay a little bit later.) But now, I am writing my goodbye to the Nation, as today will be my final day working at Nation HQ. After years of cheering, crying, and laughing over the Oilers from inside the walls of the Little Brick Cafe, I will be taking some time to explore a different career opportunity, while growing my skills and experience in the marketing industry.
Even though I will no longer be working in Nation HQ, this isn’t a goodbye forever. I will always be The Nation Chris and no one can stop me. You will still see me around this site giving my occasional hot take and booing The Nation Dan. You will even see me at the occasional Nation party and event, so there’s no need to be sad.
For those of you wondering, yes I eventually began working full-time with the Nation and graduated from my internship. I stopped having to pickup Baggedmilk’s daily coffees and clean Wanye’s car, even though my intern title ended up sticking around forever. In my time with Oilersnation, I had the opportunity to participate in a ton of fun activities and trips. In fact, Wanye tasked me with recapping some of my favourite memories with the Nation. So here goes nothing!
As I alluded to earlier, my first five days as an intern was something I was never expecting happen the way it did. It was an action-packed week as I jumped right into the thick of things while preparing for the Connor McDavid draft party, which to-date, was our biggest party in Nation history. The five days was a fast-track lesson to learn all about the Nation and the processes involved. Usually, it would take a person months or years to meet all of the fine Nation Citizens. However, I’m pretty sure I met 80% of you all at the Draft Party that week.
The week involved everything from taking photos of the vandalized “Connor [McDavid]Road” sign in Edmonton, dumping multiple beers on myself for the Kokanee promo team (I can’t find any video for this, thank god), building shelves, hanging blinds, walking dogs, kissing babies, giving arena updates, and much more. The week ended with the draft party which completed my initiation. Sometime late into the night, apparently I got cocky and agreed to write a 500-word essay about why I’m a great intern. After a lengthy delay, I finally got around to writing it. The essay was my first taste at receiving some online criticism, and I quickly knew that the Nation and myself were going to grow into a beautiful relationship.
One aspect of Oilersnation that we’re continuously aiming to grow is our travel ventures. Our goal is to bring as many Nation Citizens around the world with us to follow the Oilers, and we’re well on our way to doing it.
Initially, we started out with a few smaller trips. The Nation began hosting a couple of ski trips to the mountains. Then we stepped it up by bringing a handful of Oilers fans to Winnipeg for the Heritage Classic. Once we started to figure out what we were doing, things began to roll with a handful of trips to Calgary to watch some Battle of Alberta games. Then, the big one happened.
Something I never thought would happen unfolded right before my eyes. We loaded a plane with Oilersnation fans and flew them all out to Las Vegas to watch the team play earlier this year. This was an unforgettable experience, and I had the time of my life.
Even though I haven’t travelled a lot in my life, it is something I love to do. What Oilersnation is trying to do by bringing fans together across multiple countries is amazing, and I highly encourage you to tag along on an upcoming trip if you haven’t done so yet. Following the team you love to different cities is something I never really saw myself doing in my lifetime, however, it has quickly become one of my favourite hobbies.
As you may know, we do a lot of random things out of Nation HQ to try to produce some entertaining content for you all. These random things include printing out a cutout of myself and taking pictures with it around the city for prizes and wearing a turkey hat after every team loss. (better yet, eating a can of beets or wearing shorts non-stop). Something that I can’t forget to mention is also being a part of the Nation during the Oilers 2017 playoff run… what a ride!
This city's the best, last night was the greatest, and we want the cup! #MISSION17 #oilers #yeg pic.twitter.com/MKQa3KbQoG
— Chris (@TheNationChris) April 29, 2017
We always had something goofy going on and I’m really going to miss that aspect of the job. I look forward to the many future wacky things the team in Nation HQ cook up.
There you have it. There are a ton more memories and experiences I could go into detail about, however, you need to get back to work and can’t spend ALL day reading my article. I want to thank all of the readers of this site and all of the Oilersnation followers on social media for opening up a world for me that I’ve never been a part of before. The Internet can be cruel at times, but in reality, we are all one big family striving for one goal: to watch Connor McDavid hoist the Stanley Cup over his shoulders at Rogers Place. It’s going to happen one day, and we’re all going to be together for it, whether it be in-person or online. The Oilersnation online community is something like no other, and I’m glad to be a part of it now and in the future.
I also wanted to thank The Nation Network ownership, management, and my every-day coworkers who I worked alongside these past four years. This was an opportunity of a lifetime and I’ll never forget the values, skills, and experience I’ve gained during my time here.

Raptors parade trophy through Toronto, uncertainty lingers
Two weeks from now, the Toronto Raptors' roster might look as different as Danny Green's combed-out mohawk with looming decisions from Kawhi Leonard, Marc Gasol and Green that brought an air of uncertainty to Monday's street party in Ontario.
As the Raptors gathered with mobs of fans Monday to celebrate their NBA championship, the next chapter for the Raptors will be on hold as a series of decisions that shape the future of the franchise are made.
Leonard will opt out of the final year of his contract to become a free agent. The Raptors expected this bit of paperwork even before Leonard was acquired from the San Antonio Spurs last summer. What they won't know until at least June 30 is whether Leonard ever will wear a Toronto uniform again.
The Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls and others are known to have serious interest in signing Leonard. Of course, the Raptors hope he will choose to stay put after carrying the franchise to its first title.
"I don't think there's any other player of his caliber right now in the NBA,'' Gasol said. "He's on a pedestal by himself.''
Gasol also has a player option he could decline. If Leonard leaves, the exodus behind him could be devastating.
"Let's not be foolish,'' said Green, whose tightly wound mohawk was unfurled for Monday's festivities with the top of the hairline about seven feet off the ground. "His decision affects a lot of guys' decisions. He can change a whole organization.''
Leonard's words following the Finals-clinching win at Golden State are being analyzed, parsed and recycled in Toronto, where fans are hopeful he'll be back.
In an interview last week that took place after the Raptors celebrated with beer and champagne in the locker room, Leonard said the victory was something "the Raptors can build on."
Some took the separation of Leonard from the Raptors as a sign he's as good as gone, likely to his home state of California and the Clippers.
Raptors head coach Nick Nurse said everyone is guessing at this point, and he's not even sure Leonard knows where he'll play in 2019-20.
"I don't really know,'' Nurse said. "I know he's got to make a decision here really soon, couple of weeks. I think he had a good season and people like him here, and we can give him a good deal.''
