for the non-Americans who are very confused right now:
Everyone hates The Chiefs this year because it's quarterback Patrick Mahomes is low-key MAGA and the orange pestilence is in attendance in the game. And the racist ass "chop" their fans do. and that Traves Kelce said it would be "an honor" to host the orange pestilence at the game.
and now they're fucking losing and Taylor is going to DUMP him and join Kendrick in writing an absolutely devastating breakup anthem.

im not even the type of guy to go "actually it's frankenstein's MONSTER" because a painting by rembrandt or picasso or any other artist is often called "a rembrandt" or "a picasso" as shorthand. so in this respect frankenstein's monster can be considered "a frankenstein"

Reblogging because route witches and ambulomancers were the inspiration for an entire goddamn LARP I decided to write now.
Your askbox is full of compliments and I wanted to add to it- the concept of routewitches and the magic of an american has utterly enchanted me! I'm obsessed. You've contributed much more than you know to some random nerds game of urban shadows!
That will be my true legacy.  Hundreds of gaming tables incorporating thousands of pages of fiction.
I WILL BE REMEMBERED!

The historical flair in the Hamilton costumes
OK, so here’s the deal. Basically every week I get a request in my inbox to do an analysis on the Hamilton costumes, or talk about how historically correct they are, or discuss specific details. And I’ve always avoided this, because it feels out of my league. I’m one of the five people in the Western world who’s not yet seen Hamilton (…!), and I only have brief knowledge of the visuals. But the questions don’t stop anyway. So I’d thought I’d do a photoset, and refer to this for all eternity… But I also wanna add that while I did the research myself here, most of my general knowledge for these costumes comes from @viscountess, who’s made lots of Hamilton photosets throughout the years. So be sure to check her site as well!
Costume designer Paul Tazewell has listed multiple inspirations for the design. From an interview with Chicago Tribune it’s described that the show’s main principle was “Period from the neck down and modern from the neck up; and strip away all the embroidered detail of the 18th century”. He furthermore used colours to envoke specific emotions; cool icy shades for Eliza, solar hues for Angelica, “money green” for Hamilton at the opening of act two, and purple for Jefferson in act two to tie him to Prince and Jimi Hendrix and thus underline his “rock star status”.
In the words of the journalist, the designer also “…researched the 18th-century paintings of John Trumbull as well as the mashup fashions of Alexander McQueen, John Galliano and Jean Paul Gaultier and the satiric portraits of Kehinde Wiley, who depicted men and women of color in re-creations of classic portraits”.
To my eye it looks like the designer has taken the essence of historical styles, and made them clearer and sharper as they are paired with modern details. The historical references are very clear, and seldom messed with so they loose their purpose, but he has not created museum pieces. Which is a hard combination to get right. Two museum collections that seems to have been of particular interest is The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Kyoto Costume Institute in Japan (the latter due to their legendary “Fashion” book, which has become a main resource for many a designer).
I’m not saying the list underneath is THE inspiration for the designer. But it shows that the general style he went for reminds of specific sources and extant garments.
Row 1: Robe à l’anglaise, c. 1790, English, from The Kyoto Costume Institute VS the zone-front dress worn by Angelica Schuyler (here: Emmy Raver-Lampman in the National Tour) (and to be fair, it would also work as the inspiration for Eliza’s mint/teal dress)
Row 2: Riding coat and embroidered vest, c. 1790, Musée de Tissus, Lyon (via here), VS an attire worn by Angelica Schuyler’s travel attire in “Take a Break” (here: Renée Elise Goldsberry on Broadway).
Row 3: Spencer, British, c. 1820 (from The Met) VS a spencer jacket work in “Quiet Uptown” by an ensemble member. This is from a display at The Paramount Hotel in NYC, and was found via Viscountess.
Row 4: “Washington, Lafayette, and Tilghman at Yorktown”, painted by Charles Willson Peale, 1784 (Maryland Historical Society, via here) VS the uniform Hamilton is seen wearing in the show (here: Lin-Manuel Miranda on Broadway)
Row 5: Prince at the “Purple Rain” cover from 1984 VS Jefferson in the second act (here: Daveed Diggs on Broadway). According to the designer: “The purple on Jefferson emphasized his rock star status. I was channeling Jimi Hendrix and Prince, which seemed appropriate for Daveed’s own performance style and dramatic hair” (via Playbill).

There’s apparently a new one out now. I only know because as soon as I got used to the ugly breastplate xray thing on audible- a more badass one took her place:

Squire (Tamora Pierce)

Once again, my childhood set actually deserves its top spot ranking for being the only cover to show just how badass Kel can be.  Touseled hair, dirt smudge, unbuttoned collar, and the determined glint in her eye - all perfect. #Flawless. #iwokeuplikethis
Complaints: could have a better background. She looks like Mary freakin Poppins hangin on her cloud.

The Danes are back in action with this vivid cover. Love the centaur-guy actualy kicking her in the head - that’s a pretty brutal moment to show on the cover, but it’s definitely compelling. The real reason this cover wins is because of the baby griffin perched on top of the title, like that M looks like a tasty snack.
Complaints: These German-fairytale-inspired illustrations never were as compelling for me as they might’ve been for a less-character-more-action oriented reader. Plus the crazy snakevines are back, only this time they’re eating her bow and arrow.

Inoffensive, but a little boring. Enjoying the expression on the baby griffin’s face, and the background is a little better than the first one - at least she’s on the ground.
Complaints: That haircut. That yikes-we’ll-be-wearing-a-hat-for-the-rest-of-kindergarten haircut.

Oh, Delias. For those of you who haven’t seen before, Delias is a reference to this particular aesthetic style, which correlates to the branding of a tween clothing catalog in the US in the 90s. At least here she’s holding a weapon with some of her characteristic determination.
Complaints: clearly she’s come from holding Belle-from-Beauty-and-the-Beast at spearpoint. “What do you want? I’m already being held hostage and forced to endure a cadre of singing flatware!” “The dress, girlie. Give me your dress and no one gets hurt.”
Can we also agree that Jump looks like a cat?

oh. my.  Um, let’s give this one credit for a nice, kicky title font.
Complaints: This isn’t a warrior in training, this is the Unconventional Materials challenge from Project Runway, and Kel is wearing lingerie made out of aluminum siding. Or it’s the Breastplate Challenge: Red Carpet-Ready Armor.
