final overview
lydia: i love how these songs are all like bite sized pieces. it feels like a 8 course tasting menu with the same flavors but used in different ways and a different subject matter. but it goes from very soft and delicate to less diluted near the end, more out going, more pop as the final draws near.
isabel: listening to this album has been a very new experience for me! This genre of music is not one I typically listen to and I found joy in listening to something different. The album was short and sweet and included aspects from many different genres. You can tell Fike played around a lot with his vocals throughout the album, and it creates some interesting contrast and entertaining audio. The album started quiet and less intense in the beginning, and the energy soon ramped up to create a lighter, bouncier feel leaning into pop. I’d say my favourites are bowie box and to say to say. note: you can find this album on spotify or in this lovely youtube playlist linked here thanx so much for reading!

8. coast2coast
lydia: fast paced bop song. i like this one.
isabel: a very upbeat, exciting sound, like the name suggests, it sounds like something you’d listen to at the beach. there’s a change in vocal style from more singing to rapping, with the voice beginning as little more monotone and then breaking into melodies. it’s short and sweet.

7. to say to say
lydia: i like this song the most by far. the guitar is good. the random guitar breaks make it feel like looking back on a memory.
isabel: has a kind of jangly feel the the guitar which i enjoy. the vocal distortion is a little bit different to that which we’ve heard earlier in the album, but it fits with the song a lot better than the vocals in hi grace in my opinion. the guitar is also layered, creating an interesting combination of sounds. great bassline, another one of my favourites. it breaks down from about 1:00, where the energy drops.

6. misses
lydia: sounds like brazil in a way (the song). this is totally a summer coded song.
isabel: a noticeably happier song with a nice bassline, i like that! i’ve definitely heard this on reels etc. and if you use that kind of thing, you’ve probably heard it too! cool, short tune.

5. bowie box
lydia: the melody and guitar sounds like a beabadoobee song. i think a vibe change from the last four songs but in a good way.
isabel: the guitar style is mournful and different from what we’ve seen so far. given the title and style right off the bat, it’s evident that Fike took inspiration from David Bowie. i have to say, this is probably my favourite song on this album so far. love the combo of electric+acoustic.

4. THICKRICK
lydia: song about having matching trauma with someone? i like this vibe too. its giving a cabin out in cali. the vibe so far is very continuous and symmetrical.
isabel: this song’s vocals continue with the techno distortion, with that bleeding into the instruments as the song goes on. around halfway through, the distortion disappears and everything becomes much ‘cleaner’ sounding.

3. 1.23.23
lydia: matches the vibe of the prior song. very cool kickdrums and telephone filter vocals. feels like im having a coffee at 8am in the morning in my condo.
isabel: the song comes across as much warmer and brighter than the previous two songs, beginning with a very light, layered guitar before the vocals kick in. it has a very relaxed, loose feel to it.

2. hi grace
lydia: i vibe w this song but why does his vocals sound so sped up, not even in a yas nightcore way but in a awkward mistimed song way.
isabel: the piano is the most noticeable part of hi grace, it keeps the listener interested. the song comes across much stronger than megaman and much more audibly “heavy”. Fike distorts the vocals with a very electro, technologic feel to it, contrasting the smoother piano. snare-heavy drums undercut the piano and vocals. the vocals are more complete and intelligible when compared to megaman. it’s a smooth listen, with lots of interesting audio choices to focus on. the piano bears a resemblance to John Lennon’s Imagine.

1. megaman
lydia: okay it was a short and nice bite into the album, almost like an appetiser—i really like the simple guitar and drum, it compliments the loose vocals very much. short and digestible.
isabel: it was a relatively simple intro to the album. not anything too complicated or heavy, the quiet, floaty vocals and harmonic ‘phrases’ of notes from the guitar keep the song light and easy to listen to.
