the stretchy underwear scene, tinted glasses, and their relevance to holograms alongside Chester V’s solipsism: a dumb little analysis 

okay hear me out!! i just wanted the very silly title to catch your eye; i’d like to talk about the scene from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 wherein Flint Lockwood and Chester V are doing some bungee jumping from their hyper-elastic underwear, and what i think this tells us about Chester V’s psychology and design. content warnings for trauma and childhood bullying.

Chester V initially comes onto the scene as a figure who is a blend between Bill Nye and Mr Rogers: an inspiration to kids all over the world, encouraging them and letting them know that they can do anything. yet this façade is quickly dropped to reveal a man who is self-obsessed to the point of solipsism. despite his apparent wealth and success, Chester surrounds himself not with the company of all the brilliant inventors who would love to work with him (such as Flint), but instead a small cohort of obedient Thinkquanauts who amount to toadying yesmen, his science ‘partner’ Barb whose intelligence he frequently disrespects, and an army of his own holograms which he cannot physically interact with. in fact, Chester is so egotistical that he refuses to even acknowledge Barb’s true species.

Production on Cloudy 2 is done! It’s in post-production now, getting everything ready for the release on September 27.

In the meantime, here’s three very different pieces that I created very early on in the development process when I was still figuring out the look of the film.

In the top image, you can see that my first impressions of a town destroyed by gigantic falling food were way too bleak for the tone of the story, bordering on post-apocalyptic.

In the two bottom images, I veered toward a much more vibrant, more designed, and more storybook quality in my illustrations that lent itself much better to the tone the Directors wanted.

From there, I developed many more images in much more detail to get us to the final look.

I’m really happy with the way the look of the film turned out, and I am so thankful for all of the amazing artists/friends that contributed to the 2D and 3D Visual Development process. I’m happy that you’ll be able to see a ton of their beautiful work in the “Art Of” book that will be hitting stores on September 24, just before the movie.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 Fun Fact: The layout team built 3.58 miles of San Franjose, including 458 buildings, 137 trees, 64 cars, 20 dumpsters, 113 street lights, 70 newspaper stands, and 1,122 feet of railing.
