Holiday reading in the house! * We have many traditions for the holiday season, from baking cookies, matching pajamas and choosing the book to focus on over the holidays. It’s fine because during the long break we can all binge our books, dog deep into the topics, find podcasts and look up supporting articles and interviews. * 2020 has us focusing on our (#Black) family. We’ve read @michelleobama ‘s book, and now we’re reading Volume I of @barackobama ‘s presidential Memoir: A Promised Land. * Mac is a great reader. One thing we do to support his reading comprehension is re-reading books. #mcm is my husband @dc226 🥰 DC is not often on social media but occasionally he pops up on my feed to discuss books. @tlcbooktours and I are discussing A Dream Too Big by @caylinlmoore and I thought about my own husband’s journey. There are a lot reasons my husband shouldn’t be where he is. Systemic racism, a school system that didn’t value him as a Black boy learning, a justice system that lacks empathy, and the wealth gap are all roadblocks to growing up Black in America. So when you hear about a Black person being able to afford groceries and walk their child to school - count those as victories in a place that was never meant for them. And when you hear how @caylinlmoore overcame his obstacles using the roadblocks as stepping stones to success - don’t call him exceptional. Don’t use his story as an example of someone who studied hard and stayed straight . Don’t say that if you just pull yourself up by your bootstraps you can be just like him. No - Caylin’s story is one of praying ancestors. His story is a reminder that We can do anything when given a chance. His story is a reminder of the handicaps society places on Our people and then expects us to live normally while treating us abnormally. @caylinlmoore is every little Black boy with a dream much too big for the box society puts us in. And yet here is He is today ... here is DC today... and here is every Black man that is hustling each day to provide. It’s #nationalbookloversday ! It’s too hard to ask me for my favorite book, but I’ll share a few of the ones I re-read! * 1. Sassafras, Cypress and Indigo by #NtozakeShange “Where there is a woman there is magic. If there is a moon falling from her mouth, she is a woman who knows her magic, who can share or not share her powers. A woman with a moon falling from her mouth, roses between her legs and tiaras of Spanish moss, this woman is a consort of the spirits.” * 2. A Discovery of Witches by @debharkness (#allsoulstrilogy) is a series I read every fall. And it was just announced that Season 2 of @adiscoveryofwitchestv will be out in Jan 2021! * 3. I love by #ACOTAR AND #TOG by @therealsjmaas ... by Empire of Storms in the Throne of Glass series holds a special place for me! * 4. New favorite is Justina Ireland’s alternate history #zombie #dystopian series #DreadNatiom 5. @professor_crunk Eloquent Rage is a book I re-read and quote tooooo often. Check out her TED talks. This book helped me embrace my Black Feminism * 5. How to be Antiracist by @ibramxk ... Stamped garnered a lot of attention, but this book is pure gold. Day 22 on the #blackresiliencebookstatour hosted by @prettylittlebookshelf! Book 📚to Movie🎥 * I actually planned to feature another book to movie adaptation choice; but honestly, I needed something light hearted and switched my choice to the incredibly funny @trevornoah for midweek date-night with hubby. Of course, you can catch Trevor on @thedailyshow for social and political commentary with a medicinal dose of humor as well as on several other comedy specials. I believe the movie for Born A Crime is still forthcoming, but his current comedy special - Son of Patricia is out now and incredibly funny. I really enjoyed his book and highly recommend it on audiobook. Each chapter presents like a comedy sketch with a funny intro, the tale and a punchline that drives each story home. He talks about tragedy, hardship and culture in a way that connects black people across the diaspora while still sharing his unique experiences as a biracial child during apartheid South Africa. My favorite story is about his blind grandma! I won’t spoil it for you, but just know that it’s very important to pray the stink away🤣🤣🤣 * QOTD: What’s the funniest thing (in retrospect) you have prayed for?
