On Trump
I don’t really post much serious stuff. But this is something that means a lot to me. If you disagree with my methodology, please tell me why. I am posting this both to get my feelings out and as a hopeful opportunity to learn.
My grandfather is a diehard Republican, and happens to be a Trump supporter. A few months ago, we spent 8 hours in the car together: more than half the time was spent listening to Fox News Radio and talking about Trump and the Republican perspective on the country and the election.
I have my own political views. I’m not really sure what I believe entirely a lot of the time. I have rough ideas, but when voting I look for the candidate that most represents my beliefs.
Anyway, my goal in our conversations was always to only try and understand his perspective.
I knew – my grandfather, being more than 70 years of age – that I was not going to be able to convince him of anything. So I took the opportunity to listen and understand his perspective without ever trying to express that he was wrong, because with his life experience I wouldn’t be able to compete. He has been on this planet three times as long as I have. Naturally, I learned a lot. There is a lot of emotional basis that comes from supporters of Trump, just as there is for any candidate that people feel strongly about. This is really important. There is a lot of Sanders-level enthusiasm for Trump and trying to understand why was very interesting. The next time you talk to someone who disagrees with your political views, don’t talk to them as though you are going to convince them. Just try and learn and see if you can find some common emotional understanding. There is a lot of hatred that I feel between Clinton and Trump supporters and I don’t really understand it. When my grandfather and I talked, we never had any kind of heated argument. Even though we disagree on most (all?) of the issues, we spoke to each other respectfully from an emotional basis and spoke through arguments from that perspective. And we disagreed on a lot of things: but arguing the issues from different base perspectives will always be hopeless. This is important: arguing the issues from different base perspectives will always be hopeless. But coming to and realizing where it is that we disagree was where I was able to learn the most. Putting all the rhetoric of the campaigns aside, what matters is the emotional basis on which we think about the issues that affect us most. And he had a lot of good points that I hadn’t considered before from a different basis of emotional thought – it wasn’t previously in my worldview and I had an appreciation for the other perspective, even though I disagreed. Maybe if we understood that a bit more about each other, we could treat the election process as it is meant to happen and allow: the people that feel most strongly about a certain candidate provides the candidate’s victory. I’m not saying you have to agree with everyone who has a different viewpoint. Just be open to new perspectives and allow other people’s feelings to have the value they deserve.

I'm going to be one of those dads that will listen to Pink Floyd alone at night and tell nobody about it but my kid will have an idea of how much I love them by the time they're around 14
