Meaning of 陈情 Chenqing
This is going to be a rehash of the old Taming Wangxian footnotes, but I’ll be adding a little more.
The term 陈情 Chenqing has two meanings.  The first would be to reminisce past relationship (former friendship), and the second would be to provide a full account of (an issue).
Tumblr media
To gain further context about this term, let us look at where it originated from.  It was first originated from Wenxuan (‘Selections of Refined Literature”) compiled by 萧统 Xiao Tong, the Crown Prince of the Liang Dynasty.  In the Wenxuan, there is a segment called the 陈情表 Chenqing Memorial (to the throne), which is a letter written by Li Mi, a scholar of the Western Jin Dynasty to the Emperor Wu of Jin.  The Emperor Wu of Jin had employed him to work in the palace stables but Li Mi wanted to take care of his elderly grandmother.  His father died, his mother remarried and he lived with his grandmother.  So he wrote this heartfelt letter about his family circumstances and the hardship that he’s facing.  (It’s basically a resignation letter lol). The story didn’t end well and he was removed from his post, defamed and he died at home.
This term is also used in the modern context of confessing before a court.  Hence, a 陈情 Chenqing is almost like a plea of sorts.  It fits so well as firstly, Wei Wuxian is essentially treated like a criminal throughout the entire book and everyone in the series expects a “confession” from him.  The confrontation at Nightless City was almost like a court that wanted to trial him.  And secondly, from the historical context of the word, it could have hinted that it wouldn’t make a different no matter what he said and he wouldn’t have ended well.
陈情 and 随便 are commonly thought to depict the shift in Wei Wuxian’s character. 随便 (suí biàn) represents his youth; he is carefree, relaxed and without worry.  陈情 on the other hand, is a depiction of his loss and loneliness. Chenqing was created from his time in the Burial Mounds - it’s a turning point for him because at this juncture, he had no means to give his own account or prove his “innocence”, simply because he has walked the demonic path. He’s unable to tell his loved ones that he lost his jindan, and as much as he misses his past relationships, he’s unable to relive them because he’s labelled a “demonic” Yiling Laozu.
An interesting titbit can be found in the title of the Untamed, 陈情令 (chén qíng lìng). There are two possible interpretations to this.
(i) The main focus of the story is on Wei Wuxian and his character growth, hence placing 陈情 in the title puts the emphasis on him.
(ii) 陈情一曲令天下 (chén qíng yī qū lìng tiān xià) - According to a forum, the producers have  used this line to describe the drama’s title. It can be translated to, “a song from Chenqing commands the world”, aptly depicting Chenqing’s power.

the WOH cast will forever be the most iconic to me <3
So when the Word of Honor concert was first announced, there were lots of inside jokes in the fandom about how a live concert would even work when the entire cast is unhinged as hell and that every single one of them made it their own personal mission to make sure everyone knows that WenZhou are in love and married, censorship be damned.
One of the predicted outcomes was someone's microphone getting cut off mid-speech. But who was it going to be? The mad man Zhang Zhehan himself? Huang Youming with his wedding table jokes? Chen Zihan with her top trending wedding edit? Gong Jun the human collander? Wang-Laoshi and his blatant RPS agenda?
Well it was none of them because it was freaking Heizi-Laoshi (Gao Chong) of all people.
Tumblr media
It started on the first day of the concert, when the 5 Lakes Alliance uncles shocked the fandom by being the first of the cast members to crack. They wrote 老温 Lao Wen ❤️ 老周 Lao Zhou on their whiteboards and held it up behind the unsuspecting Wenzhou's heads.
Tumblr media
On the second day of the concert, people noticed that their seats were moved to the opposite side, as far away from Wenzhou as the seating arrangements allowed.
Tumblr media
But what Youku and the concert staff didn't know at that time is that distance does not matter in the face of a determined Heizi-Laoshi. He had a big booming voice and was certainly not afraid to use it. Unstoppable Force (Heizi-Laoshi) versus Immovable Object (Censorship)
MC: "Heizi-Laoshi is going to show us his talent!"
Heizi-Laoshi: "YES I AM GOING TO SING A SONG AS A TRIBUTE TO OUR WENZHOU'S LOVE!"
Tumblr media
Heizi-Laoshi, after singing: "I WISH THAT THEY WILL ACCOMPANY EACH OTHER FOREVER UNTIL THEIR HAIRS TURN GRAY AND WHI-" *mic gets cut off*
MCs, desperately trying to drown out the crowd's screaming: "THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU HEIZI-LAOSHI, THANK YOU!!!!"
Tumblr media
The only thing more impressive than Heizi-Laoshi's determination to literally scream out Wenzhou's love to the world is how casually Zhang Zhehan and Gong Jun reacted to the whole thing. No embarrassment, no awkwardness. Just pure chaotic approval.
And then Huang Youming, determined not to be outdone, declares that he will be singing a song as well.
Tumblr media
Huang Youming: "I'M GOING TO SING A SONG BY MY IDOL JAY CHOU"
MCs: "Okay!" ☺️
Huang Youming: THE TITLE OF THE SONG IS "A SECRET THAT CANNOT BE TOLD"
MCs: "HUH????"
In the end, none of the parts described in this post were included in the livestream's replay version. No doubt the funniest thing about all this is that everyone expected the younger cast members to go wild, but it was the uncles who ended up scandalizing everyone. Huang Youming was expected, but literally NO ONE saw Heizi-Laoshi coming. Bless his shipper heart.

Awww thank you!! I'm so hyped to be here and I'll definitely be stopping by shortly to scream with you (context, I'm on episode 19 and shook about it) <3
Tumblr media
I've been going down that rabbit hole of mystery/thriller type dramas with heavy bromance (read: queer subplot) and uhhh why aren't people talking about this drama??
In terms of plot, I'd compare it to Under the Skin, where you have a police captain paired with an expert in their field (in this case: hypnotism).
At the start there's tension whereupon they don't want to work together (like in Beyond Evil) and both of them spend half the show not trusting each other and always suspicious (aka like BE). But then they start to become soft for one another and- well you'll have to watch to find out 😉
There's no love interest for either of them during the entirety of the show (like with A League of Nobleman) and the show makes their relationship very much the focus instead.
They bond over fighting, first with each other and united against others (like with The Merciless) and there's a cat and mouse sequence (reminiscent to Strangers From Hell) where we're unsure whether we've been duped too!
Also the visuals are beautiful! As in the characters themselves (look at these two) but also the cinematography - you can tell this show was shot with love.
Anyway, as long as you're able to ignore a few plot holes, and prepare your heart for some gory/intense crime scenes, then check out Desire Catcher on Viki! (I'm currently dealing with the fic bug and wanting to write fic for these two beautiful humans 👀).
Talking about this with @affiesque has been fun (check out their list of highlights 🥰!)

It's a new day, I'm forgoing homework (not really, I am doing it in parallel) in favor of trying to finish Desire Catcher by tonight. I have class tomorrow and it will not do me good to be conjecturing about possible ending scenarios while trying to give a presentation >.< Spoilers ahead!
Ok so I'm in the middle of episode 19, and the reason I even decided to make a post is that I can't stop laughing at Luo Fei right now. He's being ridiculous. His man came back and now he's giving out Lan Zhan-type smiles left and right, he's handing out LOLLIPOPS, and the first thing he says when his supervisor calls him about a strange case is "omfg it's hypnosis". Bestie, you'd never even heard of this until like 2 months ago, just because your boyfriend is a hypnotist doesn't mean everything in existence suddenly is related /j
Also, I didn't mention this before but why does Luo Fei take LFP everywhere?? For what purpose? LFP is NOT a detective - there is no reason he has to accompany Luo Fei to the various crime scenes when sometimes the junior detectives don't even go. It is SO funny to me how clingy this serious detective is (and I love him for it).
Idk I just think Luo Fei is such a different character than what I expected and it makes me really happy! He is just as kind and considerate as Lu Feng Ping, if not moreso, and it makes them a really good match for each other. Also I can't stop seeing similarities between him and Lan Zhan, who is my most beloved, and it's helping his case greatly. In conclusion, we stan Luo Fei in this house <3
The one thing I really want from this series is a FeiPing hug. They're really good with the shoulder pats and piggyback rides so I don't think it's completely out of the question.

OoooOO wonderful, I will definitely be coming to you with prompts as soon as I'm through watching, and YES please I would love a rec list!!!!
OMG BE is literally my favorite k-drama (tbh so many parallels to DC is probably why I'm enjoying this one so much) and I LOVE NLMG! We're gonna get along so well <33333

No but seriously I should not be ferally grinning at this sad MV style flashback sequence ep. 17 Luo Fei is having about Lu Feng Ping. It's just that I'm so sure all is going to turn out fine that I'm wearing the biggest rose-tinted glasses and watching my ship get some canon (not misspelled) fodder.

I'm at the end of Desire Catcher Episode 16 and I cannot even begin to tell you how unbothered I am. Absolutely nothing is going wrong. My little hypnotist son is actually living his best life and the next episode will tell me how.

Desire Catcher Ep. 14 ending thoughts
I just wanted to write about Lu Feng Ping (LFP) for a minute so spoilers ahead:
OK, so my only major gripe with the characterization of LFP so far is that they've made him too good imo. They ended this episode with him getting detained for something we don't know yet, and this is after he's spent the last few episodes acting kind of suspicious. Even Luo Fei has picked up on it and we saw him following LFP home. However, it's hard for me to believe LFP has actually done something wrong because of how they've established his background as a character.
He loves his mom and wants to find out who hurt her, he routinely acts like a little boy around the fruit seller aunty and store owner uncle (and even matchmakes them), and he eats lollipops to make life sweeter. He also clearly cares about Luo Fei and the team's wellbeing and goes out of his way to comfort people. Most importantly, he's also shown to have doubts about whether revenge is worth it if he has to betray Luo Fei. Taking all of this together, I don't feel like LFP is capable of truly being on the bad guy's side - though he might do something minor like tamper with evidence or switch out a case file, he doesn't seem like someone who can cross the line completely. For the angst and potential betrayal to really seem convincing, I wish they'd spent some time establishing LFP's conviction to getting revenge and letting us know the actual lengths he'd go to in order to do that.
On the flip side though, I think it's so interesting that Luo Fei and LFP are becoming suspicious of each other after they've already connected emotionally. I also really like that Luo Fei, who they could've easily made a stone-cold loner detective, is the one to reach out to LFP repeatedly. He's also watching LFP very closely which leads me to suspect that he already knows LFP is in contact with the bad guy (he always looks at LFP's phone when he gets a phone call and I think he's recognized that LFP has two phones right now). With LFP being detained, I'm sure he's gonna be the one to interrogate him and there's going to be some nonverbal cue between the two to indicate what's going on. Oooo actually LFP being a double agent would be a super cool storyline and I wonder if they'll go that route (e.x. he's working with Luo Fei to pretend like he's working with the bad guy in order to set a trap for said bad guy).
I'm hyped to see where they're going with this!

So I'm on episode 14 of a new show and it's taken over and now I want to write predictions for the last 10 episodes of Desire Catcher below (cdrama, crime solving with 2 male leads iykwim). Luo Fei I'll abbreviate as LF (detective in the back) and Lu Feng Ping as LFP (hypnotist in the front). If you need a reason to watch this, the hypnotist is basically like if Wei Ying from MDZS dressed like Castiel from Supernatural. The detective also gives off Lan Zhan vibes so the comparison is not entirely inaccurate. There's a few more parallels which you'll have to watch to find out though ;)
Tumblr media
In no particular order, here's what I think will happen next:
LFP is going to manipulate a case file for the bad guy
LFP will enter a trap set by bad guy and LF gonna save him complete with some sort of injury and hurt/comfort
Bad guy is already shaping up to be a hypnotist or someone very aware of the field - he will hypnotize someone on LF's team (my money is on childhood friend or new team member)
the purple/blue ring has to come into play somehow as part of the hypnosis maybe?
another LF and LFP fight scene where they're fighting for real but they still end up both on the ground just like in the first scene
LFP will not end up betraying LF for the bad guy (he was acting the whole time?)
the nurse turns out to be on the bad guy's side OR she's part of a murder plot
LF sleeps over at LFP's place and eats clay pot rice
the team goes out drinking and eating together (final shot maybe)
the team's forensic analyst person gets targeted by the bad guy bc we haven't seen him in a while and he's a father figure to LF
There's more to predict but let's see where we're at by the end of episode 14. No pressure to interact but tagging @thinkonce-acttwice in case you want to see :)
