Riding the subway is a lot like being in the airport, which is to say pleasantly powerless. You could try to get work done but it's not actually plausible. Read a book! People-watch! Sit placidly while listening to music! It is not exactly heavenly but it is the only way heaven could actually be, the only eternal pleasure, without drama, without conflict, without disappointment, that the human mind is capable of, in my humble opinion. Heaven is an uncrowded train car, peopled with amnesiacs, who all think they've got about 10 stops left til they get home, which is just enough time to get a couple of pages in on a book.

i think substack kind of reveals the problem with a lot of young writers and it's that they have nothing to talk about beyond writing and weepy little bits of introspection about "the unbearable fragility of young adulthood" or their failed relationships or living in new york that all say the same things. idk maybe training just to Write doesn't give you much to say

so my guitar teacher has been really trans positive since i met him and seemed interested in learning about trans people and that in itself doesn't mean anything but the other week he complained about his bald spot and how he thinks he's rather skinny but that also doesn't necessarily mean anything but anyway today he mentioned he really liked totally spies when he was younger and that also doesn't have to mean anything but
