Since there are people demanding for Dong Mae’s head to roll because of the hair cutting scene and making looooooooong paragraphs of rants out of it (and judging people too, mind you), mostly depending on assumptions and speculations when in fact there is no further explanation on it yet, I feel like there’s no harm for me to list down the possibilities and speculations shared online on why he did what he did too, right?
1. “ 1. [+6012, -148] The reason he cut her hair is because Takashi asked Lee Wan Ik what he thinks the children of those who were in the Righteous Army in 1895 are doing right now and if Ae Shin is the child of those soldiers in the Righteous Army then he’s suspecting that it’s also possible that she’s participating in the Righteous Army activities so that’s why he (Lee Wan Ik) did a background check on her parents’ names - Dong Mae cut her hair because if Ae Shin cuts her hair, it means that she gave up on Joseon’s spirit and she won’t be suspected of being in the Righteous Army” - Naver article comment via ddo_boja translation;
2. I believe Dong-mae cut her hair to keep her in her house, to keep her away from the dangerous situation. Dong-mae knew that Wan-ik will soon finds Ae-shin is the child of Righteous Army member, and he tried to protect her in his own way. While Gojong and Eugene “imprisoned” their people to protect, Dong-mae cut Ae-shin’s hair since he doesn’t really has governmental authority to keep Ae-shin in captivity.
Thus I think he cutted her hair to be entangled in scandal instead of Ae-shin, who just broke the engagement with Hee sung. Since almost every people in the streets saw the incident, they will keep look at their precious lady, Ae-shin to protect from further conflicts. Hence, even if Wan-ik finds out that Ae-shin is the child of the Righteous army, it would be not easy for him to do something to Ae-shin because there will lots of eyes watching her. Ae-shin can be the complete victim and cover up her scandal, and it will also keeps Ae-shin to move - holding a gun. - Yurim Kim on Dramabeans comments;
3. (This one is just a summary from the post, not a direct translation plus a bit of my comments echoing :P). Dong Mae truly meant it when he was saying that he doesn’t care even if the whole world becoming his enemy including Ae Shin and then deliberately cut her hair in front of a lot of people (me: with tears brimming in his eyes too!). When doing this, the public will see that he is a Japanese gangster doing harm towards Ae Shin who is the granddaughter of the respected Lord Go Sa Hong (Me: the public were mad when Lord Go was detained by their /King/, what more Dong Mae?). When seeing a lowly Japanese gangster like Dong Mae harming their precious Young Lady, it will make the public so shocked and so angry. How dare he cut our precious Young Lady Ae Shin’s hair? Their anger at the Japanese will be even more extreme and Lee Wan Ik wouldn’t be able to do anything to harm Ae Shin because the public will stand by her. The public’s gossips about Ae Shin’s broken engagement scandal will be replaced by their sympathy towards her for her hair being forcefully cut by a Japanese gangster. Dong Mae is purposely making the public, including Ae Shin, becoming his enemy this way as it could help protecting Ae Shin. - from The Qoo discussion post

Viktor and Jayce both need to take some non-STEM classes
I'm joking but also a little not-joking that this is in fact, a theme in the show.
In Season 1.08, Ambessa meets Jayce for the first time after he's become a councilor. One of the first questions she asks him is, "Do they teach military history at your Academy, Mr. Talis?"
Jayce takes this as a set up for an insult against him. He's rattled by the bathhouse and braced for a fight. He's so riled, in fact, that he completely misses what Ambessa is probing him for there.
Ambessa wasn't setting him up to make him feel small, like Jayce feared, she wanted to know if he had a military history background or even the beginnings of the skills needed as an engineer to understand or counter some of the political manipulations she's about to pull on him.
Jayce answers: I'm not sure.
Not only has Jayce never taken a military class, he as a scientist doesn't even know if his school offers it.
That made him easy pickings for Ambessa. She wouldn't even need to be subtle, she could use the most basic tricks in the book against a proud young man with only a scientific background and know he wouldn't even begin to have the tools to pick up let alone counter what she's doing to him.
And then we get to Viktor in S2. Now, I think "How much of Cult Leader Viktor is even Viktor?" is a fair question. But the whole Machine Herald ethos he seems to be working towards in his inner monologue in 2.06 is yet another example of "Won't someone PLEASE make these boys take some sort of liberal arts class? An ethics course? SOMETHING?"
Viktor is working his way (Hexcore influence or no) to the conclusion that many frustrated young activists have hit upon when their activism doesn't work.
He tried to help people. But people didn't want to be helped or didn't cooperate with the way he wanted to help them.
His conclusion? Clearly it's the people who are wrong. It's the people who need to be changed.
To quote Pratchett, "“People on the side of The People always ended up disappointed, in any case. They found that The People tended not to be grateful or appreciative or forward-thinking or obedient. The People tended to be small-minded and conservative and not very clever and were even distrustful of cleverness. And so the children of the revolution were faced with the age-old problem: it wasn't that you had the wrong kind of government, which was obvious, but that you had the wrong kind of people.”
And of course, once you start to see people as the problem, that people need to be fundamentally changed, added, or subtracted from, when you treat people as things, that is when the real evil begins.
You have to accept people as they are and work within those bounds, because otherwise you have to change people and that pretty much always leads to the sort of atrocities that the Machine Herald seems gearing up to do. Namely, add and subtract away the people, or the characteristics of people, that don't fit his vision for the world.
And all I can think is: won't Piltover Academy please for the love of god make your tech bros take some goddamn history and philosophy classes please??

Ngl I feel like some of the reactions regarding Gilchae in episode 17 was a bit unfair and biased, to just over simplify it to just Gilchae still being 'prideful'
I mean... the ONLY reason Gilchae returned to Joseon was because Janghyun told her to do so. Because Janghyun told her that he had grown sick and tired of HER. She LEFT because it's what Janghyun WANTS!
And the whole thing about her living a 'flashy and fashionable' life? That was because Janghyun told her that she should reclaim back her life and live her life the way she used to live. And THAT caused her grievance because she can no longer live that kind of life and show THAT to Janghyun to show that she was living 'well'. THAT should be the reason why she didn't want to show her current state to Janghyun.
Heck, the only reason why she did that trick about still being married and pregnant was because Ryang-eum TOLD her to meet with Janghyun and show him that she was 'doing well' and to make Janghyun give up on her. Gilchae did that because she thought that was what Ryang-eum wanted her to do. Because Ryang-eum told her that Janghyun always gets hurt whenever she was involved. Yet after all of that, Ryang-eum still BLAMES her for so 'easily' letting Janghyun go and for still being 'prideful'. Even when she's doing it for him because Gilchae knows that Ryang-eum didn't like her to see Janghyun!
And THIS is coming from Gilchae who used to LOVE listening to Ryang-eum singing!
It's like people forget that as much as Gilchae do carry herself with confidence, she do still have her own insecurities and fears. I mean, her dad had almost killed her just because he thought that doing that would prove her 'innocence'. Her own sister, ex-husband and other people around her kept asking her if she really had been taken advantage of by the foreign intruders as if that was the only worth that she have and probably wouldn't believe her anyway if she said she fought hard to protect her chastity. Even if nothing really happened to her (as in her being violated sexually and penetratively) people will still see her as 'dirty' just because she had been kidnapped and taken out of Joseon or as much as had her hands or bare skin touched by the foreign intruder. No one would bother to listen to her reasoning as to why she hurt herself and create a scar on her head just to avoid serving someone in bed, much less believe that she fought for her life to protect herself. People would just assume she had been violated already.
Like seriously, how dare Ryang-eum assumed it was so 'easy' for her to let Janghyun go?
She had been abandoned by her ex-husband JUST for that reason alone! Won't Gilchae worry that Janghyun would do the same? The same Janghyun who even caught the interest of a Qing princess? Of course she'd feel that she no longer had any right to pursue Janghyun anymore. Of course she won't think she could still be with Janghyun again as much as she was able to divorce her husband after knowing who was it that she truly love. And Janghyun did say that he'd grown tired and sick of her!
If there was any other pride left in her, it's that she didn't want Janghyun to come for her out of pity. To which Janghyun's confession of love just dispel that last bit of doubt in her.
Like I get it people had feelings for Ryang-eum after the reveal about his past. But that doesn't mean that twit don't still do some selfish things. It doesn't justify the lies that he made as well thinking that Gilchae was the only one that causes bad things to happen to Janghyun.
If not because Janghyun had to care about all of the other captives (because Ryang-eum kept whining abt it; and Ryang-eum don't do anything much afterwards ANYWAY to help those captives go home or even take care of them, he just left that to Janghyun to deal with), Gak-hwa wouldn't have HAD that other leverage to hold on to Janghyun! Who was it actually being a 'curse' to Janghyun?

We love a consistent man in this household
I usually hate it when characters only change their perspective when it directly concerns them or someone they love. It's realistic but so heartbreaking.
But Janghyun has been consistent in one thing: rape doesn't ruin a woman.
He's said this about strangers. He's said this to the little gisaeng that grew up. Which was why his reaction to Gilchae was magical.
He wasn't just suddenly realizing it. He wasn't just changing his mind because the woman he loved had been violated. He wasn't making an accommodation just for her.
He was just stating a fact that he believes: she deserves hugs not insults.

I think it's interesting that in the first half of My Dearest, Lee Jang Hyun was constantly portrayed as this greedy merchant who only cared about money. There was this entire narrative about him that he bought his way into this privileged life and people looked down on him because he was very vocal about his refusal to throw himself onto a sword for a king who didn't even care for his people. He was thought to be spoiled and shallow and everything that was the opposite of honorable. And yet, the entire second half of the drama shows us just how honorable and steadfast this man is.
We are shown examples of true greed in this drama. We see it in the king and his ever growing paranoia that stops at nothing to keep him at the top. We see it in Jang Hyun's father who sends his daughter off to die for loving a boy that threatened his power. Then we see it again when his father gives the command to kill Jang Hyun because Jang Hyun threatened to shatter everything that's precious to him. We see greed in Guk Hwa and her need to have everything she desires, even when they're vocal about not wanting to be with her. We see so many more examples of what greed is and the consequences of greed for more power. And yet, Jang Hyun is none of those examples. He dedicates his life to protecting his people, and those people are strangers who were just unlucky in their imprisonment by the enemy. He literally gives up his wealth to free the captured and give them the dignity of walking back home to their own country.
He's also dedicated to one woman and he refuses to let anything get between them. He fought off armies to go back to his hometown. His hometown, which isn't a location, but a woman. How beautiful is it that despite his memory loss his body feels the longing and loss for Gil Chae as he looks up at the moon. He might not have remembered her face or name but he remembers every single moment they had together, starting from the very beginning all the way to the end. Unknowingly, he retraces his steps back home with the memories he had of the woman he loves. Lee Jang Hyun had their entire life set up for them and was waiting for her without even realizing who he was waiting for. I can't stop thinking about how a love like that is a love meant to survive anything and everything. There's no man like Lee Jang Hyun. His "greed" was just a front. His true self is a man of integrity and loyalty. He loves so hard and protects so fiercely.
It truly was an honor watching his story and it's a story I'll be thinking about for a very long time.

My Dearest ep. 17
god, that entire confession scene at the end of ep 17 has to be one of the most beautiful confession scenes ever and for so many reasons too. It was beautiful because Jang Hyun's finally clearly putting into words how he feels about her. He lets her know how sincere his love for her is because the only thing that matters to him is her, just Gil Chae. It makes no difference to him if she's poor or rich, if she's rude or obedient, if she loves him or not. Because nothing will change his feelings for her. And this directly reassures a lot of her insecurities.
She's always had the advantage of being a noble and the privilege that comes with it. Now she has nothing but he still loves her. She's stated in an earlier episode that she is who she is, whether it's arrogant and loud or just beautiful and nice to be around and she wouldn't be changing that for anyone. Jang hyun appreciates every aspect of her personality. And her biggest issue with Jang hyun has always been his past history with other woman and this reputation of him being a player. She always worried that he'd lose interest or wasn't serious about her, but here he is standing in front of her letting her know that his feelings will not waver. He will continue to love her. He also drops the bombshell of how much she affected him from the first moment he laid eyes on her. It was love at first sight for this "player" and he knew that everyone else before Gil Chae was insignificant because he had never felt the way he feels about her about any other person.
The other absolutely beautiful part about this ending scene (and my personal favorite) was the comfort he provides her. Because after being abandoned and blamed by her husband for being violated by intruders, her mistrust/hesitance is completely understandable. She asks him 'what about a Gil Chae who's been violated by an intruder?' And at first you can kinda see the anger/stoicism in his eyes because he's angry. Not angry at her. But angry that she was violated in the first place and that she was hurt again by the world for being a victim. Then he softens and says what I think Gil Chae's been wanting to hear for a very long time. He comforts her and offers his warmth because he knows she's in pain. He knows she went through hell and back. She's had to be so strong for literally everyone around her in order to survive. And now, here's her man holding her and telling her that she did such an amazing job at holding on and not giving up. He tells her she no longer needs to worry because he's here and he'll protect her and because now she knows the whole truth and the amount of times he's already saved her, she can rely on him. She knows she's safe now.
I think those words were just as impactful as his confession of his love because we have to remember that as the audience we got to see everything Gil Chae went through. Every single heartbreaking decision she had to make to survive. The strain it put on her mind and body. Jang Hyun did not see those moments but because he knows her and understands the brutality of war he has a very good idea of what she must have went through. Gil Chae doesn't need to explain herself to him. She doesn't need to convince him that it was her fault. He tells her that if she would like to tell him, he would listen. And yet, he basically tells her he's proud of her and holds her, allowing her to lean on someone else for a moment. I cried watching this scene just because I couldn't help but think of the relief she must have felt in that moment. I was happy she had the love of her life back and she could take refuge in his arms for the time being.

Did you ever hate me?
The day you left me for good, I resented you so much that I stared at you for awhile. However, no matter how long I looked, I could never feel hatred toward you. Instead, I hated myself. How cold of you. Did you even imagine how I must have felt?
I could not imagine it. I just knew that my heart was being torn into a thousand pieces and could only hope that you would not feel the way I did.

"Happy photos of people reading Neil in the bath"
"Neil. Nakedness. Books. Bubbles. Baths." This is the blurb of a 2012 blog dedicated to reading Neil Gaiman's books in a bubble bath, taking a photo and sending it to the blog for Neil to appreciate. No, I'm not kidding.
I just discovered this and ugh. At the speed of the internet, indeed. This man couldn't wait long enough, for people to send him photos of them reading in a bathtub. On that blog there's photos of what looks in all effects, minors. Who thought this was a good idea? A 50 years old man reblogging photos of fans in bathtubs, almost all of them young women. The more I learn of this man, the more disgusted I become. Apparently a fan took the initiative: I wonder if it was actually a fan.
I don't feel comfortable putting the direct link to that blog, but it's still visible, I'm not inventing anything. Neil Gaiman was definitely monitoring the blog, because he reblogged and put a like on some of the most "explicit" ones.
"I bet he did".
As I said, a 50 years old man was actively liking and reblogging photos of his young female fans, naked in bathtubs. Some of them look way too young for comfort, that's why I censored them: even if it makes little sense since they're still on that blog, it still felt right.
As of February 2024, no one still saw it as weird, included Neil "Simpler Times" Gaiman. It's been under our noses this whole time.

i'm sorry.
Much to say, much to say…..When I first started this show, I didn’t expect to be taken in as much as I have been. I knew I would like the coupling of Jane and Lisbon but not to the extent that I’m here typing these words over a CBS procedural. Only four seasons in and they’re already a top ship for me without even being together yet or me having finished the show!!! WHEW - if any of you follow me on twitter, you’re witnessing this journey and how much this show eats at my mind. ANYHOW let’s move onto season 4, episode 10 - Fugue in Red.
Basic summary is: Jane drowns, nearly dies, and loses his memory. Now he doesn’t lose his complete memory - he just loses the emotional memory of losing his family. We see a Jane that isn’t affected by tragedy and one who still uses his conman ways. I will say I don’t believe that this is a Jane who never loses his family - it’s one who never had a family to begin with. More to say later. NOW I want to examine some scenes that stick out to me!
Firstly, of course, we have the cold open. The team is on the search for someone who killed a firefighter. Jane goes off on his own and nearly dies as a result. He’s pulled underwater by the murderer and left for dead. Lisbon is searching for him and yells out his name (in a delightful little detail, Robin Tunney’s accent is strong when she says ‘Come AWN’ - I absolutely love it.) She finds him face down in the water and we get this beautiful little scene:
Her absolute desperation kills me here - I think she reacts somewhat similarly to anyone on her team but it’s amplified because it’s Jane. She is PLEADING, BEGGING, WILLING him to start breathing. She’s clutching her cross that we’ve seen before - Strawberries and Cream part 1 comes to mind. We learn later in the episode it’s a gift given by her departed mother. One more thing I love about this scene is her saying “He’ll be fine, he’ll be fine” about Jane to Cho while wiping her tears and, really, trying to convince herself of her words.
This next scene is something I wanna touch on: I love the intimacy we see given to Jane by Lisbon. He’s lost his memory and doesn’t know who she is and asks “are we sleeping together?” The reason I love this scene has to do with the fact I think it’s handled wonderfully. In a lesser procedural, this might just be a scene left for shippers to grab onto but here, it’s to show the audience how Jane might be still as a conman while also showing the closeness he perceives of the two of them. AHHHHHH.
He’s released from the hospital to work on the case - Rigsby has told him he’s always doing weird stuff and such to solve cases so what does Jane do here? Put a literal red herring in the pocket of a man as a joke. It eventually shows a man connected to the victim’s wife. What I want to highlight here is Rigsby’s comment in the above cap - saying his stunt is like the old Jane. But to this Jane, there never was an old him! He’s him and, for the Jane we know, this stunt is something the old (conman) Jane would have done. I love this line and there’s many layers to it!
I love this whole scene but I really wanna focus on the line “we’re friends”. We’ve seen this over the seasons and especially in this episode: the team is told not to tell Jane about his past until it comes back to him. She follows this to a point: it’s not until the end she realizes she has to be A Friend and take him to recover his memory…more on this later. But of course she knows all about his memory palace: these are people he trusts, especially Lisbon. They’re not people to con for the Jane we know (not that he really cons much anymore). They’re not sleeping together, they’re not working towards that, they’re Friends!!! And what’s more important than the love and trust of a good friend?
WHEW the biggest part of the episode for me: THAT’S NOT HIM. I mentioned this a bit on my twitter but I love that Lisbon knows Jane enough to know this persona isn’t him - it wasn’t even really him before the tragedy. It’s a version that exists if he never has a family. Cho takes a bit of a negative view of all this saying they’re not really friends and he’s only the way he is because of his loss of family. He’s a hustler in reality, to Cho, and only a decent guy because of the tragedy. Lisbon disagrees - it was always there but the deaths of his family brought it out. In a season 2 episode, we see a teenaged Jane with his father in the circus: he’s someone who is distraught by tricking a dying girl and her family member that a crystal will rid her of her tumors. Jane wasn’t born a con man - he was molded by his father and the life around him to bury any emotions or feelings he had. The money helped with this but I do think his wife and daughter kept him as grounded as possible.
Sorry to keep loping around and this whole thing being disjointed - basically my stream of thoughts but I do wanna tie in the “we’re friends” comment with this scene:
He knows they’re tiptoeing around the fact some tragedy has happened to him but he’s HAPPY….just let him be happy. A true friend isn’t going to do that: they’re not going to let him forget what happened and why he’s here and still searching. He’s not going to be happy in the end - he knows this and Lisbon knows this. Near the end of the episode, Lisbon calls him out on running away because feelings are coming back - not the memories yet but the feelings are at least there. She offers to drive him somewhere and if he still wants to go, she’ll let him.
SHE DRIVES HIM FROM SACRAMENTO TO MALIBU - THAT’S A DAMN NEAR SIX HOUR DRIVE IF YOU DIDN’T KNOW. California is HUGE and here she is driving him to his home so he can remember, remember what his life is about at the moment. What it’s been like for the past 8 years - now that’s a true friend. And she’s sorry - sorry he has to be reminded in this way, sorry about what’s happened, sorry to not just let him be happy. She’s sorry. She’s his friend, she drives him six hours south, and she’s sorry. It’s a gut-wrenching yet beautiful moment. Jane, even in this state, trusts her enough to drive him so he can remember. I also think his stunt he pulled with the Tamara (his responsible adult) was his way of trying to stay with the team - he knows they’ll clock the bracelet is real and he committed theft but he wants to be caught! It’s why he comes back to the office, why he allows Lisbon to drive him for hours. The episode ends with a wonderful Blake Neely composition titled ‘Your Worst Nightmare’. Oh, I’m going to be thinking about this episode for a very long time.
