While many young Indonesians abandon rural areas for city life, Shofyan Adi Cahyono, 22, has decided to modernize his father’s farm in the highlands of central Java by embracing new technology and progressive farming methods.
More than half of the population of Southeast Asia is under 30. Technology shapes the way youth in the region live and work, even as they adapt it to their own unique circumstances. In some ways, these young people will inherit a better world than their parents knew, with higher income potential, increased access to education, and vast technological possibilities. They'll also face serious issues, such as the problem of climate change and challenges to openness and human rights. The following profiles offer a glimpse at the lives of three young Southeast Asians as they pursue their dreams of the future.

International Republican Institute (IRI) launched Generation Democracy in 2015 to bridge this gap. This global network of more than 400 young elected officials, civil society leaders, activists and journalists across 70 countries provides young leaders with a platform to exchange ideas and share best practices to increase political and civic participation among youth. The initiative builds upon IRI’s more than 30 years of experience helping youth across Asia develop their leadership potential and become more civically and politically engaged. From December 8–10, IRI convened 25 young leaders from 15 countries across Asia in Jakarta, Indonesia to exchange ideas and identify barriers to youth participation in decision-making. At the Jakarta Academy, young leaders learned how to plan and identify methods to translate goals into policy, collaborate through open data and develop strategies to build inclusive institutions. IRI partnered with Facebook to host a networking reception with Indonesian members of parliament who began their political careers as student activists. The reception was followed by an intergenerational dialogue with these MPs on how to get youth across the region interested in policy, process and politics. As part of International Anti-Corruption Day, IRI partnered with the Open Data Lab in Jakarta to host a hands-on-learning workshop during the Academy to promote youth and government collaboration through open data.

A recent shoot for Agoda documenting 18 children from across Indonesia on their first field trip away from home to Labuan Bajo, Komodo Island. These children were selected because they are avid readers and they were also special guests at a grand opening of a new library in Labuan Bajo. The library was made possible by the great initiative of Taman Bacaan Pelangi (Rainbow Reading Gardens), a non-profit social project to establish children’s libraries in remote areas of eastern Indonesia. To date, it has established 39 libraries across 15 islands in Eastern Indonesia. (https://tamanbacaanpelangi.com/)
