the big three and their mantras
grover i'll-be-here-when-you-get-back underwood
percy it's-okay-we're-okay jackson
annabeth you-can-do-this chase
something about fate taking the boy who has spent most of his life battling the lurking feeling that the people closest to him want to get rid of him, and giving him the most loyal and reassuring best friend who always tells him "I'll be here when you get back" giving him assurance that he's not going anywhere, especially not going anywhere from him.
something about fate making soulmates out of a girl who could only depend on herself from a very young age, who also had the responsibility of her brothers' and sisters' safety to think about, and a boy who takes care of her even at the risk of his own life, with the reassurance, that no one else has ever thought to offer "it's okay".
something about fate forcing together a boy who has been labelled a troubled kid, stupid, a failure, screw-up and a reject by almost every other person in his life, and a girl who never lets him doubt himself, his mind or his abilities, who constantly tells him "you can do this" with no misgivings about his greatness even when he doesn't see it.
something about fate connecting the souls of the boy who has never felt good enough, who has internalized guilt from an outcome he had little control over and carries it with him everywhere he goes, giving him feelings of worthlessness, and a boy who has never believed that faults or mistakes make you any less worthy of love or friendship, who has never hesitated to assure him that "it's okay, we're okay".
something about fate making lifelong ride-or-dies out of a girl who has been abandoned by everyone who should have protected her and a boy who always encourages her to go out into the world and make a difference with the constant reassurance "I'll be here when you get back".
something about fate linking a boy who always assumes that if something has gone wrong, it's his fault, who has zero confidence in himself not to ruin everything but still shoulders the weight of responsibility, and a girl who doesn't waver in her confidence in him, even when she's seen him fail and make mistakes she always tells him "you can do this" she knows he just needs a little faith.

i think a lot of people (especially those who haven’t read the books) are underestimating Hades
yes, he presents as the sassy queer uncle who’s done with his family’s drama, but he’s not “just some guy”
when his Helm is stolen, no one knows about it. he uses his own resources and orchestrates a plan to bring Percy to the underworld alive, all while managing an entire freaking kingdom
he doesn’t threaten war because he doesn’t have to and he knows it. unlike Zeus, he keeps a level head and thinks about the situation logically
think about Percy’s priorities throughout the show, look at what the flashbacks are teaching us about him and his relationship with others. think logically. this is a 12 year old kid who grew up with a single mom and no friends
his priority is his mom, it’s always been his mom and Hades knows that. Percy’s worst fear is losing his mother and Hades uses that against him
he takes Sally before Poseidon claims Percy because he has eyes everywhere. he already knew who Percy was and he already had a plan formed before Percy even set foot in camp
when he greets Percy and Grover he isn’t surprised, relieved, or agitated because he planned this. he knew that Percy would come to him whether by force or by his own choice (for my book readers, think about this in comparison to how Zeus reacts to the situation. Zeus comes off as desperate and angry, whereas Hades is at ease. annoyed, sure, but never panicked)
when he offers them pomegranate juice it’s in the guise of politeness and humour but it has an underlying meaning. Percy knows the stories about Hades and Hades knows that he knows. the pomegranate juice is a reminder, it’s Hades demonstrating his power without outright threatening Percy. it’s him going “I can make something as small as a pomegranate seed into a weapon” it’s him asserting his dominance and control over the situation
he leads them to a seating area clearly made for their arrival. another reminder that he knew they were coming and Sally stands, frozen in the middle of it as a reminder of what they have to lose
when he learns that it’s Kronos behind the robberies he immediately offers sanctuary to Percy, Grover, and his mom. Kronos, the king of titans, the father of all Gods, and a being who could once tear the world in two with the snap of his fingers, wants Percy, and Hades offers to protect him because he’s that powerful
so yes, Hades makes dad jokes and he talks in a way you wouldn’t expect an all-powerful being to talk, but he isn’t “just some guy”
he’s powerful, he knows it, and he shows just enough of that power to absolutely terrify Percy

hades
he put nico and bianca in the hotel to protect them from Zeus yes, but he also knew what could happen should they reach 16 so by putting them in the casino he offset the prophecy for as long as he needed
and then Zeus broke the deal. And Thalia started getting dangerously close to safety where she ran the risk of unknowingly starting war just by getting older. Anyone can admit that attempted kidnapping and murder was excessive, but he got what he wanted in the end. Thalia was “dead” she couldn’t turn sixteen and the world was safe.
with the helm and bolt missing, he probably figured either the Percy problem would take care of itself on the quest or after. But then he met the kid, and he heard about Kronos and you can just almost see the panic moment thinking about his own children locked in the Lotus Casino and the girl in the tree. All of the sudden it’s “i have to stop this i have to stop this i have to stop this” but the sanctuary was rejected, the boys left and now Kronos will rise
but not without Hades doing his best to stop it

don't mind me just crying over the parallels between Annabeths "he's not like that, he's better than that" to Hephaetus and Sallys "he's better than that" to Poseidon and how in the end, Sally made the absolute right decision about how to raise Percy and now he's teaching Annabeth the same things. Percy is a hero not because of Poseidon but because Sally was his parent. She taught him to stay kind and to love unconditionally and he is going to teach all of Olympus, and he started with Annabeth

When Rick said that we were going to have a Sally x Poseidon flashback, my mind thought about a nice day on the beach when they were getting to know each other. But no, oh no, that would have been too nice for Rick “I destroy lives” Riordan.
Instead, we got this heartbreaking moment of Sally desperately calling on Poseidon, because she is lost, she thinks she is doing everything wrong and that the only option is taking Percy to a place she doesn’t want him to go. And Poseidon shows up like 0.5 seconds after that calling, because ruling the sea can wait if Sally is crying, and he lets her talk and take out her frustration on him; because deep down he knows that is his fault. It is in his world that Percy is in danger, it is because he is his son that he will not have an easy life. Then Poseidon looks at this small child after Sally ask him if he want to talk to him, but he knows he can’t, no matter how much he wants too; because if Percy is already attracting monsters the presence of a god will only make it worse.
In that scene, they are just two parents trying to decide the best outcome for their kid in an incredibly unfair situation.

the way percy appeals to crusty and hades through this very human lens is soooo percy of him. fuck you and your immortality and your divinity can’t you see that this is wrong? why can’t you see that this is wrong? please help me fix this. please let me through. please let my mom go. what good is being all powerful when you leave lives in ruin behind you. why can’t you understand how horrific this is. he is a kid and he asks them for help and he wants so badly for people to just be better and i’m losing my mind

The nuance that the show is adding to Poseidon and Sally’s relationship is insane. Her creating a makeshift offering? The way you can SEE the tension in Sally release when the rain starts? Their talk about Percy? Rick you’re brilliant for this.

A lot of the portrayals of the gods have caught me off guard. Ares especially. And they’ve all been great!
But Hades is great in a very different way. Because the Hades as portrayed in the show is how I remembered Hades from the books even though it wasn’t how he was actually written!
A lonely, out-of-touch guy just trying to do his best with a terrible situation. Awkward, nervous, but also totally in command. Not entirely likeable, but not awful either. A sad little meow-meow just like his son.

I actually really love how poseidon came to see sally when she called. In the books he always says how much he loved Sally, but since it's from Percy's pov and poseidon can't interact with percy before he knew he was a demi god, it just feels empty because theres no proof. Since the show isn't from Percy's pov though, we get to see proof that poseidon actually did care for Sally and does actually want what's best for percy.
Every part of that flashback was actually heartbreaking and the parallels made it 10x worse
