That's totally what's happening. Marina isn't dense enough to not know that she's going to be dissed. On top of that, it's a publicity stunt/makeshift drama for Deep Cut, OTH is in on it so they must have agreed on what's going to happen. In case it wasn't clear enough, Pearl herself says she'll teach them a lesson and ends up giving Marina the spotlight after her verse.
She knows. She knows what's going on and what makes her part even better is how bitchy her answers are —yet they're worded in such a way that it'll piss Shiver off, prevent her from using her comebacks to diss her, and look like a sweet angel who's being kind!
I mean come on, NOBODY says "I love your vibe, there's so much I can learn from your style" when the person in front of you calls your voice dreadful. Marina never says she likes her style, just that she can learn from it (as in from Shiver's mistakes). The vibe part is condescending. When being called a child and mindless follower (which parallels Frye's earlier diss!), Marina reiterates that she's simply learning from Shiver and being all "aw thank YOU :)". That's the most effective way to shut passive aggressive people down AND be just as condescending. Marina even throws in that the more Shiver keeps trying, the better Marina will get. The last part is her basically bragging that this is nothing and she can keep going for a long time. She doesn't need to say more since she finally got Shiver to break and be direct. That's enough of a win for her. Shiver looks like a bitch while Marina was seemingly kind and oblivious.
Marina is an incredibly smart woman. Her lines reflect that, they're insulting and work on every level. Girlie might be as socially clueless as they come but she knows what's happening. Also out of Japan, Marina was originally characterized as a bit of a mean girl at times. Even though, they've now course-corrected her character, it looks like they've decided to make her a little meaner again for the song —which fits perfectly and is a nice throwback for the OGs. And again, being nice and taking literally is the only way to deal with someone like Shiver.
But anyways, in-universe either the lines are scripted or they at least knew what each duo was going to bring up. We know they were already friends and that Deep Cut has to be careful with associating with people from Inkopolis. If Shiver and Frye were genuinely angry, it'd be an entirely different story. Even in this song, Frye is letting Pearl talk and brag, leading her into hyping up Marina. They're hyping up OTH and low-key opening for them with this! Marina's role in this is to be the bigger, stronger star that's shutting down two Splastlandian gremlins and proceed with her concert. Just like Pearl, she doesn't need to fight, her place is already established. No need to argue when you already have the high ground and the public by your side!

Shiver’s passive-aggressiveness flying right over Marina’s head has gotta be one of my favorite parts of the song ngl.
Shiver is written with the stereotypical Kyoto personality, where they use a lot of backhanded compliments and passive-aggression, which is why that is their style of “dissing”.
Marina, though, is far too earnest to pick up on it, and instead compliments Shiver. Babygirl you are so autistic
#marina ida#shiver hohojiro#splatoon#shiver#marina#splatoon 3#off the hook#deep cut#image#y'all she's a former soldier and famous popstar she's dealt with much worse than Shiver's baby banter#she's also well into her 20s by now she's experienced enough to tell that Shiver wasn't being nice but that killing with kindness was#the most efficient way to win#plus let's be honest if she really was that lost in a rap battle Pearl would intervene#side note but Deep Cut pulling off publicity stunts is amazing and I wish they elaborated on that#and also about the whole part where they hate Inkopolis and despite being friends with people from there have to maintain a certain image#we have the lore to back this up but I'm tired of Deep Cut lore/characterization being implied so much#I mean the fact that groups have to go to Deep Cut to be able to perform on “their” lands is so interesting#and the fact that they felt the need to be defeated instead of simply stating that it's okay is really cool#like can we have their rougher edges be obvious?? I get Nintendo is so pussy that they won't let them be bad guys or have big flaws#but they can't keep giving them crumbs of lore like this if they can't go through with it#also back on topic but again Marina isn't being mean she's at most being a bit catty#like Pearl; her lines are basically “pipe down the grown-ups are busy” but hers are more of a “aw what a sweet attempt! it's okay you might#get me next time <3“#OTH's lines are very well written and we shouldn't dismiss it because Marina is usually a sweetheart#it also makes me think that she's purposefully playing on this because she knows that even if someone gets the double meanings she can get#away with it. just like with this post. we're all “she's too nice to do it on purpose!” but what if she is?? what if that is her way in a l#rap battle? she balances out Pearl's bluntness (ironically like Shiver and Frye balance each other out but they're both mean and aggressive#in general)#I mean short of insulting her; Shiver had no way to win this. she got DESTROYED. and I'm sure if she had been more direct; Marina would have#replied a lot harsher while remaining classy and keeping the high ground

With the movie and remaster coming out, it's crazy how many people don't know that Josh Until Dawn canonically survives.
He makes it!! A little silly and possessed but he makes it out alive! The VR sequel is basically him kicking the Wendigo out of his body. It's a fascinating look at what the transformation process is and a good way to finish his character arc

Conspiracy theory time: they're pushing for no more content/Splatfests so soon, despite the many empty seasons due to the DLC being delayed, because they don't want to waste resources for new OTH models. I mean, they did have special recolors but they won't hold up to the other groups' costumes even if the Squid Sisters' are low-key compared to Deep Cut.
The only "new" outfits OTH had was for the Springfest and that was their Octo Expansion/casual outfits. My bet is that it will be what they wear this time too and either the other two groups have an Easter-themed or flower-themed concept or the team will make them casual outfits. They might as well bring back the Squid Sisters outfits from 2, or make a model for Marie's outfit in 1 and keep Callie's since her kimono might be difficult to animate.
I hope they design brand new outfits for Deep Cut. The ones from the Chocolate fest promo were nice but Shiver wasn't giving and I'm not a fan of it being mostly actual in-game items. She's said to be stylish, let her wear something cool! Either have them wear outfits inspired by their respective cultures (as they did for the Halloween Splatfest) or have them wear something similar to their concept arts. Please give us back our edgy punk Deep Cut back. Come on, pretty please with a cherry on top—

Small pet peeves after the new art for the Japanese Splatfest came out: why is Frye NEVER in any indian-inspired clothing?? Shiver almost always is. It's not that Frye is any less traditional, we see her reference splastlandian traditions more often than the two others.
Would it kill them to have her have any item that references the culture she's based on...? I get it'd be harder for Big Man because he's a manta but even a small accessory or item near him would work.
That's something that also shows in their in-game songs. Most of them are generic pop, it's the live arrangements that bring back some of their unique sounds. Still, the Japanese inspirations are stronger, partly because Shiver always has more focus so her enka singing style is front and center. Daybreaker Anthem was a nice change of pace but the only live rendition of Calamari Inkantation 3mix has the Deep Cut part cut out... With the one moment where Frye's harmonies are Indian-inspired. I know the goal was to give the Squid Sisters more time in the song, because they always throw Deep Cut to the side in favor of the previous idols, but damnit for once we got a cool Deep Cut moment and something that brought out all the different cultures that inspired the characters at once...
The latest concert remedied that with the new arrangements but I can't help but think that visually, the team hasn't been it
From the artbook, we know how much was lost and how watered down the designs were but ffs Shiver is still shown on promotional material with a clear Japanese influence. Maybe Frye likes more modern styles but you can't tell me that gremlin wouldn't rep some traditional clothing or try to put a modern spin on it (contrasting with Shiver who doesn't). I get that dynamic from Callie and Marie. Both are from a more japanese-like area and Marie likes the aesthetic or her culture in general more while Callie just follows modern trends. It works because both have the SAME culture. With Shiver and Frye, it feels like one's culture is erased or pushed aside in favor of the other.
Idk, maybe they wanted one to be more modern à la Squid Sisters but bigger. Maybe they don't really dare show anything other than Japanese culture. But in the end, that just really sucks. Her strong japanese focus also makes Shiver stand out among the idols, doing the same for the other two members would help the trio in general have something that sets them out
Just rambling here

Oh boy, I'm very much French. Thought it was obvious I spoke it lol.
All our insults kinda sound like we're spitting them out. It's hilarious. Guess that's how our language works. I find "salope" more violent, the way it flows feels aggressive. But hey, any of these work and that part is at least well-translated! (Which isn't hard to do because there's like 5 words 😭)
Refoulé never, ever means anything else than gay when there is nothing next to it. That is its current meaning, has been for decades. Any French person would think of it immediately.
I am indeed saying it confirms the gay theory when it shouldn't. That's the translator making shit up. It's the worst time to do it because, as I said, the context makes it homophobic. I doubt that Kotoko is supposed to be a homophobe like what 💀 With her sense of justice, I doubt she would be, much less accept homophobes. Same logic with the slur, I doubt she's ableist. The lyrics have her mock Mikoto for his self-pity thing, not shit on him for having DID. The meaning in the lyrics is incredibly important, that's why botching the translation this badly matters so much. Something like "trompeur" could work? Not that word as it doesn't fit well (though it brings the cheating angle forward which does fit with Kotoko's intentions) but there are a million words to use instead. It's the fact that a slur is already used that makes it suspicious. At best, it's a badly-done job that was clearly rushed. At worst, it was purposefully offensive. No matter what, it's not a good look for the project and absolutely deserves backlash.
As for the r-slur, oh we fucking know. We just don't give a damn. The only times I've heard it used was as a slur. Some choose to reclaim it but I don't run in those circles enough to know. France's never been too fond of mental health so it's normal that this one slur doesn't carry the same weight as the English equivalent. It's still fucking offensive though. The translation just did that for shits and giggles. As I said, they could have easily been close to the actual lyrics and used "pauvre de lui/toi" or even, if they HAD to insult Mikoto, any synonym of "stupid". I could see her say "débile" or go as far as calling him "pauvre con".
I can't believe the damn English version has a better translation. It rarely happens outside of Milgram. Are... Are we falling off?! Are we being beat as the weeb country?? National shame I tell you. I don't think France's ever gonna recover 😔
I totally agree that Kotoko is in her incel era omfg! I cringed so much during her MV. Harrow was already cringe enough, this time it's just like... Girl,,, take a break. She's going on an edgy dark rant like she's the damn Joker or something 💀
French Kotoko is homophobic and ableist which is kinda funny ngl

it’s kotoko the fictional character implying those things are moral failings rather than the staff. french translation team decided she seems like someone who would use slurs, the tls have never been identical but they often reinforce different parts of the same information, and she was very hateful in the original japanese
It's not. Those were never in the text. There's a difference between a character using slurs and the translation team adding a slur and questionable language out of nowhere.
They aren't the same information as both the Japanese and English version. They add subtext that were never there, confirm things that aren't confirmed for Kazui. Even the Mikoto part has its importance as she's mocking his self-pity schtick, not the fact that he's mentally ill.
Translation is a job. You're required to keep the original intention and meaning. I've seen localization do that better than what is supposed to be a direct translation.

Okay so this is also going around on Twitter so I'm gonna talk about it on here too:
First off, since it's the smaller issue at hand, the Yuno part is nothing. The English and Japanese subs also call her a "slut". "Pute" is just one of the french words for "slut". Common, mean but not as bad as it's implied. This is perfectly translated as those are Kotoko's feelings and views on the character. Yuno is also very much a prostitute and she doesn't give a damn about the way people view her profession. Kotoko is verbally attacking every innocent character. She's name calling everyone.
Now for the real problems:
The Mikoto section is a part of the "Guilty" verse. In it, Kotoko is making references to the titles of their first songs. Guess what isn't in Mikoto's. In fact, the entire segment is mistranslated and forgoes the references. This means that this section is entirely new. Using the r-slur was a deliberate choice. I repeat, this was their choice, it wasn't in any version of the lyrics.
Not only is an entire verse badly translated, they ADDED A SLUR FOR NO FUCKING REASON.
Why??
Thus this raises concerns for the Kazui part. While yes, Kotoko is being deliberately insulting and violent with her words, and it's likely that he actually is denying his sexuality (though my personal interpretation of this verse is that Kotoko is echoing our feelings and theories to convince us to "allow" her to punish them all), it's... A Choice. The fact that the lyrics were changed earlier to add another slur makes me suspicious. Mikoto's segment could have been a little closer to the original "PoorMeMe"/"PoorMe poorMe" with something as simple as "poor him"/"poor you"/"poor them". Again, the r-slur is the direct translation for the word used in French. Same origins even. This should raise eyebrows at another slur being used. Even if you don't think it is one, which could be an opinion and this isn't the place to argue about it (and even I didn't personally stop to think about it at first), it's questionable language.
Especially when neither the Japanese or English lyrics have gay undertones.
Kazui is said to be a liar. A deceiver. Only the French translation uses a word that is inevitably referring to being gay and repressing it.
That should raise everyone's alarms. This is a clear change, if not a mistranslation, to add a new meaning to a sentence. This fundamentally changes Kotoko as it clearly makes it seem like she believes that Kazui is gay. No-fucking-body uses that word otherwise. It doesn't even quite make sense with the reason why she's talking about him! Kotoko is insulting everyone, making them out to be terrible people that deserve to be hurt. And, sorry, but troubles with one's sexuality doesn't really make me want them to be punished. However, being told that they are shady liars, deceiving (implying this is deliberately hurting someone) does.
For example, Yuno is called "obscene" and a "slut". Yet she's not close to obscene. Sure, she's a sex worker but that ain't my business. Kotoko uses it as an incentive, as an insult, to make us like her less. She's making Yuno sound "trashy", dirty, worthless. She's using the stigma against sex workers. Clever as this same thing is a part of the story surrounding her, it's something that could alter our judgement of her crime. It's part of the discussion around Yuno. She chose the worst part because, let's be honest, we can't use "girl prob aborted" as an argument against her.
The line about Kazui works the same: Kotoko is taking the worst parts about his story to turn us against him. He lied to his wife, possibly married her under false pretenses, hurt her deeply. Maybe badly enough it caused her death. But she doesn't bring up his sexuality. Because she's smart. She knows it will bring sympathy. So she skips over that!
Because you know what happens if you use it in that context?
You imply that being gay is a moral failing.
Kotoko is using what she, and society at large, believe are failings, mistakes, sins, on the characters' part against them. The French translation is indirectly saying that Kazui being gay, in a very conservative country mind you, is a failing on his part and is a damn good reason to want him to get beaten up or killed.
Do they think French speakers are so homophobic that this trumps deceiving your wife and causing her death???
Kazui's main theme is deception and what his web of lies has caused. This is his main conflict and the main reason why the audience is tempted to vote him guilty. Him possibly being gay, because it isn't confirmed, is what makes us sympathize and sways our judgement into voting him innocent. It's the justification, the reason why he did what he did. It's the nuance.
Not only does this mistranslation change two characters and confirms something that ISN'T confirmed, the second you think about it, it becomes deeply homophobic and offensive.
The line about Mikoto is pretty clear-cut. It's unacceptable. It's shameful. The translator actually deserves to be fired for that as, on top of being ableist, it's just a dogshit "translation". It also brings a negative light on Milgram, which they especially shouldn't get when they're actively trying to portray mental health and DID well decently as well as the other issues they tackle. Kazui's is just as offensive, just more subtle. It's genuinely bad. Translators must be careful with their words. The damn auto-translation tool on YouTube did better than them. It's not the first time either that they messed up the translation. They just weren't offensive this time.
