There are still things Dean refuses to tell Sam - or anyone, for that matter. But the echoes of those chilling memories ring in his ears daily like the jarring toll of a cemetery gong, announcing the permanence of Castiel’s death with an air of reverent finality. When he reaches around himself at night for a warm shoulder he winds up pawing the air and awakening in a cold sweat. The scent of the angel’s memory lingers like the smell of a long-extinguished candle - too distinct to be forgotten, but too distant to be remembered. When he closes his eyes, he tries to picture Cas’ coarse ebony hair or hear the sound of his laughter again, but the images slip right by him and he’s left holding on to a phantom. Suddenly when he opens his eyes and realization sets in, everything is icy again. He shudders, jolted to a stony awareness that he no longer remembers Castiel’s quirky expressions or the smell of his trench coat after a fight or the way his startling blue eyes shone when he talked about bees. He understands now that to picture Cas’ perplexed, puppyish grin, he has to invent it in his mind because he can’t recall all the lines of his face. He remembers most of the other man’s features, but the details are wearing thin and the spaces are being carelessly filled in. Dean’s heart pulses with utter exhaustion. It’s no longer pain that he feels but emptiness, and a vaguely familiar nostalgic longing for the unobtainable.
