Back in the MCU – Spider-Man: Homecoming review
Tumblr media
Spider-Man returns to our screens and to the Marvel family, following his appearance in Captain America: Civil War, we now have his first main starring role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and this movie does work as a stand-alone and doesn’t advance the overall MCU storyline as much as other editions in this franchise, which surely is to the film’s advantage.
Homecoming is directed by Jon Watts, who only has a couple of films under his belt and does not have much box office pedigree to boast of, but directs with assurance, particularly with the comic and high school-based parts of the movie – and this film does give time to Peter Parker’s high school life. His school cohorts include, best pal Ned, played by Jacob Batalon, the girl he has a crush on, Liz (Laura Herrier), as well as Michelle played by Disney starlet Zendaya and even a re-imagined Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori) shows up. These scenes do work well, especially contrasting with Peter’s extra-curricular activities, sneaking out of school to fight crime and begin his superhero journey.
The premise of this film, is that our dual-identity hero is excited after having his initial interactions with The Avengers and is eager to do more. However, Tony Stark/Iron Man believes that Peter isn’t yet ready for the big leagues, and so Spidey us relegated to just being ‘a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man’. Peter is having fun using his powers, as well as taking selfies and seeing videos of his exploits posted online – and seeing the reactions of his school buddies. But, Peter still wants to become a fully-fledged Avenger and prove himself, so he begins investigating when powerful weapons, seemingly not from this planet, begin showing up all over New York.

Stargate Universe finally continues with new comic series: Back To Destiny
Tumblr media
The return of Dr. Rush, Colonel Young, Camile Wray, Eli Wallace and the rest of the characters from the fan-favorite TV show Stargate Universe, is upon us thanks to this comic series courtesy of American Mythology Productions. The creative team behind this series includes, Stargate Atlantis writing team of Mark L. Haynes and J.C. Vaughn, as well as The Land That Time Forgot and Marvel’s Gorilla-Man artist, Giancarlo Caracuzzo.
The show ended rather abruptly and without the opportunity to provide many answers to some of the questions the show revelled in during its run. Fortunately, Stargate Universe begins right where Season Two of the acclaimed science fiction show ended, with the crew and unwilling passengers of Destiny set to cross a vast expanse of space with no margin for error.
With almost all of the willing and unwilling crew of the ancient starship Destiny in suspended animation, only Eli Wallace is left awake to repair his own stasis pod before time runs out. While he races against time, a new and unexpected danger threatens the fragile plan designed to keep everyone alive and away from the aliens who had been pursuing them. What strange new menace confronts Eli, Colonel Young, Doctor Rush and the others?
Back to Destiny #1 is out now and issue #2 is published on the 19th of July.

Spider-Man: Master Plan #1 relaunches The Crime Master
Tumblr media
Everythings going perfectly for Peter Parker. He’s got some time off and landed tickets to the hottest Broadway show in town, which means there’s another shoe ready to drop somewhere. Everyone’s favorite web-slinger in an all-new story against his foe The Crime Master. This Spidey villain is one of the classics created by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee, but rarely depicted. The Crime Master is a professional-criminal who works behind the scenes to build a criminal empire, and usually makes an interesting counterpart foil. No doubt this launch is partly motivated by the release of Spider-Man Homecoming and is perhaps an attempt to generate some nostalgia around the iconic character.
This issue is written by Robbie Thompson (Dr Strange, Amazing Spider-Man) and illustrated by Nate Stockman (Amazing Spider-Man, Gwenpool). The variant covers are designed by Ron Lim and Giuseppe Camuncoli.
This edition also includes a special reprinting of Amazing Spider-Man #2, featuring the first appearance of The Vulture. Spider-Man: Master Plan #1 will be released by Marvel Comics on July 5th.

Marvel Comics releases Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spiderman
Tumblr media
This is the return of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, courtesy of writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Adam Kubert. From a Marvel press release:  ‘The webslinging, wallcrawling wonder returns to New York City in the all-new Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spiderman. A companion series to the best-selling Amazing Spider-Man series, Peter Parker is going back-to-basics for big heroics in the Big Apple. Featuring adversaries old and new, and his never ending battle against crime and the dreaded Parker Luck.’
Marvel’s main Spider-Man title, The Amazing Spider-Man is dealing with Peter Parker’s world spanning adventures, and as the Marvel blurb suggests, this Spectacular Spider-Man series will keep Peter in New York and focus on his crime-fighting escapades in his home turf. The ‘Spectacular Spider-Man’ title goes back to 1968, an it has generally been seen as a companion series to the flagship ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ title, it has gone through several incarnations through the years – and also courted some controversy from fans, especially with the ‘clone Spider-Man’ storyline, which suggested that the Spider-Man depicted for the last twenty years had actually been a clone of the real Spider-Man (Marvel later reversed this in official canon).
Zdarsky is often a humorous writer, so we could be expecting the fun, wise-cracking Spider-Man we all love and the nerdy Peter Parker and from the quote given, Zdarsky is going to have a lot of fun with the dual nature of the character.

Jean Grey #1 is part of Marvel Comic’s new Resurrexion series
Tumblr media
In this new ongoing Marvel Comics series by Dennis Hopeless (All-New X-Men, Spider-Woman) and Victor Ibanez (Extraordinary X-Men), Jean Grey is determined to escape her destiny of becoming possessed by the Phoenix.
We follow Jean Grey in this solo publication as she attempts to undo her own future. In the finale of Avengers vs X-Men, a teenage Jean Grey traveled through time and arrived in the present. She discovered the fate of her predecessor as the Phoenix, the cosmic entity has left her in an endless cycle of life and death. Now she knows through a premonition that the Phoenix is coming for her and Jean Grey is setting out to prevent history from repeating itself.
This new publication is following on from the Brian Michael Bendis series, Avengers vs X-Men, so this is the original 1960s line-up Jean Grey. All of the interceding events have not yet occurred, you could call it a retcon, which is the flavor of the month in X-Men outings.
Jean deserves her own solo series, which surprisingly has never happened before. The singular X-Men titles allow more time for exploring the character and with conclusion of the X-Men vs Inhumans and the Phoenix there are many plot threads to unravel.

Preview of Star Trek: The Next Generation: Mirror Broken #1
Tumblr media
A new comic is coming out, Star Trek: The Next Generation – Mirror Broken #1,  which is set in the mirror universe.
This concept of a mirror universe, featuring evil versions of the noble captains we have come to know, began with The Original Series and episodes have been included in all the television iterations of Star Trek since, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise and of course: The Next Generation. The writers always have a lot of fun with this scenario, as it allows them to explore different dimensions of beloved characters and make them do sinister things they would never be allowed to get away with in the regular universe we all know and love.
Mirror Broken #1 sounds intriguing and I’m sure it will be interesting to see Picard as a different man – not the moral, honorable character we usually see him as, although it might be traumatising to some to see the personification of Star Trek’s pro-humanist message, committing acts of skullduggery.
The writer for this series is Scott Tipton and the artist is J K Woodward who also provides the cover art. It is a six issue series and is out now, published on May 10th by IDW.

New from Marvel Comics: Luke Cage #1
Tumblr media
Luke Cage returns in a new series, which brings him to New Orleans and gets him involved in some classic film noir-style escapades – including: a woman with a secret, a mysterious billionaire, violent gangs and a shadowy figure – and a link to his own past. Luke’s creator, Dr. Noah Burstein – the man who made him into the unbreakable hero – is dead and Cage is in The Big Easy for the funeral and looking for answers.
This series comes from writer David F Walker, who has worked on Luke Cage material before, with Power Man and Iron Fist comics on his resume. Nelson Blake II is the artist for this series, his previous work includes Romulus and he is certainly a talent on the rise. There are variant covers available from artists such as, Mike Deodato Jr, Leroy Davis, Rahzzah, a hip-hop version from Tim Bradstreet and a fifth which is yet to be confirmed.

Review of Marvel’s new release: Secret Empire #1
Tumblr media
Writer Nick Spencer and artist Steve McNiven bring us Secret Empire #1, which we have seen the set up to in Secret Empire #0 and Captain America: Steve Rogers,  so this story begins with us right in the action – several months after the events of Secret Empire #0. Hydra has launched a successful, widespread attack against the forces of good, they are now the ruling power – and the big news is, of course, Captain America has turned bad. Can the Avengers fight back against Hydra’s new world order?
So what is going on with Cap? Well Steve Rogers continues his descent into villainy, which is a hard thing for a lot of people to see. Captain America is currently very popular for the pro-freedom and innate goodness we see with his character in the movie trilogy – maybe the most successful comic book based trilogy that exists. So this storyline in the comics doesn’t sit well with a lot of people, is Steve being mind-controlled in some way… possibly Cosmic Cube related? Many fans believe this is the case, and there are a few things shown to support this, but we won’t spoil those here.
How will Spencer and McNiven redeem Captain America and will it be a cop out ending? That is something I am already wondering about after issue #1 – and how this series will be ultimately received, will depend on how the creators deal with this character arc.
Secret Empire is having a serious impact on the Marvel Universe and this is a pretty dark storyline, one which perhaps looks to reflect, and comment on, current political situations in the real world – something which comic books have always sought to do. This is achieved fairly well here, leaving the reader with something to think about, without beating you over the head with an opinion. Parts of this issue are viewed from the perspective of a young boy, who is not fooled by the Hydra regime and how his world has changed
This was a nice touch by Spencer, viewing this takeover through innocent eyes, makes the failures of the adults who failed to confront this danger more apparent. Amidst the drama, however, there are scenes of fun, a few laughs and some romance on display here too.

Deadpool & The Mercs For Money #9: ‘Til Death Do Us’ Part 3
Tumblr media
We are fast approaching part 3 of the 6 issue ‘Til Death Do Us’ miniseries that is taking place within the regular Deadpool & The Mercs For Money series. In the next edition Shiklah’s people demand justice and the Monster Metropolis declare war on the surface world. Deadpool must choose between succubus queen Shiklah, who is now his wife, and his role as everybody’s favorite hero.
Deadpool’s romance with the monster queen Shiklah in the earlier episodes certainly had his head spinning. The mercenary for hire stood by her side valiantly to defeat Dracula, but it looks majorly like events will be forcing Deadpool to re-evaluate the choices he has made in his life.
This issue is written by and Christopher Hastings (Vote Loki) with art by Iban Coello. Cullen Bunn, a Deadpool aficionado, is taking on the primary responsibilities of writing the The Deadpool and Mercs for Money series. Other talents that have been enlisted are writers Joshua Corin (Nuclear Winter Wonderland) and Gerry Duggan (Uncanny Avengers) and artists Salva Espin, Scott Koblish and Reilly Brown.

Novel, TV series and now comic: Neil Gaiman’s American Gods: Shadows #1
American Gods Shadows #1 is out from March 15th in comic book form, and there is also a TV series on the horizon, which will be shown on the Starz network. This series was originally a novel entitled American Gods, written by Neil Gaiman and published in 2001.
The premise of this title is that mythological creatures exist because people believe in them and immigrants have brought their spirits and gods with them to the United States. However the power that the mythological beings wield has diminished as people’s belief in them has waned, now new gods have replaced them, reflecting modern day obsessions with media and celebrity, among other things.
Several characters from the novel are present in the comic book, including protagonist Shadow Moon a down on his luck ex-convict who gets mixed up with a variety of characters, many of which are incarnations of deities, such as Mr Wednesday, who is actually the norse god Odin.
The comic is written by Gaiman himself, with art by P. Craig Russell and there are several variant covers available by the likes of Glenn Fabry, David Mack and Dave McKean.
