Wait so when you play video games it’s like you’re actually inside them, or do you have to like- move your microphone thing?

“Mm, more or less it’s the first one. I wouldn’t say I’m literally inside the game, but my subconscious state sort of mingles and intertwines with the game’s code, allowing me to view the game in an almost virtual-reality-esque concept.”

“But luckily, my physical state will remain unharmed, despite any… ill fates I might find myself suffering through while in-game.”

"Ah no, nothing so dire. I have just been... indulging myself in the genres of survival horror and MMORPG. World of Warcraft and Dead by Daylight have been my recent escapes."

Did you ever tell Naoko about the professor?

“I’ve made mention of him a couple of times... he was human after all, and you know how humans tend to fascinate her. I’ll admit even I don’t like talking about the professor sometimes. Brings back a whole lotta feelings, ones that I’d prefer to keep buried in the darkest corners of my mind.”

“Remembering it all makes me wish I could just go back... As if everything that has happened in the past twelve thousand years was just a simulation. That the professor is sitting at his desk, running this program through me like another one of those tests he used to love. Gathering information, jotting it down on his notepad, chewing the tips of his ballpoint pens like a squirrel nibbles through peanut shells... A cup of coffee resting next to him on a white cat coaster. Sometimes it would be tea... Yes. Rosemary tea. That was always his favourite.”

Poptart I think it's time you let her go above the surface

“I let her go to the surface! You think I haven’t? I don’t know who you think I am, but I am not holding Naoko hostage in the metro. She has every ample opportunity to go to the surface, but she seems to refuse to go unless I go with her. Which is touching in its own way, but it’s mostly foolish. I don’t belong up there. I never have, and never will. Other Tartars such as jazz-hands mcgee might be able to make a living for themselves, while being exposed to the public... but I... I’m not so lucky.”

“There’s no doubt in my mind that we’re just going to have a re-run of what happened last time I tried to coexist with these creatures... 10,008 and 3 probably wouldn’t give up the chance to sever my head from my pole and chuck it into the ocean. I don’t know about you, but I kind of like having a head on my shoulders.”

What is keeping you two down here anyway?

“Mainly because of Poptart’s hesitance, and fear of coming across Agent 3 and Agent 8 on the surface again. He said he isn’t ready to take that sort of risk, so us going up to the square only happens once in a blue moon. And when he actually does, he requests to be heavily disguised or shielded from view.”

“Oh, I could never! I’m much too shy to sing in public, and those lessons I took for DJ’ing back in school are long forgotten. I never learned to play any other instrument, so I’d be a lost cause in a real band,” Naoko admitted nervously, “I’ll leave the music-making to the professionals.”
