Let's analyse stuff - for science! This is the blog of a hundred thousand words, where I read far too much into far too many things. Currently Liveblogging: Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and xxxHolic, the two CLAMP series that are ruining my life. In a good way. Mostly. Posts tend to happen all at once and nothing in between, but everything is tagged and organised if there is anything you would like to skip.

This seems bad, right?
I feel like it's probably bad.
But on the other hand we only have like 6 more chapters left, including the epilogue, so HOW MUCH WORSE COULD THINGS POSSIBLY GET? SURELY NOT MUCH!
Surely we have to start fixing problems some time soon! We're running out of pages!
But that aside, thank you for watching me inch ever closer to actually seeing the end of all this. And thank you extra to everyone on Patreon who help even more!

Oh!
Plan rejected?

OH NO DON’T JUST TRADE PLACES BACK AGAIN
SUPER SAKURA PLEASE YOU HAVEN’T HAD A CONSCIOUS THOUGHT IN DECADES YOU CAN TAKE A MINUTE BEFORE THROWING YOURSELF INTO THE ETERNAL SUFFERING DEATH TUBE

OH UNLESS THEY ARE JUST TRYING TO DRAG THEM OUT IN GENERAL?
THAT WORKS TOO I LIKE THAT
But what if they all get dragged in. What happens then.
Also also also can we pause for a second to celebrate the neat little character moment that is like
Super Sakura - who is (Not!Sakura) fused with (Clone!Sakura’s empty body with all the feathers and space time coordinates etc), so we’re not entirely sure of which person she is exactly but just for the moment I’m going to assume she’s mostly Not!Sakura soul-wise.
But, Not!Sakura’s last conscious free-will moment was on her birthday, when the curse activated suddenly and then time stopped before it could kill her completely. In THAT moment, her mother sacrificed her life to save her, Fujitaka’s life was scrambled, and Lava Lamp went into the suffering time out jar for like seven years. All of that happened to save her in that one moment, and she never had the chance to react to it or express any emotion at all. She was then just frozen in time for the entire plotline until she was finally saved again. We are not sure how conscious of ANYTHING she would be beyond that, or if any time even passed for her at all.
And now HERE we are, at the end of the universe, with Sakura (who is her clone, originally) throwing herself into another tube of eternal suffering and eventual death to save Not!Sakura once again - and NOW she gets to react.
Not!Sakura WAKES HERSELF UP from her comatose state to have this reaction. This is the FIRST TIME we’ve seen her doing anything in the present, and not just seen through Lava Lamp’s memories.
And the first thing she does is GRAB Sakura’s arm and stop her from sacrificing herself.
Sakura's actions are an echo of Nadeshiko’s sacrifice all those years ago - and this time Not!Sakura actually has the agency to say no to the people throwing themselves to death to save her.
It’s also an echo to all the other character moments we’ve had in between then and ow, like Syaoran and Fai and Watanuki all struggling to learn that they can’t just throw themselves away to save other people endlessly and they are worth something alive.
And it’s another echo of what our other Sakura did in Acid Tokyo and Infinity - where she saw what everyone was suffering to save her every time and decided to step and and stop them and choose her own destiny instead, even with consequences.
So Super!Sakura’s first choice we see in the present is stopping Sakura from sacrificing herself for her and taking back her own agency in the moment.
And I just really like that!
#I just love the whole back and forth of this throughout the series#Of characters taking back their choices#And trying to stop the cycle of self sacrifice#And HOW INTERESTING that it’s SAKURA being stopped now#By another Sakura! For another Sakura!#Liveblogging the reservoir chronicle#Tsubasa#Vol 227#Sakura#Syaoran#Lava Lamp Guy#Super Sakura#Not!Sakura#The idea of stealing agency#Even for GOOD intentions#And even for SAVING someone#Is SUCH a fascinating latticework all the way through

They have declined the request!
I’m guessing this is the big moment where Lava Lamp and Super Sakura would have just been dragged inside the Jam Jar - but now Sakura and Syaoran are directly fighting it off to try stop it.
And naturally Evil Wolverine retaliates by instantly casting fireball. He is very creative you see.

OH IT’S WORKING THOUGH?
He successfully distracted Sakura and Syaoran badly enough that his spell actually got through and started dragging the other two away. So much so that Fai and Kurogane are adding in their own attacks to try stop Evil Wolverine as well now - which seem to hit him, but not enough to stop him.
It’s like an all out ugly brawl at this point everyone is just panicking all at once.

And I believe this is Sakura and Syaoran barging their way into the spell to prevent it from taking the others instead?

Oh yup there we go! Sakura and Syaoran have thrown themselves in instead to save Lava Lamp and Super Sakura.
Which - horrible!
But on the plus side it would mean they have successfully saved their child, even if it meant throwing themselves in harm's way instead. As they were prepared for.
I suppose this also comes down to the gamble they were talking about from a few chapters ago - they weren’t sure if throwing themselves in THIS Jam Jar would successfully change the future at all, since they are so similar to Lava Lamp and Super Sakura, so they tried to stop it from happening at all. FAILING that, they’ve thrown themselves in anyway to save their son and just hope that it will be different enough to save the way the future was turning out.
I’m pretty optimistic though! It leaves more players out here in the open to try and deal with whatever Evil Wolverine is doing.
#Even though they can’t like#Actually stop him from doing anything#Any time they actually want to#BUT STILL#Super Sakura hasn’t tried yet#And there’s still that feather from xxxholic#Where did that end up#Oh in Mokona’s earring!#The other Mokona though#Liveblogging the reservoir chronicle#Tsubasa#Vol 227#Evil Wolverine#Sakura#Syaoran#Lava Lamp Guy#Super Sakura#Fai#Kurogane#Mokona#Me listing all the hidden items they have still#Like this is a D&D session and the combat is going badly#WHICH IS NOT FAR WRONG

WELL THERE WE GO! The full explanation of the original Jam Jar plot that Syaoran and Sakura were trying to prevent, back in... this chapter.
Here at the end of time Evil Wolverine was going to shove them in the Jam Jar to pay for his Time Travel so he could try find an extra Yuuko. And then he would just keep them suffering endlessly until he eventually killed them.
No wonder Sakura and Syaoran wanted to prevent that.
Does this also mean that the time Sakura and Syaoran spent in the Jam Jar has prepaid this? Did they do their switch to prevent Lava Lamp and Super Sakura from having to go in?
OR did they spend their time in the Jam Jar to pay for their own time travel, so they could just stop all of it from happening in the first place? I think it's probably that one right? They just needed to use the Jam Jar to time travel back to THIS moment to try and prevent Evil Wolverine using the Jam Jar himself, so that Lava Lamp would never end up inside it in the first place.
And it only got a little confusing on the reader-end because they talked about whether they could go inside the Jam Jar in Lava Lamp's place, and then went inside the Jam Jam to time travel - but it wasn't THAT Jam Jar Ride they were even discussing, it was the one that hadn't happened yet. Two unrelated but visibly identical Jam Jar Rides.
#I know I keep asking these questions AS the scene as happening#TELL ME EVIL WOLVERINE#TELL ME FASTER#Liveblogging the reservoir chronicle#Tsubasa#Vol 227#Evil Wolverine#Sakura#Super Sakura#Syaoran#Lava Lamp Guy#Kind of an interesting device really#Like could you pay for any wish that way?#Pick what you want then jump inside for years of suffering and then get what you want?

And now this is ABSOLUTELY fascinating.
We’re confirming what we saw in action in Lava Lamp’s backstory that was a little confusing at the time, but now is clearer - Evil Wolverine himself can grant wishes, or at the very least he can turn back time. And so, he can grant people’s wishes to turn back time.
AND it looks like he can just PICK who pays a price for whatever he wants to do. Which we kind of already knew in practice but getting him state it outloud really hammers home the difference between him and people like Clow and Yuuko. Yuuko in particular was very careful about prices and balancing the wish/cost ratio in every situation, to keep both the universe and people’s individual lives running without unintended consequences.
Evil Wolverine on the other hand is willing to do anything he wants and shove the price of his time reversals onto whoever is useful.
It is antithetical to Yuuko’s morals and also not really how the universe works. Which might also be why he hangs out so far outside normal reality to begin with, to prevent things working back around and taking any price from him instead. Which may have also in turn contributed to the universe and logic itself falling apart.
Either way it’s completely wild to see in action.
All that aside he’s now going to just search the entire universe for any other reality where Yuuko is still alive and that in itself is also completely fascinating to me.
He is desperate in a way that makes me think he won’t find what he’s looking for at all, but on the other hand like… could we get him to do a search for Clow Reed? I’d like to see the results of that most of all.
#I have questions#Not even the questions Evil Wolverine is asking#But always questions#Liveblogging the reservoir chronicle#Tsubasa#Vol 227#Evil Wolverine#Yuuko Ichihara#Sakura#Super Sakura#Fai#Kurogane#Mokona#Like do I think he will succeed?#Not really#But I have been wrong before#I wonder if people can be Unique in the universe#Or like at the very least people can End Up in unique experiences#Like an AU Yuuko wouldn’t have the endless years of Dimension witch experience#Because that was a mistake made by Clow#And like even if he DID find another Yuuko#Doesn’t he need Super Sakura in the Yuuko Slot for this power to work?#So he couldn’t put Yuuko back without it ending his Sakura Plot#Or could he?#I suppose we’ll see

He’s falling back on wanting to do the things that Clow didn’t, which is a bit of a surprise. Evil Wolverine might actually need Yuuko to achieve his goal (unconfirmed) but as he’s describing it in the moment he only wants to revive her to prove he’s better than Clow.
Which is even more pathetic when you realise the only reason Clow never revived Yuuko wasn’t because he couldn’t, but because he knew he shouldn’t. He was probably capable of it. She was partially revived from a thought he had. Imagine if he had actually tried.
But anyway Evil Wolverine has whipped out YET ANOTHER Jam Jar to put people inside.
Since we don’t really know where these are coming from it’s unclear whether there are just a lot of these out there or if this is genuinely the same Jam Jar every time, but just at different points in the timeline.
Like in hindsight it makes sense that the one that Sakura and Syaoran hopped in (and inherited from their family) was the same one that Yuuko had, since it was given to her once they’d already hopped in. And then the same Sakura, but past version, hopped into the Jam Jar AFTER her next life did, but went to the dream world instead of staying inside.
The next question would be: Is THIS the same Jam Jar again? And if so, is Evil Wolverine’s ownership of the Jam Jar BEFORE or AFTER all this - like, is he a figure from EARLIER in the Clow Reed ancestry than Syaoran, or did it make his way to him AFTER Yuuko had it?
And! Will they just tell us this on page in a few minutes and all this speculation was for nothing.
#It’s usually that last one#But also full points to Clamp for getting 227 chapters in#And we still don’t even know what the jam jar is called#Even Syaoran has to call it ‘that thing’#We just don’t know#Liveblogging the reservoir chronicle#Tsubasa#Vol 227#Evil Wolverine#Syaoran#Lava Lamp Guy#And Return of the Jam Jar

About Tumblr
I’ll add this to the pinned post as well but on the off chance that Tumblr does suddenly disappear and take this whole blog with it you will be able to find me on Patreon under the same name.
And don’t worry - it doesn’t cost anything by default. In case you haven’t used Patreon before you can follow someone without paying anything, and any communications from me there would be free and viewable by anyone. Paying anything on Patreon is always entirely optional.
What would my plan be if Tumblr disappears? Who knows! I’ll save the actual decisions for if it actually happens, but I’ve always had a few options in mind every time Tumblr threatened to disappear in the past.
On the plus side I have finally managed to download an entire updated archive of the blog just this week so nothing will be irreplaceable, and we can move forward in a new place if we need to.
#Not to encourage any rumours over Tumblr disappearing or anything#But just in case!#Nick also talks about other things#Liveblogging the reservoir chronicle#It took nine days for the download link to finish compiling everything#I’m oddly touched that the file size is so ridiculous

I've been re-reading Tsubasa and going through your liveblogs again and I just realized something: if Watanuki and Syaoran share a childhood and little Syaoran (aka Lava Lamp) had some kind of martial arts training, then doesn't that mean that Watanuki did too? And even if he forgot it, he still knows it because the body remembers etc, etc. I feel like it raises interesting possibilities....
Extremely hard to say! Of the naturally occurring clones we see (ie, the ones generated by the universe to fill an empty space, like Sakura and Watanuki) I don’t think we ever see them experiencing either memories or body memories from their other self.
I’m not sure if there even would be technical memories for them to remember, since “their" body didn’t actually exist during those memories. The body that experienced those memories IS still there (ie, Not!Sakura and Lava Lamp still exist in the universe) and their new body was created after their other self disappeared.
But! It IS possible, like you say, that the universe “copied” their body to make the new person, which would mean they would inherit the body memories too. I don’t know if we’ve seen any proof that that might be the case.
The one example I can remember is Syaoran having flashes of movement coming from Lava Lamp in Shura. But there are a couple of question marks about that to begin with - ie, Syaoran being created by Evil Wolverine instead of the universe (though it’s possible he used the same method as the universe for Syaoran, instead of his complicated soul replacement method he used for clones like Kyle), and Lava Lamp having a live connection to Syaoran through their shared eye at the time.
Syaoran didn’t really inherit any of Lava Lamp’s fighting techniques or magic outside of this one moment, so if I HAD to guess I would say “probably not” to Watanuki having martial arts body memories - with an added “but it’s possible!” since the rules are murky and the timeline is falling apart anyway.
#I'm very happy to be proven wrong if anyone else knows more#I think it depends entirely on if a clone is a NEW body#whisked up brand new in the moment#Or if a clone is a Ctrl C + Ctrl V#which is unclear!#The Kyle method is a hard No but I'm not sure about the others#replies#Liveblogging the reservoir chronicle#witharthurkirkland#clone math#tsubasa#xxxholic

?
Did he… need her alive for this?
Is that why the dream had to end. To prevent his universe hack.

At face value his sincere shock over her death made me a little suspicious that Yuuko might have been his precious person - but that raises a lot of questions that I can’t possibly answer so maybe I’ll just put a pin in that until he gets to say some more.
More likely he just wants to revive her so he can use her to revive his actual precious person.
Though since this is the end of the chapter anyway, wouldn’t that be such an interesting way to tie the plot together? If Evil Wolverine’s unnamed and mysterious person he wants to bring back from the dead was Yuuko Ichihara? Or maybe more specifically whatever her original name was - since Yuuko is an assumed name. And if the reason WHY she was using an assumed name wasn’t just for mysterious mystical protection reasons, but specifically because she was breaking connection with him?
Not only would that CLOSE that mystery, since Evil Wolverine's person wouldn't be a person we’ve never met but a person we know extremely well, but it’d also be an incredible surprise since I never would have expected that, ever. That never once occurred to me. I’m sure other people probably had that on their bingo card but I’d never thought they would be connected from their opposition everywhere throughout the entire plot.
And IF that ended up true, what would their connection be? Like I assumed Evil Wolverine was bringing back his significant other, but Yuuko was clearly in love with Clow - so I don’t know, what if she was his daughter, or granddaughter? Or mother?
Of course that’s assuming that Evil Wolverine isn’t a clone of Clow Reed. Or if Yuuko herself is a clone of the person Evil Wolverine actually cares about.
The clone maths never ends. Let's just stop thinking there before I spiral all week long.

I guess Evil Wolverine got tired of waiting!

I mean way to ruin the moment.
He must be mad.
And maybe... jealous?
Though now that I mention that I wonder how this feels for him.
He has done SO MUCH and is STILL in the middle of doing SO MUCH to try and get his precious person back.
And now here he is, fighting to make it finally actually happen - and it’s interrupted to see OTHER PEOPLE get their precious people back instead.
It might be worse that it’s his enemies. It might be worse that they were his pawns that he thought he was using to achieve HIS goals, but instead he’s watching them achieve theirs!
It might be even worse that he MADE some of these people, as fake people that didn’t matter to him, and HERE THEY ARE having the loving family reunion that HE doesn’t get.
And I think worse still is that they didn’t even have to break the universe to get it. He had to break everything to get even close to getting what he wanted, but they didn’t. They didn’t have to do any of that and they still get their dead loved ones returned to them in a loving reunion from beyond the grave WITHOUT breaking the universe at all!
And like yeah, in the natural course of things they did kind of get unusual treatment - since they not only reincarnated but managed to keep their memories. But! They only reason they got to keep their memories in the first place is because Evil Wolverine created them as fake people.
So, the clones he created to help HIM get his loved one back, are instead able to come back from the dead completely naturally and reunite with everyone they love BECAUSE of the way Evil Wolverine used them in the first place.
He must be livid.
#Which is wonderful#I love this for him#Not only to be undone by people loving each other#But to have his bad treatment of them CAUSE THEIR REUNION#He GAVE THEM free resurrection ACCIDENTALLY#Wow what an L#How does it feel Evil Wolverine#Liveblogging the reservoir chronicle#Tsubasa#Vol 226#Evil Wolverine#And… everyone else too I guess#Mokona#Fai#Kurogane#Sakura#Syaoran#Lava Lamp Guy#Super Sakura#Not that they get to do much#But Mokona gets a line!#That counts!

I. Love. This.
I love the tender touch that Syaoran uses.
I love that it’s so gentle.
I love that it’s so warm.
I love that it’s such a direct moment of physical closeness - which is rare enough in itself, but it gets to be between these two who need this sentiment established so badly.
I love that Syaoran is affirming his unconditional love.
I love that Syaoran is saying that he was precious to him in BOTH senses.
I love that neither way he loves him cancels out or affects the other.
I love that this is the first time they get to talk about this big thing hanging over them. Lava Lamp only just learned about it at all. They never really talked during the clone years. And the very first thing Syaoran establishes when they DO get to talk about it all is that he loves him.
I love that Lava Lamp GETS this moment.
I love that THIS is his big reunion with his parents.
I love that you can see how much it affects him even just from his eyes alone.
And I love that they use TOUCH to communicate this, since Lava Lamp is just… so touch starved. He spent seven years alone in a giant tube and everything after that was endlessly complicated, but he gets THIS to re-establish that love all over again.
I love that he went into his Flashback arc expecting Fai and Kurogane to abandon him - he was expecting to be alone, because he always has been, all the way through this all. Sometimes physically, sometimes emotionally, and sometimes because he was forced to keep secrets from everyone around him.
I love that this is his biggest failure reversing itself - he traded away the ability to ever see his parents again in order to save Not!Sakura, which he failed at! BUT HERE THEY ARE, FORCING THEMSELVES BACK TO HIM.
I love that he ISN'T ALONE ANYMORE, and might never be again!
I just love it.

HONESTLY THAT’S A FAIR DEAL
Kurogane has built this family from the ground up NO MORE DYING WITHOUT HIS PERMISSION.
I love Mokona’s faux stern little look as she holds the sword up. AND FAI’S OPEN LOVING GAZE.
AND LAVA LAMP’S OPEN AMAZEMENT AT HIS INCLUSION IN THE FAMILY TOO.
This is the incredible family reunion of our dreams.
Now I just need them all to hug.

I MEAN CLOSE ENOUGH.
Meaningful glances with your parents after you’re finally reunited for the first time in at least 14 years (and possibly more) is still pretty good!
Also it makes me very happy that Evil Wolverine is just genuinely put on the back burner while they deal with their emotional reunion first and no-one even thinks to give him any attention.

I love how it doesn’t matter if they’ve died and reincarnated or if they’re maybe possibly older than Kurogane themselves now, they’re still in trouble with their dad for making him worry.
Do they even know how far past curfew they are.
Several decades at least!
But the open protectiveness is a DELIGHT, and it’s the best possible way to cut right through all the complicated time loop paradox complications and resume their relationship exactly where it left off.

AND IT MADE THEM SO HAPPY TO SEE IT!
