modern day trick where Alicia visits her brother at Broke Jaw Ranch and the whole prepper ranch thing really catches peoples attention, so suddenly her fun little tiktoks go from 50 views consisting of her peers to thousands of strangers asking a million questions. so she ropes Troy into posting on his own account (that he 100% doesn't run. let's be honest, he doesn't even own a cell phone) because he's spreading the word, helping people prepare so they won't start trouble in the end times, exactly what his father used to do with the tapes. naturally people make up all kinds of assumptions about him, the ranch, and what kind of people live in a place like that. religious nuts, cultists, right-wing losers. but then he starts lore dropping every ten videos or so like, "you need two people to set this up, today my husband Nick will be assisting me—" & "teaching your children early on is essential to survival. Nick and I have an eight year old daughter—" & "My Nick is a former addict, so locking up the medicine is just as important as ensuring we have enough—" and he'll never know the uproar in the comments, Alicia only shares the questions people have about prepping and uploads the responses and giggles to herself about the whole thing

I have a fic in my drafts about Nick meeting the Otto brothers while they're volunteering at a shelter he frequents, and chooses to go to the ranch as an alternative to going to rehab again. naturally Nick and Troy fall in love, the ranch is kind to them, including Jeremiah (Madison still sucks, but she only visits so it's okay), and they live a very happy life together pre-apocalypse. this idea was born from that fic but isn't actually in it so I figured I'd share it here rather than let it rot away in my phone
