With winter right around the corner and hopefully cooler temps along with it. It’s time to start incorporating winter colors into my wardrobe. This leads one to wonder, what are the hottest colors this season? What should I be adding to my winter wardrobe? Luckily for you and I both, each season Pantone puts together a fashion color trend report. This report highlights the top colors seen at NYFW and in the designers’ upcoming collections. This season’s top colors range from variations of traditional seasonal hues to fun and unexpected new ones. Today I’ll be going over some of my favorites as well as sharing some must-have pieces in these colors:

MY FAVORITE WINTER WARDROBE COLORS

VALIANT POPPY

Shades of red are probably one of the first colors that come to mind for most when thinking about winter wardrobe colors. Certainly, for me it is, and this year is no different. Bright, cheerful and festive valiant poppy is rich in tone and perfect for the season as an accessory like a purse or studded shoe to a stunning holiday party dress. This shade is complimentary of almost all skin tones and hair colors making it a must-have this winter!

This color could have a more fitting name. Its elegant tones make it a perfect color worn dressed up or down. I am majorly crushing on this top paired with these jeans, bag and these stunning shoes.   PINK PEACOCK

Y’all know I love pink, and pink in almost any shade is easy to pull off in spring or summer. For winter though, that can seem a little trickier.  However, this season’s beautifully vibrant pink peacock shade is far from hard to style for the season. A few of my favorites are this chunky cardigan from Chicwish. This can easily be paired with your everyday tee shirt and jeans for a little flair. Also, I’m dying over this adorable dress and how good it would look with black tights, pumps, and a black glitter clutch.  Great for a holiday party or just a Saturday night out on the town.

  CEYLON YELLOW

This bright and spicy shade of yellow is giving me all the fall feels and I can’t wait to bring it on through to my winter wardrobe as well. My favorite pieces for the winter season are this waffle sweater paired with this check skirt. I would also wear this with a pair of tights (navy) for a touch of added warmth and navy flats like these.

  MEERKAT

Steering away from the cooler, dark brown shades of seasons past and into the warm and inviting shade, meerkat. This shade is beautiful worn as boots, bags and chunky knit sweaters. It is especially flattering on light to medium skin tones and really warms up those with cooler winter complections. My favorite pieces are this over the shoulder angora sweater and this long shag jacket.

When done right, stacking bracelets can make the simplest outfit look polished and put together. There are a few things to avoid when stacking because if it’s done wrong, it could end up looking less than desirable. Today, we will be reviewing common stacking pitfalls, how to avoid them, tips for achieving the perfect stack, and of course where to go to get these must-have pieces.

HOW TO MIX AND MATCH

Mixing and matching is an essential part of achieving the perfect bracelet stack.

Adding color is a super easy way to change your stack. Whether you choose a pink leather wrap or a small beaded strand, keeping your outfit for the day in mind when choosing color pops is crucial. You’ll want to be sure to go with coordinating colors and avoid ones that may clash.

An all-metal bracelet stack is a classic look that is easy to achieve and you probably already own a few to get started with.  Metals like gold, rose gold, silver, and platinum go together very well.

Try mixing different sizes and textures like a leather wrap with bangles and even a link and a watch.

Avoid overshadowing small pieces by not pairing them with extra large bangles or cuffs.

When it comes to mixing and matching be creative, have fun and let your personal style show!

SIZING

Sizing is mostly personal preference, how much do you like them to move around on your arm? Do you want them to stay firm on your wrist or hang over your hand? Once you’ve decided on those then you’ll want to consider the size of your wrist (or the widest part of your hand for bangles). If you prefer your stack to be snugger, opt for smaller bracelets and place the smaller ones near your hand to help keep the others in place.

WHAT TO WEAR IT WITH

A simple tee shirt and jeans, a  little black dress or even an awesome pair of joggers and heels. Just keep the outfit simple and avoid going overboard with statement pieces like big flashy necklaces. Instead, choose smaller understated necklace and stud earrings.

HOW MANY SHOULD I STACK?

Depending on the size of the bracelets you’ve chosen and the look you’re going for the quantity can vary significantly.

If you’re incorporating a watch or larger pieces into your stack then keep the number between four and seven.

With small beaded strands (or any thin bracelets) you can and should wear many more.

As a general rule, you don’t want to cover more than a third of your forearm. Unless that’s the look you’re going for 😉

  While an arm full of tiny colorful bracelets has its place (like at a festival) don’t forget that variety is key when creating that perfect, visually appealing stack.  Try to avoid the temptation to throw on a matching set of bangles (even if you got a killer deal on them at target) and only wear a few and toss the rest back in your jewelry box and mix it up.

One of the chicest and one of my personal favorite accessories right now is silk scarves. No longer are they for simply draping around your neck, there are so many fun new ways to wear them. Today I’ll be going over my 6 favorite ways to wear a silk scarf and tips on how to achieve the look.

Six fun and different ways to wear a  silk scarf

1. Use the scarf as a handbag accessory

Using a silk scarf wrapped around the handle of your handbag is a super chic and easy way instantly update any bag. Starting on one side, simply wrap the scarf from one end of the handle to the other as loose or tight as you please to achieve the desired look. Another cute way to dress up your bag is to tie the scarf in a bow at the base of a handle.

2. Silk scarf as a bandana

Wearing a square scarf like a bandana is a trend I have really grown fond of recently.  I especially love the look when the ends are wrapped back around to the front, then tied, but that’s totally optional 😉.

3. Use the scarf as a hair accessory

Along with dry shampoo, folding a square scarf and throwing it over your head is a great way to disguise 2nd or 3rd-day hair. Plus it looks Jackie O chic, and who wouldn’t want that. Wearing your scarf as a headband with a messy bun or low pony is easy and a perfect way to look put together on busy mornings. Using a longer scarf, start at the nape of the neck bringing the ends up to the top. Tie it off either with a bow or knot. Last, Using any size scarf you desire, tie it in a knot or bow around your low bun, ponytail, or top knot.

  5. Use the scarf as a belt

I am totally obsessed with this entire look from Wendy Nguyen of Wendy’s Lookbook. She is truly the epitome of chic style. I love how she used this scarf as a belt for a shirtdress. Don’t limit yourself to only wearing scarves as a belt with dresses though. Try them with jeans, skirts, and shorts too. Get creative and have fun. After all, that’s what fashion is all about!

6. Wear around your wrist or ankle

Wearing a silk scarf wrapped around your wrist or ankle is such a fun way to dress up a simple tee shirt and jeans look. Using a small square scarf, wrap the scarf around your wrist and tie the ends with only a small amount left out. Or if you’re uncoordinated like me and can’t tie things with just one hand. Find someone nearby to do it for you 🤦‍♀️.

4. Tie the scarf around your neck

While there are quite a few different ways to wear a silk scarf, wearing it around your neck remains a classic. For the first look take a large square scarf, fold it in half. Start with the center in front of you and wrap the ends around the back of your neck and to the front again tying it off to the side. The second look you’ll need a long thin scarf. Wrap it around your neck twice then tie it off leaving the ends hanging. For the third look, a smaller scarf is needed. following the same steps as the one before. You will wrap the shorter silk scarf around you kneck twice then tie.

I’m so excited to be sharing with y’all my review of the Bobbi Brown Skin Long Wear Foundation.  I am a firm believer that all makeup should be “long wear”. I mean let’s be real, no one would want their makeup to crease or vanish mid-workday, am-i-right?!.

Living in Dallas where most of the year is ridiculously hot and moderately humid, I am always on the hunt for a skin-perfecting foundation that will even out my skin tones without feeling like I’m wearing a mask. For one that has a luminous finish while still being matte enough to control shine throughout the day. And last is one that won’t settle into my fine lines when I smile and will stay put all day. Along the way, I’ve found a few others that have come close to meeting my high standards. Here are the pros and cons of a few of my favorite top-rated long wear foundations. So let’s see how the Bobbi Brown Skin fares compared to these other foundations.

Estee Lauder double wear foundation.

Pros: It is most definitely long wear! It claims to last 24 hours and while I personally have never had the need to leave it on quite that long, I totally believe it would make it at least that long.

It is a very full coverage, perfect for those bad skin days, family photos or even the pool as it’s waterproof.

Comes in 50+ shades

Oil-free

Matte finish

  Cons:  It is very heavy for a liquid foundation and looks very heavy on the skin making it very obvious you are wearing it, not a natural feel.

Because the formula is so heavy and tacky it feels like you have a rubbery film on your face.

 It does settle into fine lines as the day progresses.

Super hard to wash off at the end of the day.

With that said this is one, I do own and use it on occasion, just not as frequently as I used to.

Pros: It’s a concentrate so a little will go a very long way.

Very full coverage.

Does a great job evening out skin tone.

24-hour wear.

Matte finish.

Light on the skin so it looks less cakey.

  Cons: It takes a bit of work to apply evenly.

Clings to dry patches.

Comes in 22 shades and can be hard to find your perfect match.

The packaging is THE WORST! So bad in fact that it’s the reason I rarely reach for it anymore. If you are like me and like things clean and neat then this will drive you crazy too and I’d recommend getting a different product altogether.

Georgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

Pros: Goes on smooth and weightless.

Medium, buildable coverage.

30 shades with varying undertones so there is something for everyone.

Looks natural on the skin.

Luminous finish even on the dryest skin types.

Feels silky and light.

Stays put all day.

Doesn’t crease, streak or settle throughout the day.

  Cons: Honestly I don’t really have a con for this one except for the price. It’s a whopping $64 for the standard size (30ml) and $42 for the travel size (18ml).

BOBBI BROWN SKIN LONG-WEAR FOUNDATION

Ok, I’m just going to jump right in and say that this is probably my favorite foundation to date. It is comparable to the Georgio Armani Luminous Silk foundation but at a significantly lower price point.

Ingredients

This oil-free, non-acne causing formula has natural mineral powders to help control excess oil and shine, glycerin for refreshing hydration and “marine sugar cane” algae extract. It also has SPF 15, which is just a happy bonus and one less layer in the morning. 👍🏻👍🏻

Coverage & Texture

This fantastic foundation is full coverage. It smoothes out imperfections and discolorations in the skin but without making you look over made up. It truly feels like a second skin, it comes in 30 beautiful light-reflecting shades and has a satiny and weightless feel. No matter what your skin type (oily or dry) you will love that it is neither too matte or too dewy and will leave you looking flawless all day.

Side note: When I test these foundations I NEVER use primers, setting sprays or powders that way I can get a good feel of how the foundation itself will perform and be able to give a fair and honest review. 

Long wear foundation benefits

This is where the Bobbi Brown foundation really shines. It is a 16-hour wear and it does-not-budge! Like not at all! As with the Double-Wear, I think it actually lasts much longer. My skin literally looked the same after a day full of play dates, doctors appointments, carpools and as many trips to Target as it takes to finally remember the diapers we were completely out of.  This amazing formula is flexible and moves with our skin. It legit DOES NOT settle into fine lines, crease or cling to dry patches, seriously not at all!

WHAT IS HEV LIGHT?

What is HEV light? HEV light is The blue/violet part of this visible spectrum with a high energy level and is known as High Energy Visible Light (HEV, HEVL or Blue Light).  While most of us are aware of the effects of UVB and UVA rays, The dangers of visible light are less commonly known. The sunlight spectrum consists of both visible and invisible light. Visible light accounts for 50% of the sunlight spectrum and is the only part that can be seen by the human eye (UVA, UVB and Infrared Light are invisible).

  MOST COMMON SOURCES OF HEV LIGHT?

Sunlight is the most common source of natural HEV light. When light travels from the sun the high energy blue wavelengths collide with the air molecules causing blue light to scatter everywhere.

Unlike the invisible UVA and UVB radiation, which is not a concern after dark, the threat from blue (HEV) light doesn’t stop when the sun sets. Some of the most common sources of artificial blue light are things we use hours each day for both work and pleasure.  these include TVs, computer screens, laptops, smart phones and tablets. Also to blame are Fluorescent and LED lighting as well as blue light emitting, at-home light devices for acne.  Due to the rise in digital screen technology over the years, many of today’s electronic devices use LED backlight technology to help enhance screen brightness and clarity.  These LEDs emit very strong blue light waves and Because of their gaining popularity, we are being exposed to more and more sources of blue light and for longer periods of time.

THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF HEV LIGHT ON YOUR SKIN

Skin damage caused by UVA and UVB rays are well known and are visible almost immediately, in the form of suntans or burns. The dangers of blue light, however, have yet to be as highly publicized. HEV light penetrates the skin deeper causing photoaging. Because HEV light is not only emitted by the sun but also from our favorite devices we use or are exposed to all day, the damage is intensified.

Premature sagging and wrinkling: Like UVA rays, HEV Light generates free radicals (also known as Reactive Oxygen Species or ROS). These free radicals cause skin cells to produce enzymes that break down the collagen and elastin that give skin its youthful appearance. Research has shown that HEV Light influences skin condition and causes the skin to age prematurely (sag and develop deep wrinkles before its time).

Hyperpigmentation/ Age spots: Dr Murad, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Murad Skincare, explains to Refinery29, “Excessive blue light accelerates the oxidation process, causing hyperpigmentation, its oxidative effects elicit inflammation and damage the skin barrier making it more prone to signs of aging, increased uneven skin tone, dullness, pigmentation, and fine lines and wrinkles”.

Dark under-eye circles: Research from Estée Lauder demonstrates that blue light exposure at night impacts the natural circadian rhythm of skin cells themselves. Dr Nadine Pernodet, Estée Lauder Companies’ scientific spokesperson, explains the findings of their testing: “Results indicate that exposure to blue light at night can throw skin’s natural circadian rhythm ‘out-of-sync’, causing skin cells to continue to ‘think’ it is daytime, impacting their natural nighttime repair process, which can lead to visible signs of aging, including dark under-eye circles.”

MORE WAYS HEV LIGHT IS HARMFUL

Vision: Almost all visible blue light passes through the cornea and lens and reaches the retina. This light may affect vision and could prematurely age the eyes, causing digital eyestrain and retina damage Over time this can cause vision problems like age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Sleep patterns: Studies conducted in Europe draw conclusions that night time exposure of HEV light disrupts your body’s natural production of Melatonin.  Dr. Charles Czeisler of Harvard Medical School showed, in 1981, that daylight keeps a person’s internal clock aligned with the environment.  While light of any kind can suppress the secretion of melatonin, blue light at night does so more powerfully. Harvard researchers and their colleagues conducted an experiment comparing the effects of 6.5 hours of exposure to blue light to exposure to green light of comparable brightness. The blue light suppressed melatonin for about twice as long as the green light and shifted circadian rhythms by twice as much (3 hours vs. 1.5 hours). –Harvard health letter

HOW TO PROTECT AGAINST HEV LIGHT SKIN DAMAGE

Luckily there some pretty simple and relatively inexpensive ways to protect yours from the effects of blue light damage.

Be sure to use antioxidant-rich,  broad-spectrum sunscreen EVERY DAY and a good repair serum at night.

Avoid looking at bright screens beginning two to three hours before bed. This will help your sleep patterns

Enable the “night mode” settings on your phone permanently, which significantly reduces the blue light in favor of harmless yellow light.

Install blue light shields that block the blue light from your phones, tablets and computer monitors. This will protect your skin & eyes!

It improves our mood, keeps us alert and can even enhance memory.  Your body uses blue light from the sun to regulate your natural sleep and wake cycles. Not enough exposure to sunlight in children could affect the growth and development of the eyes and vision. So grab your sunnies, some good sunscreen and get out there and enjoy the sun! (safely of course 😉).
