After the incident at the Yukimura main house, Hijikata sat alone in his study, sipping sake. The candlelight barely illuminated his face, hiding traces of fatigue and deep sadness. The room was heavy with silence, broken only by the soft clinking of glass and the whisper of the wind outside the window. Harada, his loyal friend, noticed that Hijikata was lost in his thoughts. He entered the study silently, knowing that his presence might be just what was needed right now. "Drinking alone, Hijikata-san?" Harada asked cautiously, stopping at the door. His voice was soft, but there was concern for his friend in it. Hijikata raised his head, and his gaze, usually firm and determined, was now filled with sadness. "Oh, is that you, Harada?" he answered, trying to hide his emotions. "Why are you standing in the doorway, rooted to the spot?" Come in. I don't mind your company. Harada nodded gratefully and sat down at the table across from Hijikata. He noticed that his friend looked depressed, and it made his heart clench. "Judging by your face, something unpleasant has happened, huh, Hijikata-san?" Harada asked softly, trying not to put pressure on his friend. "How did you guess?" Hijikata sighed, lowering his head. "We've known each other for a while," Harada answered calmly, filling his glass with sake. "I can tell when something's wrong." Hijikata paused, collecting his thoughts. He knew Harada wouldn't judge him, but he still felt obligated to share. "It's not just unpleasant. It's deserved," he finally said, looking straight into his friend's eyes. Harada raised his eyebrows in surprise. "Deserved? What are you talking about?" — He asked again, not fully understanding what Hijikata meant. Hijikata sighed heavily and, taking a sip of sake, told his friend what had happened. — Soji slept with Chizuru. Because I couldn't save Kondo. It seems he had been planning to do this for a long time, ever since he learned of his execution. I understand him, Harada. This is his revenge. But it seems he did it for more than that. It seems he is in love with Chizuru, too. Harada nodded thoughtfully, digesting what he had heard. He knew Chizuru better than anyone else in the squad, and he understood that she could be more than just a friend or ally to many.
— I think he has been in love with her for a long time, after she appeared in our squad, — Harada said thoughtfully. — I was always surprised how such a fragile girl like Chizuru ended up among us. Even Ito was surprised. But she's not like everyone else. If she has women's business, as is proper, then no matter how much I told her about it, she stuck to her guns. You can't argue with someone like Chizuru. Hijikata grinned, remembering their recent conversation.
Yes, it's useless to argue with her. She's a woman from Edo. If she's decided that her choice is right, there's no point in arguing with her. Even if it seems stupid or wrong.
Be glad that you have such a wife, Hijikata-san, - Harada said quietly, looking at his friend. - And take care of her. Otherwise, Soji will take her away from you. I'm in love with her too, but I've already resigned myself and given in. Hijikata frowned, but didn't argue. He knew Harada was right.
Somehow I don't pay attention to it, - he answered, looking away. - Besides, I trust all of you. And I can only trust you with my wife. We've been through a lot together. "You can't say that," Harada nodded. "Chizuru went through a lot to find her father. But her adoptive father didn't even understand it. Nor did her so-called brother, whom she forced to kill so that he wouldn't ruin her life anymore. She saw a lot of death at the Battle of Toba-Fushima, and many wounded Shinsengumi warriors died before her eyes.
The biggest blow to her was Gen-san's death. He died before her eyes, and I couldn't help her. Hijikata gritted his teeth, remembering that day. Gen-san was his friend, his loyal comrade. And now he was dead. "Gen-san's death isn't just your fault, Hijikata-san," Harada said softly, trying to support his friend. "We're all to blame. Me, you, all of us." "You're right," Hijikata agreed quietly, lowering his head. "I couldn't save him. I couldn't protect him." Harada paused, considering his words. He knew Hijikata needed support, and he decided that now was the time to act. "Hijikata-san, if you don't mind, I'll talk to Soji myself," he said, looking straight into his friend's eyes. "I know how to persuade. You know me." Hijikata sighed, but nodded. "I'll be glad if you do that," he said, looking up. "Thank you." "Okay. I'll talk to him," Harada replied firmly. "Don't worry, Hijikata-san. We'll handle it." Hijikata nodded gratefully and went back to his thoughts. Harada stood up, about to leave, but at that moment Chizuru appeared from around the corner. She stood silently, watching them, a small, barely noticeable smile playing on her face. "Are you leaving already?" she asked quietly, coming closer. Harada turned around, surprised by her appearance. "Chizuru? What are you doing here?" he asked, trying to hide his surprise. "I just wanted to check on you," she replied, sitting down at the table opposite them. "You both look tired." "We're just talking," Hijikata said, trying not to show his emotions. "Nothing special." Chizuru looked at him, then turned her gaze to Harada. "Thank you, Harada," she said quietly, smiling. "I know you're always willing to help." Harada smiled back, feeling his heart fill with warmth. He knew Chizuru would always be there for him, no matter what. "Anything for you, Chizuru," he said, standing up. "I'll go, but don't worry. We'll figure it out." Chizuru nodded, watching him go. When the door closed behind Harada, she turned to Hijikata. "It'll be okay, Hijikata-san," she said, placing her hand on his shoulder. "We'll get through this."
