Part 7!

The effects of ninpo overuse are beginning to take their toll

So...this whole part wasn't in my plans at all when I was going to draw, but then the characters started talking on their own and I just sat there and traumatized myself.

I still have one more already finished part left, but I'll save that for later.

Hi! Uh, this might be an odd question, but any tips on outlining?

First up, get a blank document. Dump ALL ideas that make you excited to write, regardless of the order. Sometimes, if there's no actual order you can tell, I actually put these on sticky notes so I can play with easily moving them around. A couple of these ideas will be sacrificed usually, but it never hurts to have them jotted down in case you figure out the perfect spot for them later.

Ignore that voice that says "oh I'll definitely remember to do these plot points. I don't need to write them down." Sometimes you need a break and you'll come back to your work and either love or hate yourself over the state of your outline.

Start broad. Three bullet points of a sentence or two for the beginning, middle, and end. Break it down into a bit more detail. Break those details down into even more detail. Key things to capture: any foreshadowing you want to plant, what is the point of each chapter / what changes in each chapter, major character arc moments.

[I usually do beginning/middle/end -> overall huge moments -> overall arcs -> individual chapter breakdowns.]

Remember that your outline can be as flexible as you need or want it to be. Do not let it trap you into a boring story; if you have a better idea later, redo the outline from that point forwards. It's okay!!

If you get stuck, use your outline and look at the end for where you are trying to land. Try outlining backwards from there.

Bonus: after finishing a chapter I open my outline and "summarize it" in more depth to capture anything that changed so I have a quick reference of my story so far.
