My main account is cursed
I’m completely convinced that my main account is just cursed. I unlocked comp on one of my alts and decided to use it to only play brig (a character I never play) and it’s 1 away from my main’s rank. So either 1. Brig is broken 2. Brig is just my soul character and I should never play anything else or 3. My main is cursed. I get games that are so painfully winnable if my teammates could just grow an extra brain cell to rub against their one other one.
Anyway I don’t care about my main account’s rank anymore so I’m gonna throw it on stream this weekend. Mercy only challenge bc it doesn’t matter what I play or how much work I put into a match either way. If I get tilted I’m logging onto my alt and playing Brig. Maybe hopping on Rivals if my duo asks nicely :p

My opinion on Overwatch’s S14 Norse mythology content as a Norse pagan
Pt.3 bc tumblr mobile is stupid and I’m not sending all these pics to my computer.
Pt.1 Pt.2
(Mostly screenshots from my tiktok post on the same subject, but going into more detail)
This is a yap fest and I’m by no means an expert, but I have been practicing for almost a decade and could tell you all the myths and half the sagas by memory if you asked. Links to sources that have helped me on my journey and that I think are just cool are in pt.1.
I know tumblr likes to mess up image quality which might make it hard to read, so all text is in the image description, unless it was a yap fest and I need more room to write, in which case it will be at the bottom of my comments for that image.

Norse mythology also has trolls, so I’m ok with this, even if it was meant as a jab towards Jotun.

I like glowy shit, ok? This is how you make horns on a helmet look cool enough to make up for the historical inaccuracy. If I started playing Doomfist this is the skin I would wear.
Text in the image reads: Norse Doomfist skin. 7/10. Basic and a recolor. Better than the original imo.

Had to include both sides of this one. It looks pretty cool, I’ll give it that, but the Jotun rant is already in pt.1.

In hindsight I would give this a higher rating. It’s kinda like his basic skin, but isn’t a recolor and I really like the detail.
Text in the image reads: Fenrir reaper skin. 7/10. The ears have jiggle physics. Chain markings on his wrists calling back to the binding of Fenrir. Kinda basic but cool too. Art on the back is nice.

So, I play sombra, if you couldn’t tell. I also noticed from playing with this skin on that the blue they chose for all this stuff is the same blue on the health kits. So explaining why a female character fits Loki is a little complex. His default pronouns would be he/him, but when he shape shifts into a female, as he does often, he is referred to as she/her. This is unique to him, as when Thor is dressed up as a Freya, he is still referred to as he/him. He also practices magic very often, which was seen as a feminine activity at the time. Interpret that as you will. Ocean Keltoi has a good video that goes into more depth on Loki.
Text in image reads: yap warning! Loki Sombra skin. 10/10. Sombra’s smirk is perfect for Loki vibes. Runes on her gun spell Loki. The mask. Snake on her shoulder. The fact that they chose a female character is actually very nice and portrays Loki well. Even tho there’s a male character I think would’ve also worked well and doesn’t get nice skins often (Junkrat). There’s no written account stating Loki’s hair color but he’s also a shapeshifter and I like how the ginger looks. TLDR: I’m in love.
Yap over, let’s continue.

I didn’t know this was a recolor when posted this on tiktok, but it’s been pointed out to me.

In hindsight I would give this a lower rating. It’s just a recolor, no matter how good it is. The suzu is an apple and one Ofunda a tree because Idunn is the keeper of the apples of immortality and the trees that grow them. The other Ofunda references the myth where Idunn and her immortality apples were stolen by a Jotun who could shape shift into an eagle and returned by Loki, who borrowed Freya’s cloak which turns the wearer into a hawk.
Text in image reads: Idunn kiriko skin. 10/10. The suzu made to look like an apple. A recolor but I could tell who it was at a glance. Ofunda depicts a myth. Nice of them to include a lesser known goddess.

I don’t expect perfection, this is very good, especially with a team of people working on this stuff and not just one autistic fucker like me. Like I said, I’m not an expert, that title goes to people like Jackson Crawford, but I like to think I have my stuff down pretty good. I’m just your average reconstructionist heathen and overwatch enjoyer. I love sharing my knowledge, so if you have any questions, I’ll be happy to answer.
Ok but imagine Skadi JQ and Loki Junkrat with special vls referencing the story where he tied a goat’s beard to his balls to make her laugh.
Text in image: In conclusion: very nice 👍. Not many recolors. Wish they didn’t fall into the blue skinned ice giant Jotun trend. I wouldn’t have been mad if they gave Kiri and Sombra’s skins to characters that don’t get skins as often. So many named Jotuns in the myths they could’ve slapped names on Mauga and JQ instead of just calling them Jotun. Brig should’ve gotten a Freya skin with another cat emote.

My opinion on Overwatch’s S14 Norse mythology content as a Norse pagan
Pt.2 bc tumblr mobile is stupid and I’m not sending all these pics to my computer.
Pt.1 Pt.3
(Mostly screenshots from my tiktok post on the same subject, but going into more detail)

I posted the Jotun rant in pt.1.

If you don’t already know, home on helmets aren’t just historically inaccurate, but stupidly impractical and would never have happened. Most people know this by now, but ig not whoever designed this.

I also don’t like that they have him a blocky hammer. He has plenty of differently shaped hammers in his other skins. In the myths, Thor is described as being ginger.

I really don’t have much else to say. 9 layers for 9 worlds, but I don’t see anything else to point out. I should’ve pointed out the valknut on the tree, but I got lazy on this one.

It’s the same shape as the one I wear. I’d prefer ᚦ or ᛗ but ᛟ is fine ig. There’s an interesting history behind people carrying small mjolnir charms like this. It only goes back to early christianization of the region, but it does have historical evidence. Most believe it was a response to christians wearing the cross either as an act of defiance, or just them saying “yknow what, that is a good idea.” There are two main shapes of Mjolnir found across Scandinavia and this is one of them. (And no the other isn’t the marvel block.)

In hindsight I would give this a lower rating. The sagas describe Odin as more of a scholar than a fighter and I wish they leaned more into that. The gold armor is very much giving marvel vibes. And imagine if they made his balls ravens so he’s just throwing hugin and munin at you, that would be great. Give him something more like an old Norse traveler’s clothes, some glowy runes, some wolf imagery and he’s perfect.

In a Norse mythology themed season this is exactly what I expected. It’s not good, it’s not bad, just expected.

Referencing the slaying of Baldr where he was killed by a sprig of mistletoe, his only weakness. It’s also the Christmas season, so if you didn’t know better you’d think it was referencing the Christmas tradition involving mistletoe.

Again, not surprising for a Norse mythology season.
That’s all the images I can post here, go to part 3 for more.

My opinion on Overwatch’s S14 Norse mythology content as a Norse pagan
Pt.1 bc tumblr mobile is stupid and I’m not sending all these pics to my computer.
Pt.2 Pt.3
(Mostly screenshots from my tiktok post on the same subject, but going into more detail)
This is a yap fest and I’m by no means an expert, but I have been practicing for almost a decade and could tell you all the myths and half the sagas by memory if you asked. I’m going to put links to sources that have helped me on my journey and that I think are just cool at the bottom.

Yes I did spend money on this pack, no I don’t play 3 of the 5 characters.

It’s a cute design. Nothing that really screams Baldr to me, but it does match the skin. I just like that it’s a simple Norse inspired design. The knot doesn’t have any historical significance.

The symbol on the sail is both Celtic and a Norse and an example of how close the two cultures were, though it is more often found in Celtic sources. They shared a lot of stuff. There’s even some debate about some myths and mythological creatures on whether they were originally Norse or Celtic.

I didn’t save it. I ended up spilling the rant in the comment section and I’ll write it at the bottom of this post.

It’s close and I appreciate the effort, but it’s off just enough to make me not like it.

It’s great for a free battle pass skin, but is obviously heavily inspired by marvel’s Thor, which the rest of the skins aren’t, so I’m a little disappointed.
Text from the image: Jotun Junker Queen Skin. 3/10. Can we say “Marvel Thor’s Inspired?” Should’ve made her Skadi.

I didn’t mention in the image bc I didn’t want to write too much on the picture, but I wanted to address it here. This one does do the thing where people steal from Native American culture with the face markings. There is no evidence for Old Norse people wearing face makeup or having tattoos of lines across their faces anywhere. Painting runes? Maybe, we can’t be sure about that. War makeup would’ve been the most likely and it would’ve looked more like Kiss makeup or like Farkus from Skyrim. So the lines under LW’s eyes on this skin? Not cool blizzard. Maybe if lw was a native character, but he’s not.
Text from image: Baldr Life Weaver Skin. 10/10. He’s beautiful. They couldn’t have picked a better character to play Baldur. The runes on his chest spell Baldur. The Aegishjalmr being made of his petals is such a nice touch.

Here’s the rant:
The Jotun from the myths are not “blue skinned ice giants.” They are another clan of god. The three main clans of gods are the Æsir, the Vanir and the Jotun. The three clans traded members often in the myths and that movement of gods led to children. The children are not described with any indication that they had strange parentage. The only difference is that the Æsir are the only gods that have any shits to give about humanity and even that has exceptions for a few Jotun. Jotun are not inherently evil and Æsir are not inherently good. I’m happy to answer any further questions, but I’m gonna leave this at that for now.

Norse mythology for smart people is a website that summarizes the myths in a way that is easy to follow and is where I started learning.
The Poetic Edda in pdf format. A collection of myths and stories recorded by the Icelandic scholar Sæmund the learned.
The Prose Edda in pdf format. Another collection of myths and stories recorded by Icelandic scholar Snorri Sturlson.
Video:
Jackson Crawford is a professor and expert on all things Old Norse. He teaches the language, tells the stories and analyzes modern references on his channel.
Ocean Keltoi is a Norse pagan and historian. He explains myths, gods and goes into many philosophical topics in a way that is entertaining and informative.
Wolf the Red is a Norse pagan. His videos are more focused on the religious aspect of paganism. He has rituals, explains topics related to paganism and reads the Havamal.
Music:
Skald is a group of French musicians who play in a style I believe is as close as we can get to what the old Norse people would’ve played and sang. They play traditional Norse instruments and sing in old Norse. They usually steer clear of the style most “Norse artists” use which is just stolen from Native American traditional music. Most songs are about the myths or nature. YouTube | Spotify
Books:
The Eddas of course are nice to have a copy of, but the pdfs are free. Any translation is fine, but Jackson Crawford’s cowboy translation is hilarious.
The Way of Fire and Ice by Ryan Smith is one I have. It explains myths and practices without that pesky latent Christianity or sneaky racism that’s common in other books.
The Gospel of Loki by Joanne Harris is an entertaining retelling of the myths from the pov of Loki. Take it with a grain of salt because it’s meant for entertainment, not information, but it’s honestly pretty good. If you want to learn but need something more entertaining to hold your attention, this is the book for you. (Just don’t go around telling people you’re an expert and everything you say is correct because you read this one book.) She has a second book which isn’t based on the myths at all, so stick with this one if you’re looking to learn the myths.
I’m currently reading Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology, so I can’t vouch for it yet, but I’ve heard it’s good.
There are many resources to get your information from, but reading the Sagas and Eddas are the best imo. Steer clear from anything with racist dog whistles or that steals practices from other cultures. Unfortunately, this is a religion that racists have latched onto as a way to excuse their bigotry, but they are simply incorrect. I’m a reconstructionist pagan, which means I practice as close as possible to how old Norse people would have in their time. This is backed by research, not just into the myths, but into the culture, and it leaves no evidence or room for bigotry.
