Prolog
'We live in a safe world' That's what people try to make you believe. However, once you have went through what i am through with, you will never call this world 'safe' again. You're wondering why I'm telling you this, don't you? Well… Once i was as clueless as you and did not believe in a connection between what I saw on television as a kid and a teenager and reality. Like most people, I was sure that these worlds were completely separate. How wrong I was. At first I did't notice anything that evening. It was a perfectly ordinary evening. I sat in my room, doing my last homework in my pajamas and thinking nothing bad. Then, however, I felt the feeling of fear. It got stronger until I could barely stand it anymore ... I jumped up and tried to call for my parents when I felt a big, strong hand grabbing my left arm. Frozen with shock, I felt my heart pounding in my chest. In the last few weeks and months I had heard about these incidents again and again. Attacks carried out by beings from black fog. A few seconds - which felt like hours - went by before I finally took all my courage and turned around. I would have been surprised to see something else and yet my voice froze. Deep black fog had gathered in my room. A mute but no less panic scream escaped my throat as I struggled to break free. To this day, I don't know how, but I succeeded after a few fainting attempts. With a loud noise, the left sleeve of my top part tore and I stormed out of the room in wild panic. Trampling I rushed down the stairs, past my parents, who called after me and asked what had happened. I loved my parents. My whole life they had done everything for me and cared for me. But now in my panic, I could not remember warning them as well. My father grabbed my arm and tried to stop me. "Levi! Calm down! ", My father shouted at me in an attempt to bring me to my senses again. The warm blue of his eyes beamed with concern. I screeched and yanked in my futile effort to break free. I was thirteen years old and my father was a fifty-year-old security guard. My mother squatted in front of me and turned me to her. The panic in me, however, had not yet settled. My breath went so fast that my mother feared I would pass out, so she asked my father to call a doctor. I was neither an asthmatic nor anything else in that direction, but mother was always overprotective when it came to me. I was her only child, after all. My hectic view fell on the stairs on which the shadow threateningly built up. Father released me and I took the chance to stand at the bottom of the stairs and shout as loud as I could. "Catch me!" I roared as loud as I could, putting all conviction in my voice that rested in me in some way before I turned and stormed out of the house. The creature did't seem to notice my parents and immediately followed me. Despite the panic and fear that now dominated me, I was relieved to at least know my parents were safe. I fled and ran as fast as my body allowed. My lungs burned after a while and the full moon was the only thing that gave me some light after a while. Only a few years ago, Vienna had been a comparatively beautiful city. But in the last few years so much had changed ... Now it was more like a heap of rubble than a big metropolis and the headquarters of Austrian politics. No one knew where these mist beasts had come from. But politics brought them in contact with the so-called 'overcomers'. For wherever these beings appeared, they would be near. Out of breath, I straightened into a street and pressed my back against the wall in the hope that this beast would walk past me. In a desperate attempt to suppress any of my sounds, I put my hand over my mouth to quench my breathing. I waited a few minutes. My intention seemed to have worked. Because even after several minutes, I heard nothing more. "Is it gone?" I thought, before gathering my courage and peering around the corner. My breath caught and my heart seemed to skip a beat when I felt something behind me. I turned around with fear. The shadow had built up to full size behind me - almost as big as the buildings around me. A ghastly smile stood in his face. Panic returned to my senses. "No! That can't be! ", I thought, close to fainting. The huge claw of this beast fell on me. "I'm lost!" With that cry, I yelled out all the despair and panic that had seized me. No sooner had the last letter died away than the sound of razor-sharp metal, followed by the shrill cry of that monster, cut the cold night air. In the light of the full moon, I recognized an armor made of silvery metal. A weapon belt with a large sapphire on the buckle held the scabbard of the sword, which was led by the knight, who now landed before me with unimaginable ease and elegance. My legs, which were already shaky, now completely failed and I slumped to the ground like a fallen sack of potatoes. I almost wished to become unconscious, but my consciousness remained clear. "A knight?" I whispered stunned. A woman with ebony hair and emerald eyes stood in front of me. Ignoring me, she turned and stormed the beast one more time. I didn't get much of this fight. Too much of my thoughts circled around what happened before my eyes. Was she an overcomer? If she was one, why was she fighting what most people blamed her for? I thought about this. What if the overcomers were not the reason for these nebula monsters, but our protection against them? With an elegant jump she pushed off the ground and for a brief moment I was sure to recognize the silhouette of a pair of white wings on her. A high, bloodcurdling scream sounded as the mist creature dissolved. Golden light enveloped the beast and dragged it into the ground, where it disappeared after a few seconds. The knight's voice was steady as her murmur ended in an 'Amen'. I gasped, still frightened, before taking my courage. "Who are you?" I asked hesitantly. With a look less reminiscent of a young woman than a warrior, she turned to me. The armor began to fade like a shadow in the midday sun, revealing her 'ordinary' clothrs. A simple black pants and a crimson turtleneck sweater. "My name is Bakura," she replied calmly, but with an unquenchable severity in her voice. "Why did you run away?" A tired, almost desperate laugh escaped me. "Guess why," I replied. "I was scared." I leaned against my right knee as I tried to get up. I had to admit, however, that my legs were not ready to resume their service. "Of what? Pull your sword and fight, "she reminded me. Anger burned in my chest as I barked at her. "Where would someone like me get a sword?" Her eyes widened in surprise. Apparently she had realized that she had no warrior in front of her, but a ordinary child. That's exactly what I meant! And even if I had been able to lead a sword, I would not be able to use it at the crucial moment. Contrary to my expectation, however, a gentle smile fell on her lips. "If you want, I can show you." Surprise showed in my face. "I know what humanity thinks from the overcomers, the warriors of the light. But I assure you, none of these rumors are correct. We are servants of the eternal, living God, and we fight against demons like this nebula that has persecuted you, "Bakura continued, before she turned away from me. "But that's up to you." I jumped slightly as I realized that she was about to leave me alone. Fear returned to my heart. "Wait! Where are you going? "Bakura did not turn around, but moved further and further away from me. "As I already told you, it's up to you whether you follow me or not. I can not force you. " At first I hesitated. Was it wise to follow this woman? She may have saved me, but was it wise to trust her? I gathered all my remaining strength and braced myself to follow her, not knowing where she would lead me ...
