There's been a murder on the playstore!
The victim... hardly identifiable.
Evidence suggest the body's been chopped up, stripped of its insides and sloppily sewn together like a hollow puppet.
An investigation has been opened but this weird cop with an odd sense of fashion assures he has been told the truth, capitalism killed him.
The case is currently reffered to as APP. A poopy port.

How Harry and Kim might have mended some of Evrart's major mistakes.
I haven't seen anyone bring up this point when talking about one of the most morally ambiguous choices you're given throughout the course of the game. I want to explain my reasoning for why I think Evrart was not only in the wrong but disingenous in his execution (and partly so in his objectives too.)
It's undeniably true the only reason Evrart is sending Harry running all those errands is simply to establish dominance. He could send someone else easily and he has no need to make Harry prove himself when he already has eyes everywhere. In regards to the lost weapon, it strikes me as extremely reckless how Evrart handles it. He purposefully wastes time knowing damn well where's the gun, yet won't schedule a meeting until you're done, leaving a possibly loaded fire-arm to an unstable woman suffering with dementia. (And an armed cop with her, alone, who could've killed her in the stand-off to recover the gun.)
The quest with the envelope, to me, is the biggest telling sign of how disconnected he has become from the working class of Martinaise now that he holds so much social capital. Despite his fairly well-meaning mindset of 'means to an end' and working for some greater good, he's still sending a non-local cop to manipulate people into resigning the last bit of their self-determination. The coast is empty, there's tons of places to renovate and build upon and he choses the most inconvenient one likely to make the little population left resign their autonomy faster with his motive might be fear of political dissidence or simply wanting more control. I'm not saying Evrart is the spawn of the devil or a mastermind completely self-serving prick. Don't get me wrong, he IS a slimy motherfucker, but I trust he has his heart in the right place. I really do think he has tons of redeeming qualities and understandable perspectives. However, and here's my point, Harry and Kim do more for the fishing village in three days than the youth center would do in a lifetime.
Why?
Aside from how we notice the youth center would kick out and essentially erase the fishing village, there's something else that rubbed me off the wrong way. The fact that it was sold as a necessary evil but is actually hardly necessary.
First I must bring up the anodic dance music group, their project repurposing the abandoned church. Evrart is tired of seing the kids suffer in Martinaise's poverty (an argument in favor of the youth center) yet, in this case, is fine with sending some random kids into manufacturing and selling drugs because it benefits the Union. He should be more mindful of his position and acknowledge how the responsability of enacting change lies within the community too. He isn't the only one who can spark this change and he doesn't know better than everyone else. Hell, he almost irreversibly fucked up a bunch of kids prospects because of his tunnel vision.
You have two detectives, in the span of a few days, encourage these teens, remove them off a dangerous path, get them to a safe place where they can have harmless fun and aid them in their artistic ambitions. On top of it, the discovery of the 2mm hole they become witnesses and collaborators of, setting them up for a place in history. Can we even fathom how drastically life-changing that info is going to be for entroponetics in Disco Elysium's world? How a church has contained such an anomaly for three centuries and something as seemingly as unrelated as a nightclub may be able to stabilize, a smale scale fucking PALE? (If we trust Harry's small bits of intuition, which I do with what we know about it )
You just got a new artistic and recreational environment for the youth and at the same time an astounding scientific anomaly that has surely the potential not only to build a renewed science and technological hub around it (Feld is back kinda!) but might attract tourists and investors that will be benefitial to their economic conditions (if the workers have Martinaise and not Wild Pines). (Not mentioning the Phasmid which will also contribute to further public attention).
The good news about this is that the workers might actually realistically achieve Martinaise and the Harbour. They'll essentially own the land, they can have the means of production and start enough lucrative endevours and deals to be not solely self-sustaining but thriving and stronger to any finantial siege without needing to rely on organized crime. They can have the money and the public's favor to defend themselves too since Martinaise is now a land with promising historical landmarks and an endangered species, not some forgetable shithole as it was seen before.
The Coalition was hell-bent in making Martinaise a monument, an example. Yet their incompetence managing this place, overextension and failing to recognize it's potential might as well be the destabilizing blow to their all-knowing moderate guys reputation. (Being really hopeful here I know.)
Their biggest fear, change, fast, inevitable, the world spinning and growing far out their reach.
Would this lead to an immediate war? I'm not sure. Eventually maybe. But perhaps not of the same catastrophic proportions we are warned about? Maybe the future has changed somehow. I don't know if they are willing to sacrifice their false peace to destroy Revachol now bearing a baby pale of unknown dimensions with a night club that's conceiving the new trending genre of music intrinsecally connected to it all. Plus it is a Dolorian church. They destroyed the ither seven. This is the last one.
The fact is. Evrart had options. Evrart could've given finantial support to the nightclub idea if he wanted a place for the youth. Renovated some old buildings like... attempting to rejuvenize the doomed commercial area? Re-open the gym?
There's so many things to do in my head it's baffling how I was being sold the only option was to cede the fishing village and it's inhabitants.
(Apologies for any mistakes, I'm a spanish speaker. If anything is unclear just say so. Also if I have made misinterpretations, been too naively hopeful and such in my statement feel free to correct me.)

Me and Todd Chavez against the world
I actually do feel like the "unemployed friend on a Tuesday" meme actually helps de-stigmatize unemployment because it frequently affirms that when you don't have a job you're more likely to be getting up to some weird shit rather than just lazing around. But I also feel like the unemployed friend is frequently up to some random shit because there's a whole pile of miscellaneous life tasks that full-time employment keeps people from. The unemployed friend is helping their cousin move, or babysitting, or checking in with a neighbor with mobility issues. The unemployed friend is a walking thesis on the inflexibility of our current labor landscape and just how much work exists outside of work.

God what i wouldn't give to have the sheer stamina and work ethic of my next door neighbor. Every morning, 8am, the hammers and drills come out. he's putting up shelves. he's feeding cables through walls 6 inches from my pillow. He's putting together furniture. He's making smoothies. He's 74 years old. Does it piss me off? of course. But i have to admit that he is clearly also the superior being. I need The Substance but to turn me (anemic 20-something with the constitution of a consumptive Victorian child) into this absolute beast of a man

Regretfully, I had to leave all my books behind. I couldn’t bear to make the choice between my beloveds, so I left them all.   Give them back. Give us back our beds. Give us back our offices. And give us back our books.
Nabil S., from "It Was All Songs: A Letter From Gaza" translated from the Arabic by Sarah Aziza, published in Mizna on February 12th, 2024. You can read the entire essay here.
