The Causal Chain And Why Your Story Needs It

The most obnoxious thing my writing teacher taught me every story needed, that I absolutely loathed studying in the moment and that only later, after months of resisting and fighting realized she was right, was something called the causal chain.

Simply put, the causal chain is the linked cause-and-effect that must logically connect every event, reaction, and beat that takes place in your story to the ones before and after.

The Causal Chain is exhausting to go through. It is infuriating when someone points out that an event or a character beat comes out of nowhere, unmoored from events around it.

It is profoundly necessary to learn and include because a cause-and-effect chain is what allows readers to follow your story logically which means they can start anticipating what happens next, which is what is required for a writer to be able to build suspense and cognitively engage the audience, to surprise them, and to not infuriate them with random coincidences that hurt or help the characters in order to clumsily advance the author's goals.

By all means, write your story as you want to write it in the first draft, and don't worry about this principle too much. This is an editing tool, not a first draft tool. But one of the first things you should do when retroactively begin preparing your story to be read by others is going step by step through each event and confirming that a previous event leads to it and that subsequent events are impacted by it on the page.

Laid my father to rest today. It sucks. My heart hurts. I loved him more than life itself, painfully so. My world is forever changed. I was his baby, his little girl. Dammit. Now I have to figure out how to live without him, with this big hole in my heart. I have to figure out how to translate this consuming ache into the reminder that I loved and was loved in return. Dammit. He was flawed but he was mostly good and so generous and apparently a freaking genius and I had only a tiny concept of it. I was his baby, his little girl. I didn't see that side of him. My world is changed without him in it and I have to redefine who I am now.

Hitomi, Van and a little white dragon that might be the reincarnated Escaflowne. I like the idea that Van got a chance to show Hitomi some nicer things and sights in Fanelia than war and destruction.

We see the shadow of a dragon at the beginning of episode two gliding over the night sky. Since the one Van fought on earth didn’t seem like it could fly very good, perhaps there are different kinds living in Fanelia, earth, wind, forest, sea perhaps? The fossils we see in that energist mine a few episodes later also didn’t quite fit the clumsy physique of the beast from episode one.

Finally learning how to animate with Clip Studio. Not sure I like it, but it’s probably due to the small IPad I use.

My dad died today. I got the call while working at a high school concession stand. It was from the brother who never calls when it's bad timing. I knew. Even though he was doing really well, he just... died during a nap. He's gone.

I'm not ready, but I knew I never would be. I'm not ready and I don't want to go. But I have to.

The consolation is that I had a lot of really amazing memories with him in the last year. And now he doesn't have to worry about the fucking Russian scammers, money, retirement, arthritis, his back hurting, only having one eye, cancer, and learning to talk with a vocal implant.

But dammit I'm going to miss him.

Oh ok so it turns out ive been borrowing grief from the future ! it turns out ive been preparing to lose the things i love rather than basking in the light of them while they last. Maybe i should nt do that

If your fic is 1000 words long, you can’t tag it slow burn. It’s not slow burn. That is a matchstick. And this is my personal bias here but if those motherfuckers you’re writing experience significant forward momentum in their relationship in under 5k words, then that is just a regular old burn. Slow burn should be borderline intolerable and a mistake to start reading at 2 in the morning.
