I love tumblr. I love that tumblr is the best social media site of 2021.

Every other site has spent the last decade perfecting the art of targeted ads. I am a wallet of flesh and blood which must be stripped bare and profiled and picked apart for the maximally efficient way to squeeze profit from my presence. Every other site will fold and morph itself to a shape of my liking - like a fairy tale trickster stealing memories and taking their mold - to lull me into compliance and loosen my coin purse.

Facebook sees me searching fitness equipment and injects my timeline with athletic wear ads. Reddit profiles the subreddits I follow and eagerly promotes a new coding bootcamp or cloud service at every turn. Google overhears me lamenting over my moving to-do list on voice call and fills in my “how much to tip movers” query before I’ve gotten the third word typed out.

Tumblr never even tried.

They could have. The information is there. The basic infrastructure, presumably, exists. Tumblr can recommend me tags based on tags I follow, blogs based on blogs I follow, even posts that for one reason or another may strike my fancy. Tumblr could be - SHOULD be - funneling this framework into advertising, as the only means that free-to-use social media platforms can turn a profit in our capitalistic hellscape.

They just don’t.

Today I saw an ad for treating Hyperhidrosis - a condition, I think, in which a person sweats too much - and I saw it twice, four posts apart, and it is so incredibly benignly impersonally ineptly untargeted toward me compared to all other pinpoint-aimed advertising that I’m endeared to it. Tumblr knows NOTHING about me. 8 years, 51,000 likes, and tumblr has not learned a THING about me.

Advertisements for a mattress? Shitty mobile game ads that don’t make even the slightest pretense at being anything other than a candy crush rip-off? Choose-your-own adventure games either about Royal Espionage or Choosing The Wrong Dress For Your Date with ZERO in-between.

And then this. This here. The culmination, the crown-jewel of tumblr’s nihilistic non-compliance with the state of social media advertising. Any pretense of capitalistic exchange is abandoned at the gas station by the side of the road. This is not a company. This is not a product. This is not anything that fulfills the contract of consumer and seller. 

THIS. THIS IS WHAT TUMBLR HAS TO OFFER INSTEAD.

do you have any wlw book recommendations?

Yes I do! I'm going to start with books I have read then put others I'm aware of at the bottom. I will say make sure you properly research any beforehand just in case there are any potential trigger warnings you want to avoid but I'll try and include them in this list for you with a brief description. Also I lean heavily toward Fantasy in my genre but here you go:

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon (Standalone) This is going down as one of my favourites but I know the size of it is quite daunting to some people. It's high fantasy so you do spend a good portion of the beginning trying to get a grip on the world and the characters, there's a few different stories happening with one of the main POV's being wlw. If you like Lord of the Rings, Dragons, powerful women, huge world building and magic then definitely give it a go!

Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan (Trilogy, Complete) This one does come with some Trigger Warnings so definitely research this series instead of going in completely blind! That being said I liked how it was handled and I feel a lot of people avoid this trilogy because of those warnings but this has one of my favourite wlw couples in. Again if you're looking for a book rich in culture, magic, women, women with swords, and a central wlw couple then give it a go (But please do look into it beforehand).

A Dark and Hollow Star by Ashley Shuttleworth (Series, Ongoing) I believe currently the author has 4 books planned, the second to be released this year. There's 4 main characters in this one, one wlw relationship and one mlm, the POV crosses between them. I don't want to give too much away but this is a modern day setting fantasy with world building on top, very Fae and magic heavy. But i'll say it again, women with swords.

Crier's War by Nina Varela (Duology, Complete) This one I found people raving about online before the second part was released and I wasn't a huge fan of the first book however I fell in love with the second one. I've reread it since and enjoyed the first a lot more than I did on my first read through (Probably because I had more time with the characters). Again it has a central wlw romance and is fantasy!

We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia (Duology, Complete) There is not enough people recommending this duology online, not only is it a central wlw romance in the middle of a rebellion but it actually deals with immigration and equality.

Malice by Heather Walter (Duology, Ongoing) I am cautiously adding this one because it's not finished and I actually don't know how the story ends for these two yet but I did really enjoy it. A sleeping beauty retelling with the villain at the centre. If you want morally grey then I recommend! The second book is released this year.

Once & Future by Amy Rose Capetta and Cori McCarthy (Duology, Complete) Futuristic King Arthur retelling with a sapphic female Arthur at the centre! It also has a gay Merlin and other diverse characters including Non-Binary! wlw and mlm romance, POV switches between characters and AGAIN, women with swords! Like with Crier's War I preferred the second book but would recommend a read.

Queen of Coin and Whispers by Helen Corcoran (Standalone) Queen falls in love with her spymaster? What more do we need in life. Underrated book, don't see a lot of people talking about it but I enjoyed it.

Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust (Standalone) Cursed Princess falls in love with a demon and learns to actually embrace who she is? A nice short standalone fantasy read.

The Scapegracers by Hannah A Clarke (Series, Ongoing) Not sure how many are in this series but I enjoyed the first one. A modern day setting, there's not really a central wlw romance yet in the story but it's hinted and the friendships make up for it in the first book so I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes. I'm going to also list other books that are Sapphic though I haven't read them yet so I can't give much more information on them:

Did some fucking journalist just really ask about the "condition of the body"? What the actual fuck is wrong with people

I hesitated before posting because I am still devastated about what is going and the fact that the more time goes by the less hope I have they will find her safe and sound.

Before I say what I have to say, I just want to explain that I absolutely do not think she was kidnapped or committed suicide or anything like that because wtf. But I do feel like something is off and it's been running through my head since Wednesday and I need to say it before I get crazy.

1) If she got stuck at the bottom of the lake with the debris and such, that supposes she jumped or dived to get all the way down there. Her son said they were swimming and she didn't come back up, but if she helped him on the boat, she would have been at the surface? Even if she jumped clothed to help him because he fell, she would still have helped him up, which doesn't align with getting stuck at the bottom (if she got tangled near the surface, wouldn't they have found her by now?)

2) If she had been drowning by the boat, she most likely would have asked her son to send her the life jacket?

3) If she had in fact drowned, her body would have floated before sinking, and her son didn't mention anything about that...

Edit because I forget things: 4) Why would she swim with her clothes on if the swim session was planned? Her car is what? 130k? Trust me that she wouldn't want to ruin the leather with wet clothes. That makes no sense that she wouldn't put on a swimsuit (or at least remove her clothes if she had one underneath) beforehand.

I don't know it all feels unreal I keep refreshing Twitter hoping they say they've found her by the shore and she's safe.

Again, I am not making any assumptions, I just feel like something is missing. Some facts, some logic. Or maybe it's also my delusional brain holding on to anything that could mean she's alive.

PS: to those saying Naya wasn't Santana, fuck you. She wasn't, but Santana was Naya, and that's how all of us got to know her. So fuck you for saying people how to cope and demeaning their feelings because they don't align with yours. I haven't read anything disrespecting here, only moving messages on how Naya impacted people's lives, and I think that's amazing. The only disrespectful messages were those belittling people's reactions and making them feel guilty for feeling this way.

Snippet The Edge (Chap. 4)

Took some time but here’s the first paragraphs of chapter 4 for those of you who are interested. I hope you like it!

As her eyes adjusted to the darkness surrounding her, a familiar setting slowly started to take shape. She couldn’t remember how many times she had woken up here, with the urge to see the eyes of her companion fluttering open. Now, the combination of the arm across her midriff, heavy like a stone, and the roughness of the bedsheet against her naked body was making her suffocate, and she had to take a few deep breaths to calm herself.

Oh, how things could change.

The movements of the body laying next to her sprung her into action before she had time to reminisce any longer. She had to leave before Penelope woke up – before the rest of the school woke up – the slight chirping of the birds outside a warning that the first morning light was soon to be upon them.

The messy room was harboring the evidence of their activities, making it harder for Josie to distinguish between her clothes from the girl's. Then again, Penelope had never been one for order.

Anime is an animation style that exaggerates the size of the eyes and typically only represents the nose through its shadow.
