skam france has made a lot of mistakes. skam france has fallen foul of poor writing choices, countless wasted social media opportunities, and more PR missteps than i care to think about.

skam france has also given me characters that have helped me to make real peace with my mental illness and to accept it for what it is and to be more open about it. skam france has given me the strength and confidence to have more candid and open conversations about my sexuality, making me realise that my queerness is not something i have to hide from or keep hidden, but something i can and should embrace and shout about as much as i want to. skam france has inspired me to start writing again, something i had fallen out of love with and hadn’t even attempted for a very very long time. skam france has shown me some of the most beautiful acting masterclasses i have ever seen and has provided me with some new favourite performers whose careers i can’t wait to follow beyond this show.

more importantly than any of that, though, skam france has introduced me to some of the best friends i have ever had. i have never had online friends before joining this fandom and now i have found so many people whose friendship means so much to me i could burst into tears every time i think about it. because of skam france, i travelled abroad alone for the first time in my life to stay with a woman who has become one of the most important people in my life. because of skam france, i have made friends from all over the world, which means there’s always someone awake for me to talk to. because of skam france, i have met people with whom i can be more myself with than anyone else i have ever known, because these people are just like me. i have people who understand me, who don’t judge me, who love and accept me for everything that i am and do. i have people who support my writing and my art and music. i have people who make me laugh more than i have ever laughed in my life and who hold me up when i feel like i’m at rock bottom. 

so yeah, skam france has made a lot of mistakes. it is a million miles away from perfect and there are so many things i would have changed about the last couple of seasons, but i would never ever change the countless positive ways in which this show has influenced my life. i understand that people are disappointed and that people are angry and hurt by the show going in a direction they didn’t want, but i just can’t bring myself to focus on that negativity when there is so much love in my heart.
