Introduction
After the flight, I remembered the rain. Slowly it crept up on us, it was like the whole Earth was applauding us for becoming the last humans. Then it disappeared as the dead gave us their final congratulations. The silence did not last long, because suddenly beauty exploded out of the doom.
It was not hard to figure out where we were, even though the storms and battle tore up much of the land. In our awe we ran from the jet to touch the ground with our hands. It had been months in the sky and now we were at the most spectacular and most engrossing biome of the world. We were in the Serengeti.
Bruised animals wandered around the burnt, crusted grass. To see a giraffe, to see an animal, to see life besides the ones we were trapped with on the jet was relieving. We had hope for a new life and hope for new friends. I had so many questions as we traveled along the savanna landscape.
We “leaders” went in an Eco-friendly jeep riding, which was driven by the last adult we will ever see. His name was Tim and he didn’t like to talk to us, but despite his silence one of the three boys, Raine, became an excellent tour guide. Raine struggled a lot and that was mostly due to the effects from the disaster, that killed everyone, except a group of mysterious adults, twenty-four babies, and six 10 year-olds. Raine stopped attempting to give us tours, because he obviously was depressed.
After want seemed like the longest and shortest trip of our lives, we made it to the Atlantic ocean. The water was darker than I had remembered it, but I had no complaints, because I was ready to finally get some decent sleep.
The ship was small and yet built for sea storms. It terrified Krystal and I had a feeling her anxiety was related to her missing arm.
We saw dolphins, so many dolphins, that my sketch book filled up with them. Barbados saw the dolphins once and he cried. He didn’t talk to anyone the whole trip, except Riley. Riley became my closest friend on the boat, because she was so easy to love.
The trip was supposed to be a retreat, but with Raine gloomy, Krystal terrified, and Barbados grieving. I knew our group could not last, even with the support of Riley. It should have dawned on me, that the person I should have been scared of the most was John. The last thing I remember was him yelling,“Vera”.
