I want to take a moment and really say how much I loved MDG: The Three Musketeers. When it first came out on DVD, I was not in the least bit interested in watching it. Can’t remember if it was received poorly or not, but I don’t really care about what critics say. Point is, I wasn’t a huge Mickey fan as a kid for the fact that he was just so darn optimistic. Don’t get me wrong; that’s a great thing to be! But because he was almost, in my eyes at least, flawless, I wasn’t a fan. I liked the characters that had weaknesses, and besides being the little guy who got picked on by big bad guys, and being horrible at times at juggling friendships and his relationship with his girl, Mickey didn’t really have anything else I could enjoy about him (Do keep in mind that I was only exposed to the classic Mickey at a very early age by this point, therefore the Mickey I refer to is the one that came out of the 90s, early 2000s; the one that had to be a positive role model for children).
My mom, however, loving Mickey, Goofy and Donald, borrowed the movie and insisted that we watched it as a family, like we usually did every Sunday night for the weekly Disney movie. And I actually am proud to say that it is one of my favorite Main Cast Disney films ever.
Why? Because they put Mickey in situations where not only did his height often impair his actions, but he actually got sad. Like REALLY sad. He fell in love with a princess (btw I LOVE IT that they gave Minnie little curls of hair), the typical lowly hero thing, and okay, he got kidnapped. But at the climax, he presumed one of his best friends was killed, he was ditched by his other best friend, and then he was tossed into a jail cell that threatened to fill with water. The only way he could survive was if he was 11 feet tall, which is impossible for a 2 foot mouse.
Mickey is then placed in the position of being the rescuee: his only way of surviving was if the people he knew were gone or had abandoned him could set him free. His hope literally disappeared during the time he was imprisoned, and he even cried (or came close to, since we don’t see him shed any tears on screen). Disney came 95% close to actually killing their mascot when Mickey couldn’t hold his breath under water anymore and fainted.
I don’t know about most people, but I swear I had a moment where I actually begged him to be rescued… which is of course, what happened.
In the past, Mickey has been in situations where his life was threatened, sure. But over the decades they had to dial down on what happened to him and how he reacted because parents thought it was too harsh and a bad influence on their children. As they say, “The more popular you are, the less you can do.” But in this film, they not only had a happy, hopeful, determined, slightly naïve Mickey, per the norm, but they also made him sad, angry, despair, GIVE UP ALL HOPE… and nearly die. Placing him in situations where he was frustrated with his height or given up all hope gave me a whole new level of respect for him, because Mickey had finally become a character I could really enjoy. Maybe not on every television show or theatrical short, but at least in some instances.
Scrooge McDuck still stands by far as my favorite Disney character due to his incredibly realistic personality and flaws, but Mickey comes in close to 2nd thanks to The Three Musketeers.

I think we need to start looking at people and ourselves the way we look at bread
Got stretch marks? Lovely
You chubby? Beautiful
Are you skinny? Also beautiful
Your body has a unique shape or size? Bread comes in all sizes and shapes too, and they’re all fucking beautiful.
You’re dark-skinned? Gorgeous
You’re tan? Still gorgeous
You’re pale? Also gorgeous
You have acne or other skin blemishes? Stunning
Got scars? Still lovely.
Is your face or body asymmetrical? Doesn’t matter, you’re still beautiful.
Are you high-maintenance? So is sourdough bread, and there’s an entire community of people in love with it!
If bread can look all these different ways and still be beautiful, so can people! Give yourself and the people around you more love! You are worthy and gorgeous as you are!
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
