Oh boy. a project like this was gonna take a long time already because of the scope and sheer number of people, but add in a bunch of technicalities + extra work in the end + the few extra pages i had to draw + finals week and... yeah. 8 months later. its funny bc this was supposed to be to celebrate hitting 25k, and im at 27.7k now 😭

BUT IT'S FINISHED! i'm so proud and so in awe of all the talent that exists in this fandom. i have definitely learned a lot from managing a project like this. I would love to do it again in the future (but maybe on a smaller scale, LOL).

special shoutout to @buf309 for all that legwork you put in the end with SIX PAGES, that also managed to bring the story together. I honestly did not know how the heck you would bring it all together, but you knocked it out of the park.

I don't have much to say about this chapter, but just look at Damian's face here! I wouldn't be surprised if this leads to him either asking Anya to visit his home or demanding that he let him visit her home in a fit of jealousy! I suppose his friends might try to rein him in if he tries to do either of those things, but Becky may try to help him out.

I'm going to laugh if Anya ends up bringing all her old and new friends home with her without giving her parents a heads up, especially if Twilight ends up missing it due to work...

I had a couple of nasty thoughts after reading this chapter that I really hope I'm wrong about.

Firstly, if we assume that Anya's bio mom could also read minds, what if the way they tried to give Donavan that power was by taking part of the bio mom's brain and implanting it in Donavan and she died as a result of the surgery? Something like this may explain why Donavan is the only one with visible scars out of the three of them. Admittedly, I don't think this sort of attempt to transfer the power necessarily makes sense, so I think my odds of this theory being right are low

Secondly, if it turns out that Anya got her mind reading powers from her bio mom and that Donavan was also experimented on, what if Donavan only had Damian to see if he would get powers regardless of if the initial experiment on Donavan was successful? Again, I don't think this theory is super likely

Given that Anya's bio mom might also have mind reading powers, I can't help but wonder if they're both the result of a selective breeding experiment that was trying to make humans with a particular trait and that mind reading wasn't necessarily what they were going for initially...

I have come up with a ridiculous and likely implausible explanation for why Donavan hasn't done anything about Twilight yet, even if we assume that Donavan can really read minds:

Donavan believes that Loid is Daybreak!

...or some other Ostanian spy with either official or unofficial ties to the Ostanian government's current ruling party (I think it's funnier if Donavan assumes he's Daybreak...)

You see, while Twilight does think about being a spy during his first meeting with Donavan, he DOESN'T think about being from Westalis or any other country. For all Donavan knows, Loid could have been sent to try and get closer to Donavan by someone in the current ruling party. The current ruling party doesn't appear to be interested in starting another war and would want to know about any plans to do so, so they can stop them. The current Ostanian government isn't what you'd call a paragon of virtue, so I wouldn't rule out them using their own spies to try and keep an eye on former officials and potential political rivals.

Reporting an Ostanian spy to the SSS likely wouldn't go too far and would likely just result in the government sending a different, and potentially less interesting, spy after Donavan. Thus, Donavan has decided that it isn't worth doing anything about Daybreak Twilight just yet.

I'll admit that I'm still not fully convinced that he can actually read minds, but I'm looking forward to the story exploring this possibility. I think it will make an interesting contrast with how the narrative handles Anya's mind reading now that she's told Damian about it.

The main reason I'm not convinced he can minds is because Twilight literally thought, "I am a spy," during his meeting with Donavan, and nothing happened to him.

This does make me wonder if either Demetrius or Melinda has told Damian that they think Donavan can read minds, although given that he doesn't seem to be particularly close to his mom and brother I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't confided in him.

I'm inclined to think that this happened after Damian's birth because Demetrius has some warm memories with Donavan.

I know this may be a bit of a reach, but I think that it is possible that Donavan, just like some fans of the series, might suspect that Damian isn't his son. If I'm right about that, I think this suspicion could be what led to him distancing himself from the rest of his family. The reason why he isn't treating Damian worse than he is due to him realizing that Damian is an innocent party in all this. I think the reason why he hasn't gone public with this is due to him wanting to avoid a scandal that could hurt this political career.

To reach a bit further, I think the person who Donavan suspects of being Melinda's affair partner may be a relative of his that we haven't heard of yet due to how he went off about not being able to trust people you share blood with. I personally wouldn't rule out the possibility that Jeeves is somehow related to Donavan...

Then again, maybe I've just spent too much time reading dramatic tales of dubious veracity on the best of reddit updates sub for my own good...

Edit: I'd also like to point out that while they didn't have DNA tests in the 60s, they did have HLA testing that could be used to determine paternity with an 80% success rate, but it wasn't able to distinguish between close relatives. This is something that I initially came across while doing research for a Spy x Family time travel fic idea I have that I'm unlikely to ever write or post...

If it turns out the reason why Melinda is afraid of Donovan is because he's either abusing or black mailing her, then I think there's at least a small chance of Twilight's mommy friends plan backfiring on him in a way that he doesn't expect.

The mommy friends plan is supposed to go something like:

Yor befriends Melinda > Melinda invites the Forgers to her home (or she helps Anya get closer to Damien and he invites them) > Loid befriends Donovan

NOT

Yor befriends Melinda > Melinda tells Yor how awful Donovan > Yor murders Donovan

While I'm sure there's a reason why they haven't taken him out yet, Garden doesn't exactly like Donovan, so I wouldn't rule out them letting Yor do it as a treat

Without getting into an actual analysis of the tarot spread, I will say that I think the fact that the star is reversed implies that Anya getting Tonitrius Bolts is bringing her closer Damien. One could say that the opposite of a Stella is a Tonitrius Bolt after all. I've seen fan theories along those lines before this chapter came out, at least, and I think you guys are on to something

I'm just amused by the fact that Loid and Yor have the exact same hobbies - they both have NO hobbies!

I'll likely have more to say later. I'm probably going to give that tarot spread the Biddy Tarot treatment, but I'm on the fence about posting my results as I'm not the best at reading tarot cards and I imagine someone who is more into the tarot than I am will post their results sooner as opposed to later...

Don't mind me, I'm just thinking about how Nightfall arguably has just as much, if not more, character development than the main love interests in some other shonen series (particularly the older series, but this obviously doesn't appy to all shonen series out there). In case it isn't clear, I personally don't consider Nightfall to be a true love interest for Twilight as her crush is decidedly one-sided and acknowledge that making these comparisons may not be all that fair.

While her characterization currently centers around her crush on Twilight, the series isn't rewarding Nightfall for acting this way as it is often played off as a joke and has led to her acting recklessly. I can't help but think that she might be using this crush to cope with something that we just don't know about yet. I'll admit that I do think she's underdeveloped in comparison to many of the other women in the series, but I believe that Endo will flesh her out more when the time is right.

She also gets to do cooler stuff than a lot of other romantic leads. In the tennis arc, she got to fight alongside him as more or less his equal. Also, she isn't getting sidelined during major fights - in the mole arc, she actually got to beat Wheeler after Wheeler beat Twilight. It's not every day that you get to see a shonen protagonist's female love interest beat someone that they failed to beat themselves.

We're also slowly starting to see her develop relationships with other characters besides Twilight, notably Franky and Handler. Love interests often aren't shown having any sort of relationships beyond what they have with the protagonist. That being said, I do think she might end up with Franky in the end, but for now, she doesn't view him as a romantic interest.

Under very different circumstances, particularly if Yor wasn't around and if Twilight actually showed a hint of romantic interest in Nightfall, I might actually be rooting for her to get with Twilight.

It's pretty easy to imagine how things would have played out if Yor was sober and Loid was trying to get rid of Anya for real, IMO

This chapter was pretty great, and I may or may not have more to say about it later, but for now, can I just say that I've been wanting Anya to see Yor and Melinda interacting for a while now? I want to know what Melinda is actually thinking about when she's socializing with Yor!

Between Loid not fully trusting Melinda to the point that he thinks that he might need to protect Yor from her, some of the looks that Melinda gave Yor during the Volleyball arc, and that panel of Melinda from the end of the Bus Hijacking arc - I've been dying to have Anya read Melinda's mind while Yor is around.

I'm also hoping to see Melinda interact with Damien again while Anya is around just to see if her thoughts are anywhere near as bad as they were earlier...

Yeesh - that was awkward. It kind of makes me wonder how the family dinners go for some of the other Eden kids, particularly those that usually stay at the dorms. I'm not going to get into it here, but I have read that sending a kid to boarding school can have quite the psychological impact on them.

Also, I'm not sure if Melinda ate anything at all during this meal or if she only ate a little bit. The food does change in front of her between courses, but we never see her take a bite, and we never see her plate empty. I'm not sure if that happened just because of how tense everything was, or if she didn't trust the food for one reason or another - not necessarily poison, but it's possible that she simply didn't like the food or that the food violated a dietary restriction of hers. That being said, I think it's more likely that she just didn't have an appetite and that she spent the dinner drinking in an attempt to calm herself.
